- First I heard Korn with bagpipes, and now AC/DC featuring Bon Scott. Yes, I heard your cries loud and clear that I shouldn't have started my AC/DC journey with a live performance of "Thunderstruck" with Brian Johnson, and so here we are. It was impossible to find a live recording with the bagpipes (the drone while it wouldn't have been played would make live performances horrendous) so I went for the studio version over the music video. I hope you all enjoy, I sure did!

Almost every reactor seems to ignore Bon Scott-era AC/DC. Thank you for featuring him! Bon is a true rock legend and of my favorite rock singers of all time. Bon's inflection, intonation, and the way he accents words is (almost) unparalleled in R&R. IMHO he is right there with Mick, albeit with a much shorter resume.

Bon Scott has so much emotion and fun in his singing style. He is honestly my favorite front man of all time, he could do it all, sing, write, and produce.
A song like this is how you make bagpipes cool ! And Bon of course was born in Scotland so I’m not surprised that he knew how to play them!! 👍🏻

Bon Scott had once been in a pipe band and encouraged the band to experiment with incorporating bagpipes into the song. Scott left the studio that day and returned with a set of bagpipes purchased at a Park Street music store at what was an extortionately high price (AU$479) at the time...
Simply putting the pipe-set together proved tricky, and it became apparent Scott had never played the instrument before, having in fact been a drummer in the aforementioned pipe band. Nonetheless, Scott taught himself to play well enough to record and perform the song (initially with the help of tape loops).

As much as I love Brian, Bon was simply the true voice of ACDC...unique to the core.
He is the guy u want to have a drink with the most... unfortunately that's what did him in 😢.
Bon was in the band for 6 years, Brian's been in the band for 44. Bon was the first voice but I think Brian is the "true" voice. Bon has 6 AC/DC albums, Brian has 15; that's 2.5 times more albums. Bon has 55 songs, Brian has 188; that's 3.4 times more songs, so Brian also has more songs per album than Bon did. 6 of the 10 most popular songs are Brian, more people know Brian more than Bon. So by all the metrics, Brian is the true voice of AC/DC.
after Bon died I wouldn't listen to AC/DC for probably 30 years. It hit me really hard.

Something that I frequently say is, "You can always tell an AC/DC song by the first note." The band is so consistent, but that is part of what makes them great!

I used to busk in King St, which is just a few blocks from where the video was shot and yeah, those lyrics you mentioned were in my repertoire as well.

Fun facts about this song: The bagpipes were rather problematic when it came to live performances that this song was rarely played live. Hence the lack of footage. Second fun fact. The boys were sitting around deciding what instrument to bring into the song. Bagpipes were suggested as Bon was once in a pipe band. They went out and bought a stupidly expensive set of bagpipes. they brought them back and discovered they needed to be assembled. Everyone turned to Bon and he said "I don't have a clue. I was a drummer"

Bon could play bag pipes and also many reed instruments. He was a talented Muso and I knew him as a kid.
In Mark Evans Autobiography, he said that it was hilarious trying to watch Bon, Mal & Angus trying to put the near 400 dollar set of pipes together. He said they were swearing a lot while he just laughed at them. He said it looked like they were trying to solve a Scottish Rubik's Cube!😅

As an American law student in London in the summer of 1976 I saw them live at the Marquee Club on July 25, 1976. They later became the house band that summer and I think I may have been one of the first Americans to see them live since this was their first time out of Australia. By the end of the concert Angus was down to his underwear and standing on top of the stage speakers. I was in Rock and Roll heaven.

I saw Bon Scott and AC/DC more than 20 times in the 1970's. The last show I saw them do, out of the blue they played this song and yes, Bon did play the bagpipes live. SO memorable.

Now at 71 years young I remember ACDC doing this fantastic live stunt in Melbourne. Australia has a vibe as you say, we give people full marks for "having a go", it's the way we are. RIP Bon.

They made it to the top. Thanks to all of ACDC for being the soundtrack to my life. We miss you Bon and Malcolm. I'm old now so maybe I'll get to see them in concert again soon....it would be worth the trip.

These guys are just pure rock and roll energy, 100%. And part of that is not taking themselves seriously. One of my favorite rock quotes of all time is these words by Angus Young: “I’m sick to death of people saying we’ve made 11 albums that sound exactly the same. In fact, we’ve made 12 albums that sound exactly the same.”
But rock and metal fans hate when a band “changes their sound” so why try to please anyone but yourselves? (Mind out of the gutter on that last line)
These guys were just regular guys and they never forgot that. Except for maybe Phil... but Gob bless him even with his ups and downs.

Malcolm was such a backbone of the AC/DC sound. His brother got the spotlight, but he really held it all together back there.

I grew up in Melbourne where this was filmed in Swanston Street and was a teenager in the 70’s when AC/DC started. I saw them so many times with the brilliant Bon Scott, who was an amazing front man and always had a naughty twinkle in his eye. I have never seen them since he died, no disrespect to Brian, but to me, I saw the best, and that will never change. How lucky we were to see them so often, and they were so tight even then. Knew they were special from the start. Bon is a legend in this country!!

Bon Scott’s voice was once in an eternity. “Ride On” “Live Wire” “Sin City” “Problem Child” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “Gone Shootin’” are all fantastic songs and great examples of Bon’s range and ability as a vocalist. Highly recommend checking them all out, and definitely the album versions, there’s something special about them.
I stand strongly by my opinion that Powerage is AC/DC's best album and by far the height of Bon Scott's vocal achievements with songs like Down Payment Blues and Gone Shootin'.

There's an AC/DC cover band here (KC/DC haha) that has a Bon Scott singer and a Brian Johnson singer. They open their set with the Bon Scott tunes, close the set with this song, and march the bag piper out as the lights go dark and it goes silent. After a 30 seconds or so the bell rings . . .

His nickname was Road Test Ronnie. If someone put some drugs in front of Bon, he would take them.

During the writing of the album, Scott came to Angus and Malcolm to say that he wanted to contribute to the album musically if possible. Angus and Malcolm had never seen him play an instrument and asked what he had in mind. His answer, "I can play the bagpipes." Scott's father was the director of the Royal Drum and Bagpipe Corps in Australia.
Almost right. Bon played drums in the bagpipe band, so he had to learn to play the pipes for the song.

Bon was incomparable, such a character. His singing was clear as a bell yet he also had a whiskeyness to his voice. He was such a huge loss, it's amazing they continued on with the band. Oh, and that line is actually "If you want to be a star of stage and "screen", look out, it's rough and mean." Love those lyrics. Feels like they are telling their rock 'n roll story.

When I was much younger (a lot younger) my band got a shot as the opening act for a touring package that included AC/DC, Ted Nugent and Aerosmith. Aerosmith were the main attraction with Ted Nugent going on before Aerosmith and AC/DC going on before Nugent and my band opening the show. This was back in 1977. While I was on tour, I got to meet the guys in AC/DC. Bon was my favorite. He knew what he was doing and was going to have a good time doing it. I still miss him to this day.

Pretty sure I was at one of those shows. For the life of me I could not tell you which one but I am pretty sure it was in the summer. I had been a part of some of Ted's shows 73-76 and got to know him - enough to be side stage for parts of the show. That was the first time I heard AC/DC. They lived awful close to my turntable for a lot of the next decade,
Bon Scott has some songs with great story telling, and had just this certain attitude and charisma to it. Songs like Big Balls, Jail Break and Dirty Deeds are just joys to listen to.

Not a big fan of covers usually, but this song is covered really well by GWAR. One of the few examples of the original and the cover both being great.

What made Bon different, yet so perfect for ACDC was his voice was an instrument in and of itself. The pipes played three notes, but the details are the subtle nuances going on with the guitars. Those nuances is what separates this band from all others, and why they're really so difficult to replicate. The granularity of the guitar work is so hard to copy.

My father was one of the police officers on duty that day in Melbourne Australia. Thanks Elizabeth for doing some Bon Scott. You should check out the live album if you want blood you've got it. Bons live vocals are something else they get stronger and stronger live.

Man I love that song and so many other early works like Live Wire, Jailbreak, Whole lot of Rosie, and the often forgotten ballot Ride On
This was filmed in February 1976, a month or so before Angus turned 21. They did play live on the truck down Swanston Street, Melbourne (they didn't announce it, they just did it!) and they also filmed a clip in the old Melbourne City Square. This was not long before they left Australia to head to England and conquer the world. Bon's song lyrics reflected life on the road for a rock band and it was only the previous year when AC/DC had the infamous punch up with the Deep Purple Road Crew at Sunbury Rock Festival when they stopped AC/DC going on to close the night after Deep Purple cut their set early. Bon was a brilliant lyricist and singer, he could be very naughty and playful with his lyrics, but that was part of the charm. I believe he is the greatest front man Australia has ever had and he left us way too soon. There are so many more songs that stand out, 'Touch too much", "Let there be rock", "Highway to hell" and many more. Some of the live Bon performances such as the 1978 Glasgow gig show how tight and powerful the band was live. Definitely worth a deep dive into!

Bon Scott was the king of narration (as well as playful innuendo) in rock music. The bulk of his lyrics sung in his catalogue of music all tell stories. They really broke the mold with Bon Scott.

I've even seen them live twice with Bon, it was awesome. My absolute favorite song by him is "Ride On" Almost nobody knows it, very calm, melodic, blues. Completely untypical for ACDC. But for a voice analysis of yours, this one fits perfect. Greetings from Germany

He just had this style, charisma and a very almost comedic(or snarkiness) way of delivering great story telling lyrics. Love AC/DC and I love Brian too but Bon Scott is the man. Great song. Such a timeless classic. Fun fact, if you were to go to a Metallica show, this song is always the last song played over the PA system before Metallica takes the stage. My youngest daughter was 18 when she got to see them live the first time (which was my 7th time). When Long Way to the Top came on, she turned around with actual tears, and said "it's finally time, it's actually happening."

Huge AC⚡️DC fan here. Been following them since the 70’s. This is my absolute favorite song of theirs. After Bon Scott died, out of respect for Bon, AC⚡️DC has never played this song in a concert.
Just wanted to say that Malcom Young was the formula of AC/DC. He never complicated his rock n roll vision. He was naughty, brash, snarky and pushed what was allowed on rock and roll airwaves. He never bragged or made a big deal of his creation. Like it or love it, his band became an institution in this genre of music 🎼. Playing three notes over and over, that was Malcolm knowing his audience and the business. No one wrote more hits in his genre than Malcolm, the whole catalog is his, kit and kaboodle. A great example, “Hells Bells” it’s a British slang saying, like “holy cow” or “get over it”, anyone could have converted it to music, but he made it. That’s his genius, it’s not complicated, just never replicated. The Burt Bacharach’s of this world don’t fall from trees aplenty. This song speaks to the rock business from someone who could tell it to you head to toe, good and bad and make it a song that makes you give a snarky grin, especially if you’re Bon Scott. I don’t pretend they are something they’re not, but they are the benchmark of gritty rock roll radio play music.

Whenever anyone complimented Angus on his guitar playing he would always say Malcolm was better and that Malcolm could do what he does but he couldn't do what Malcolm does. The whole band is so humble. Comment sections on youtube are usually a cesspit of negativity but never when acdc is the topic.

Bon was one of the greatest front men ever. He was always having a great time and it was infectious.
No one else sounds like Bon Scott. I sang in an AC/DC cover band. Man, all I can say is that Bon Scott is so much harder to do. He has a rasp and simultaneous smoothness that are so difficult to emulate. Love that man's vocals.
I've heard people say that Bon Scott sounds like oil and Brian Johnson sounds like crushed glass. I think that's pretty apt.
His voice changed tremendously after the motorcycle crash. I really liked the change.
I agree. I do AC/DC at karaoke and can do the Brian stuff almost to a T. Bon is a lot harder to replicate.
Sadly, the iconic bagpipe solo didn't really lend itself well to live performances, even when Bon was alive. Especially, after a concert at a high school when Bon put down his rig only for some crazy fans to destroy it.
According to Malcolm Young: "Bon could actually play flute, not bagpipes. So he played the melody, and then we did the drones separately and put it on and it sounded fantastic."
Bon Scott is pure rock n roll genius. I wish I had the chance to see him live. Ac/dc at their best, no doubt.

Having seen AC/DC live, with Bon Scott out front, many times all those years ago, I’m blown away by how he lives on throughout the decades on platforms that couldn’t have been imagined at the time. Kudos to you for enjoying some of the best rock and roll that has ever been.

Bon Scott, for me is the premier singer of AC/DC and I really appreciate that you are doing this episode of them in his era. It was the first time I ever had heard of AC/DC. His death was a tragedy and the result of his alcohol addiction and abuse. I always felt that he left us too soon. Yes, I am a 67 year old woman but I do miss him and the original band.
I always think of ACDC as everyone's second favorite band. Almost no one hates them, you ALWAYS know what you're getting, and it NEVER disappointed. I can't ever think of a moment when these guys would come on the radio and I DIDNT turn it up.

One of the big overlooked songs by AC/DC for me, is "Ride On." Also performed by Bon Scott, it's a slower, pulsing tune that drives into your depths, grabs a hold, and doesn't let go. It really showcases his vocal range, as well. You should REALLY check that one out. I can just imagine that adorable smile of yours just plastered on your face the whole time :D

I love how it never goes loud or uptempo even though you think it is several times. A definite favorite.
Bom absolutely loved being the lead singer for AC/DC. He was an absolute larrikan and with Angus and the rest of the band... he could really let out his inner bogan. He was a genuinely friendly guy and it comes out in his mannerisms and the way he sings.
I can't tell you how happy hearing this makes me. Giant smile listening to awesome, crazy pure rock
His clarity and annunciation is so much better than Brian’s. Also the songwriting and lyrical genius of his work set him in a class of his own. His ability to insinuate set a standard for his song writing that I miss so much in modern music, at first listen your like “Is he singing about a card game or an STD?” What the?!? He was one of a kind no doubt!!!

These guys just exuded joy every time they were on stage. Like no other band I've seen, they were always clearly having a blast.
When I did my first Ironman 70.3 race, I was getting toward the finish line and I was tired and running slow. Then in the distance, I could hear this song being played at the finish line. Suddenly, it felt like I was moving faster, and felt a surge of energy as those last three notes kept playing and getting louder as I got closer. As a Melbourne lad, those bagpipe and guitar riffs would never have been confused for anything but AC/DC. They were instantly recognisable. 😁

Btw this vid was filmed in my hometown of Melbourne on the back of a flatbed truck driving down Swanston Street. If you could see it now it’s completely unrecognizable. Yes he was. He was truly a groove master. When you bang your head and tap your feet……you can thank Malcolm for that.
That was the genuine of The Late Malcolm (R.I.P), he would write epic songs from a handful of chords eg. Let there be Rock, in the rhythm part only has four chords, G,E,A and B.

Bon Scott was so charismatic, the best period of the band for me, even if Brain has done a serious good job
it was a more polished heavier and louder sound with Brian but after a few albums was often formulaic. With Bon they had a grittier feel with more edge to their groove and clever wit.
