- We started my AC/DC journey with "Thunderstruck" and Brian Johnson's smokey vocals. Immediately, I was informed that I should have started with Bon Scott and I understand now. His charisma and stylization are so intriguing, so much so that I decided to jump into another one of his classics, "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap"!

Bon's been gone for 40 years and we've yet to hear anyone sound like him since. Really was one of a kind.
Bon was like Freddie Mercury a great entertainmenter and considered part of the family growing up.
I actually heard something similar in a John Melloncamp song. It was a backup singer. Let me see if I can remember the song. The song is “Crumblin Down” near the end. It may be Melloncamp doing it. It’s about as close as I have ever heard but it’s just one phrase.
There's been a few that have a similar vocal sound, but nobody had his ability to tell a story the way Bon could.
Bon sang on “build me up buttercup” and I love that. Like Brian singing about a Hoover.
Actually, Marc Storace is very similar to Bon. When Bon died, AC/DC asked Marc to replace him, and he said no because he wanted to make Krokus a big time band. In retrospect. I’ll bet he regrets that.

There was a cheekiness and sly humour in Bon's voice for me that raised AC/DC above an average rock n roll band.

Angus came up with the title inspired by a cartoon character he watched as a child. The character carried a business card that read: "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Holidays, Sundays, and Special Rates."

I remember in late 1979-1980 when this would come on the radio, all the construction workers on my work crew would start dancing and cutting up and singing along. That's a good memory.
I will say this over and over again. If you want to hear bons true singing/vulnerable voice, you really need to listen to night prowler or ride on. Absolutely stunning and slightly haunting vocals

Ozzy was kind of similar. My analogy is Bon Scott was the HARD ROCK VERSION of Ian Dury, which is probably who Bon was inspired by in part. Everyone needs to familiarize themselves with Ian Dury and The Blockheads.

In the last few lines when he lists his methods of dirty deeds he includes *High Voltage* & *TNT.*
These are the names of the bands first two albums - *Dirty Deeds* being the third.
Notice how he puts TNT and High Voltage at the end of the verse so that the Done Dirt Cheap part comes right after. Implying that the records (recording, studio sessions, payments, etc) have been done dirt cheap. 😊

Every time i hear Bon it takes me back. He encapsulates an Aussie spirit that i was fortumate enough to grow up being a part of. Of course none of us knew how lucky we were at the time but ill say Its definitely worth being an old bastard now to have lived in this era.

When Bon Scott died, it was a big task to get true AC/DC fans to accept Brian Johnson, understandably. Remember when Ozzy got fired from Sabbath and hard core Sabbath fans dissed the great Ronnie James Dio? Well now AC/DC fans love Bon & Brian, and Sabbath fans dig Ozzy and Dio.
Those were simple times, when rock band lead singer controversy was the big chatter.
They used to call it a revenge tragedy. Very popular form of entertainment back in the day.
Mack the Knife is such a cool song. The lyrics tend to take people by surprise the first time they really listen to them.

Some may call it an odd coincidence, others may refer to it as prophetic, but it was actually Bon that recommended Brian as his replacement.
During some gigs in England (1973-74) Bon, with a band called Fang, opened up for Brian's band Geordie. After joining AC/DC, Bon mentioned to Angus and Malcom that if they ever needed to replace him Brian should be that guy.
Long Live Bon Scott! Dude was truly original and Rock & Roll as anyone ever could be!
Also, Bon Scott's scream going into the solo is in my opinion a classic moment in recorded rock history. Absolutely epic!

Those Angus guitar solos from the 70's are spectacular! (Bad Boy Boogie, Whole lotta Rosie, Ride on, Dirty Deeds, any of Powerage, etc.) one better than the other... The communion between Bon's voice and Angus's solos is totally true.

One fun fact, the lines: "Concrete shoes, cyanide, TNT..." and "Neckties, contracts, High Voltage!" near the end actually reference some previous songs. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was the band's second album. On the first album were the title track, High Voltage, and the band's biggest hit prior to Dirty Deeds, TNT. TNT would definitely be a fun one for Elizabeth to review.
Actually it was their their third album. “High Voltage” and “TNT” were the first two albums. They were compiled as “High Voltage” for foreign markets. The AU editions have recently been reissued in their complete form.

The great thing about this song, and a reason why you should not feel bad for enjoying it, is the sheer sense of fun in it. Bon was a master at taking pretty dark themes and presenting them with a delightful sense of ironic humor...He's having so much fun with it...Case in point, yelling "high voltage!" as if he's being electrocuted is absolute comedic genius. He was one of a kind.

Every person has at some point fantasized about hurting some deserving person for one reason or another. It is a cathartic release to throw off all moral shackles and do unto others who deserve to be done to. That is what the song speaks to. All humans feel that need to punish the guilty/deserving. It is our conscience that holds us back.
ACDC is notorious for doing songs that people misunderstand. When I was a kid growing up in the late 70’s, my sister, who was 8 years older than me and my hero, had this album, and listened to it all the time, which started me on my lifelong love of AC/DC.

I was waiting for her reaction at 11:18!!!! I've listened to AC-DC for 45 years and I love hearing what a professional thinks while having a ton of fun. I learn things (the commonality between Angus's guitar solo and Bon's voice). Her observation that the band writes songs that encourage participation is quite astute. . . . Can she do a video for every AC-DC song?
Early AC/DC is all about groove, and Bon serves it magnificently with vocals that sound powerful, twisted, sleazy and happy-go-lucky all at the same time. Guess no one will ever know how he did it, but he did and it's there to be enjoyed.
What a musical journey Elizabeth has gone on from where she started on this channel. I've learned a crapton about voice watching, and she's gone all heavy metal n stuff. Glorious.
If you ever want to understand “old school Australian vibes”, AC/DC, The Angels and Cold Chisel are great places to start. They sound like what stale beer and cigarettes smell like and we love them for it…it sounds and smells like home

Studio version of "Ride On" by AC/DC - one of the cleanest examples of both his vocals and their lead guitarist. Truly a masterpiece and VERY underrated.
Ride on is one of my examples of why the OLD AC/DC is so much better..... Squealer is great also.
I never thought of it in the terms you use. But the uniqueness of his voice kind of lent a whole "rebel" vibe to their songs. Snarky and full of defiant confidence, peppered with well placed aggression, and topped with a high, infectious energy.
Also good example of Bon is If You Want Blood (You got it)
As someone that's been playing in rock bands and singing in choirs for 45 yrs.... I really appreciate a vocal expert analyzing and appreciating rock vocals. This song is one of the many many songs I get to sing on a given Saturday night, then wake up 6 hours later and sing bass in the church choir.😛

Bon always sounded like he was singing "behind his tongue," kind of like the old cartoon character Droopy Dog. And it made his voice stand out. He had a very clear and bright delivery.
His witty lyrics and storytelling made those early records..... and Angus' guitar, of course.
This was the first LP i ever bought 40 years ago. What a difference to the ABBA records of my parents. AC/DC wired my brain for good.

I've heard this song hundreds of times, and only after this analysis the penny dropped - this song should have been in a musical, sung by the main villain!
In this musical the next number should be Sin City. The last two should be Jailbreak and Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be. I'm sure other suggestions can fill in gaps.
Does my old heart a world of good to hear Bon being given so much positive feed back from a professional from a classical genre. He was amazing, he was badass, he was rock and roll.
You will never hear a worse background vocal than on Dirty Deeds and it suits the song perfectly. After all these years still love it.

AC/DC is my favorite band. Both Bon and Brian are fantastic. There's so many songs I'd love to hear you react to. I think two of my top picks at the moment would be Night Prowler with Bon Scott on vocals. As for a Brian Johnson song, I'd love to see you react to Rock and roll ain't noise pollution! Absolutely amazing video!
The great thing with AC/DC videos showing Bon is that you can see and hear the lyrics thru his eyes.

"DIR EN GREY - The World of Mercy [eng sub] LIVE HD" is an amazing performance I think you would like. I can only describe it as performance art and the singer is one of the best frontmen ever. Such a unique band from Japan that sounds like nothing else. The singer Kyo does it all, low voice, high pitched almost female sounding, growls, screams and shrieks. Very influential band too since they've been around for a long time.
Fascinating, I've never heard this song broken down before, and there's so much going on in it ,every thing from the drums to the vocal fits together brilliantly to a great rock classic, great video thanks for sharing 👍

I was fortunate enough to see AC/DC twice before Bon Scott died, once in 78 then again in 79, I love what Brian Johnson did and they were big shoes to fill so nothing but respect to him, but AC/DC will always be Bon Scott to me, he was the epitome of a rock singer, rude, crude and socially unacceptable...R.I.P Bon Scott.

I LOVE your breakdowns of vocalization. I've been a lover of music all my life, ODDLY enough starting when my uncle introduced me to THESE guys, AC/DC. I learned a lot more about music in band and choir in school. This song came out near when I was born in the early 70s, back when people DID handle their own conflicts. I've always enjoyed the song because I heard humor, fun, and sarcasm. AC/DC fan for life. Basic, loud, ROCK!
This song is a blast at karaoke, especially when you swap in "done to sheep" randomly for one of the "done dirt cheap" repetitions.

I first saw AC/DC in 1974 at Caulfield Institute of Technology. It was in their early days. First impression was great guitar but singing a bit rough but then I became captivated by Bon Scott’s stage presence. I saw them several times live over the next few years.
The crazy thing is Bon was in a clean cut band the Valentines in the early days. So glad he found his way to AC DC

A witch's voice with heft telling a story. Pretty apt. This song is just the tip of the iceberg with Bon Scott and this band. I love the younger generations discovering this band, and learning that rock at one time used to be pretty good, and ACDC/Bon was at the apotheosis of a fantastic era of great music.
Off to see AC/DC at Wembley in July this year, looking forward to it so much
