I love this movie so much! I think Totoro and the cat bus were designed to be both cute and scary at the same time, in which case they got it absolutely spot on! 😄
Lmao it’s interesting to see adults react to this and see how most of us were raised to fear anything! Understandable because most places are not safe for kids. I wish the world is safe for kids so they can explore their fears, sadness the way the kids in this movie can. Oh well…
Laputa or PrIncess Mononoke would be a good pick… anyway watch all of them! They are really great! Learn about the Japanese culture… it helps you understand better
If you want ghibli movies with similar vibes to this I recommend, Kiki's delivery service, Arrietty and Ponyo. Howl's moving castle is also great tho more straight up fantasy and with romance, and Spirited Away has more creepy imaginery but its also very sweet. Make sure to check the genre of the movie before digging in because some ghibli movies will emotionaly wreck you XD
I will ask the Film Theorists to get information on the meaning or possible meaning of the film. Some of Hayao Miyazaki films are found to be political, but all have been well done. It's so shocking to me that this is only your second Ghibli film! They're all great, but I don't find any of them particularly outstanding. If I had to pick a fav, however, it would have to be Mononoke Hime. Here are two completely unsollicited and unrelated anime movie recommendations: - あらしのよるに Arashi no Yoru ni (2005), which is actually here on TH-cam in its entirety with English caption subs that are quite accurate. th-cam.com/video/mNmpQbw-G7g/w-d-xo.html - 聲の形 A Silent Voice (2016). If you haven't watched this one, you've definitely heard or read about it. Very beautiful, very sad. You'd love (and hate) both of them.
I hope that next time you watch a Ghibli movie don't watch it in the dubbed version. Most of the emotions and the character are lost in the way they dubbed it in english.
