I, personaly, like Jigo. He is ambitious without pride, manipulative without maliciousnes. He can make ends meet, but also can take a loss in good humor.
In different narrative he will be a protagonist.

Moro's Japanese voice acting is excellent. Perhaps due to the difficulty of reproducing it in dubbing, the voice is processed to express it.

Eboshi isn't evil at all I'd say, she is doing what's best for her people and trying to protect them and give them a good life. Yes her methods aren't the best but she doesnt have many other options really. Also she couldn't go back to help Iron town. Or well she could but Jigo wouldn't have gone back with her. So all she would have to help is her and her bodyguard.
One of my favorite movies. I watched it when I was about 10 and it's stayed with me and has remained important to me 15 years later! I loved hearing your thoughts it's always fun seeing someone watch this masterpiece for the first time.
One thing I so love about this movie is that it's so nuanced. There isn't truly a villain. Yes, Jigo and Lady Eboshi are definitely the antagonists however I wouldn't say either are particularly 'evil'. Like you said, definitely misguided, but there's so much going on with both of their motivations that, once you really dig deep into it, you can understand. If anyone was really the 'villain' it was Lord Asano, who isn't even in the movie, but has such a huge impact on the stories events simply because of how high in power he is.
And as heroic as Ashitaka is, the movie also does a great job putting his neutralist ideals into light and criticizes them in a way where you can see where his choices were not always the best choices. Just a beautiful movie all around.
"To look with eyes unclouded by hate" remains one of my top movie quotes of all time. Such a powerful line and it's one that puts the entire movie into perspective.
Yes this is definitely one of my favorites now! Up there with The Iron Giant and Price of Egypt for me!
And I love your perspective. I was trying to figure out who the real antagonist in the story was, since I agreed with you that everyone we met was mostly just misguided, not evil. It didn't occur to me that the real bad guy was Lord Asano since we never met him, but I think you're right!
Human civilization only came to far through industrializing, like it or not but we need to iron towns. Without the forests cleared away and the iron towns built, you won't have the screens in front of you.
True! Although I will say I am positive we could have accomplished the same with methods that are much less destructive to the environment!

I love the incredible nuance of this film.
We cannot undo what has been done, we can’t turn back time and reverse human discovery and deeds. But we can learn from our ancestors, we can choose how we live moving forward. I believe the philosophy of the film is anti-war, anti-hate. It promotors a pastoral care towards nature, and encourages learning about the perspectives of all people we meet.
The subtext of this film is next level
You were asking why Lady Eboshi and Jiko wanted the head in particular so much. Jiko wanted the forest spirit's head so that he could sell it to the emperor, who believes it grants immortality

It's great to see someone who reacting to this masterpiece. :) But I really recommend re-watch it in japanese language with english subs, in my personal opinion anime sounds weird in different languages than japanese, because japanese people showing emotions differently than western people, so in english it sounds completely different than original. And if you like anime about such topics, I really recommend "Origin: Spirits of the Past", great anime with amazing opening and ending songs by incredible japanese artist Kokia. :)

There is a bit of a problem translating this movie from Japanese to English. While there are different terms for supernatural beings, many fall under the larger term of 'Kami'.
A polytheistic and animistic religion, Shinto revolves around supernatural entities called the kami (神). The kami are believed to inhabit all things, including forces of nature and prominent landscape locations.
Some Kami are revered as gods, while others can be a spirit inhabiting a rock. Without knowing the background, it's easier to understand if you translate them into gods, spirits, demons and so on. but not knowing that can make it hard to understand some stories like this movie. Especially as sometimes these Kami don't stay the way they are. As we see in this movie, the Wolves and Boars are spirits, but can loose their spiritual site and become animals or even turn into demons. Not only that, they can be killed despite being spirits and also grow old.
That's why we in the west can get very confused by this, but that also makes it so interesting.
This is just a quick and imprecise comment as you can write entire books just trying to explaining everything.

The reason why Prince Ashitaka was banished from his hometown was because if he stayed, he would turn into a monster and the village would be wiped out. The shrine maiden plotted revenge by sending him as a weapon to the area controlled by the Imperial Family. Jigobou probably sensed this and sent Ashitaka to the Shishigami Forest to defeat the Shishigami.
（Ashitaka's clan is a multi-ethnic group from the northeastern region of Japan who were defeated by the Japanese Imperial family hundreds of years ago.）

The reason why they don't draw it is because "explanatory" depictions don't look cool.
It is possible that Ashitaka returned to his hometown with San. Polygamy was common in those days due to the high infant mortality rate.
Finally, many Japanese commentators have commented that Eboshi was San's birth mother.
The reason for this prediction is that there are many similarities between the lines of Eboshi and Moro.
Therefore, this story can also be seen as a battle between San, her foster father Moro, and her biological mother Eboshi, over the forest.
I find this movie to be an incredibly well put together film, and I also find it to be Incredibly gross propaganda with an all around bad message. It is the most mixed bag movie I have ever seen in my life.
