    I’m alil surprised you guys didn’t get the theme of the movie. You need sadness to feel joy. It’s impossible to be happy all of the time. Sadness just makes you appreciate the things you have in your life. Joy wouldn’t have been able to fix Riley because Riley was faking her positivity. Which is unhealthy. Toxic Positivity is when you feel sad or depressed but act happy. You need to feel your emotions to move onto happiness

    • @m00n_y
      @m00n_y ปีที่แล้ว +87

      exactly!
      I love the exploration of Sadness not being a bad emotion in general; Sadness needs to co-exist with Joy and other emotions to make a person appreciate the good things in life as well as be able to empathize with other people.
      Only forcing yourself to be happy and repressing your sadness will lead to emotional immaturity and the inability to be vulnerable and introspective, so being able to feel more complex (mixtures of) emotions is the key to understanding yourself :)
      this movie will seriously never fail to make me cry and has such a great message!

    Sadness wasn’t being incompetent. Riley was missing her old home, and that needed to be expressed (not repressed). Sadness was “having a breakdown”, because she had a job to do, and she was not being allowed to do it. Point being - if a feeling is blocked from showing in one way… it _will_ come out in another.
    And her bedroom was not in the attic, it was just upstairs. They were in the middle of moving, they didn’t have time to shop among all the other logistics that had to be dealt with, and mattresses aren’t cheap. It would be one thing if all the furniture were permanently gone, but the moving van was due to arrive within a week, and a kid can survive camping out in a sleeping bag for a couple of nights. That’s what sleeping bags are for.
    Also- you’ve never seen this movie but you instantly recognize Bing Bong?

    I think the reason why the islands broke down so easily is because the core memories got removed. small things like Riley being jealous and mad at her friend most likely happened a thousand times but the core memory was there to stabilise it. but without the core memories, the islands are so unstable that they break only cause of one small thing

  • @hiimsky4381
    @hiimsky4381 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

    I think sadness’s breakdown and touching all the memories is what is supposed to happen naturally, but joy views it as bad because she thinks joy is a more important emotion. But Riley has had a lot of changes in her life - moving, losing friends, etc. so she’s supposed to be and allowed to be sad. So all of her past happy memories are now a bit sad because they’re in the past and won’t get to happen again. Shes not too young to be a bit depressed. She’s going through a lot.

    • @ju2545
      @ju2545 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Is that why Sadness felt the need to keep touching the memories and get out of her circle when Joy told her not to?

    • @alexelion7084
      @alexelion7084 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ju2545 Exactly, Riley needed to feel sad, because she did hurt over moving and losing everything there. But because Joy wouldn't let Sadness do her job, Riley repressed her emotions, and because she still hurt this resulted in Riley not being to feel sadness or joy and instead being moody and falling into a mild form of depression

  • @muchuchuroo
    @muchuchuroo ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Riley is trying to stay happy and positive all the time just like how Joy is trying to keep sadness away. Where in real life it's normal to feel sad, you can't have a rainbow without rain.

  • @itzmehDevi

    Technically it was Joy's fault not Sadness' that they fell into the memory lane and left headquarters
    There was a core memory and it was sad and not happy like usual.. Which is normal for a person to have important memories that are not just happy..So Joy should not have taken or tried to remove the core memory..Which leads to her stopping Sadness from doing the right thing..Storing the core memories..which eventually leads them getting beamed up

    • @Rosegirl398
      @Rosegirl398 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Exactly. She didn’t realize Sadness’ importance until her lowest point. Then when Riley was refusing to feel her emotions, Joy told Sadness that she was the only one who could stop Riley and shortly after, lets Sadness touch them and help Riley express her true feelings after everything, thus when her parents are hugging her, Sadness helps add Joy to the feelings, creating the first mixed core memory for Riley

      It was because Sadness was the only viable emotion at that point. Riley could not have felt any other emotion, which is symbolised by the console not reacting to the others. It may seem that any emotion could use the console at any point, but that's not true. They can only take over when it's possible for Riley to feel that emotion. At this point, Riley is deep into depression, which locks out all the others, but she's not so far gone that Sadness is locked out, too.

    Joy is the villain because she thinks she’s the most important emotion - like toxic positivity, we have to react to anything with joy. But it’s okay to feel mad or sad when things in life change - like moving, losing friends, heartbreak, etc. so by her controlling every thing and antagonizing sadness for just being herself is really villain moves. The moral of the story is that all of the emotions are important at different times. How we react to them is probably the bigger lesson for real kids, and that we want to have healthy coping skills so that we aren’t toxic to other people when we’re sad, scared, angry, etc.

    I realize they’re making jokes, and this is a Disney movie and it’s not that deep but I wonder if they actually think the problem is because she’s sleeping in the attic in a sleeping bag. It’s because she misses her home and her parents didn’t adequately prepare her and told her to instead push down her emotions and be happy for their dad‘s new job. She didn’t get to process. It’s not About sleeping in a sleeping bag. admittedly, it makes it worse but it’s not that, obviously.

    I get the sense that you two are missing the point: we NEED sadness. Without Sadness, how can you expect to develop empathy without understanding and relating to the pain of another person or truly understand what joy is without that contrast??? Sadness exists to help us process pain and to signal to others, "I'm struggling. Please help me!"
    Sadness was helping Riley from the beginning, by helping her deal with her grief, even if Sadness herself didn't yet understand that. Subconsciously, Sadness was the only one of the emotions who understood that Riley was grieving for her life in Minnesota and wanted to go home. That's why she could turn the yellow (joyous) memories blue (sad): because those days are over and Riley has to mourn them. Sadness was just doing her job, even if she herself didn't understand it yet.
    Sadness was the only one of the emotions who could remove the idea to run away because she would make Riley realize that running away is a bad idea; her house is sold, her friend has moved on, she'd be on her own, her parents would go crazy worrying about her.
    She was also the only one who could pull her from her depression (the malfunctioning console) because, in my own experience since I was 13, Sadness is what has pulled me out of depression after trying to stifle it. The main emotions that you feel in depression are Anger, Fear, and Disgust, not Sadness so much; you can't feel joy and you can't deal with Sadness or Joy because it hurts too much. When you finally confront Sadness after pushing it down, it hurts like nothing else but you have to rip off the bandage, you have to deal with your pain.
    Don't berate Sadness when it was really Joy's fault that she and Sadness were expelled from Headquarters; as far as Joy was concerned, "sadness" is something to be avoided and couldn't bear the idea of a sad Core Memory. Joy has bullied Sadness from the beginning because she didn't understand Sadness' purpose (neither did Sadness) until the end of the movie and saw Sadness as a killjoy while Joy reasoned that she herself was the end goal until she learned that she's not. Sadness is a normal, vital emotion; pain has to go somewhere when it's not expressed in healthy, constructive ways.

    This movie is amazing, and it's sad that some people are watching this and still lack emotional intelligence. From the very start, I already felt some kind of bond and relatedness with Sadness, while feeling uncomfortable and irritated with Joy whenever she did something towards Sadness, I hated how she kept Sadness from doing her job; it's a reference to toxic happiness. Basically gaslighting yourself to be happy all the time, when in reality, it's okay to be sad and cry about things.

      I personally felt the opposite, it just seemed so vulnerable to me. I think that’s what it was. Sadness made Riley vulnerable and cry in class, I would literally die if I did that. I never cry infront of anyone. I hold my breath and cry quietly. Feeling happiness comes with feeling sadness, but when you’re sad all of the time, being happy feels wrong.

    You need sadness to 'appreciate' joy, which is why sadness was an important part of Riley's life. And the chaos was both Joys and Sadnesses fault (mostly sadness) bc Joy was overly selfish, core memories were important even if it was a sad one, Joy said herself how important they were, but she wouldn't let Sadness's core memory in bc it wasn't her own emotion. They wouldn't have gotten lost had joy let the core memories go where it belonged. and Sadness (maybe) would not have been that way had Joy let her be in charge at times because joy would let everyone except Sadness have a turn with Riley's emotions (With good intentions) but still.

    Same for Riley coming home and opening up to her parents about how sad she has been since the move.

    I saw this movie in theaters when I was 6 and Now I’m 15. That is Crazy. When I was younger I was a little Rambunctious but I chilled Out as I got older or Maybe it’s the trauma I faced. 1:55 Babies are Crying Straight out of the Womb. Thats Sadness they’re experiencing. 4:15 I actually do like Broccoli, like Cold broccoli.🥦

    Love falls under core emotions, friendship and family. How people express and interpret love depends on their experiences, so it falls under memories

    It's so frustrating how they can't understand anything OMG!!!!! Riley only have 5 basic emotions because they are trying to show how kids life its simpler (and how kids have no uderstaing at how they feel) the island colapsed because she was not feelong neither joy or sadness and she was depressed so she could not see how important those moments were to her. A 11 year old kid being depressed its actually very normal (because hormones and feelong are crazy). Sadness need to exist not only because without sadness you would not see the important of good moments but because feel sad its normal, its necessary, its a way to process things that happen to you.
    That was such an amazing movie. I saw it was an adult because im old and already an adult when it relesead it but its such important tô show kids they can and SHOULD feel everything, a lot of problems we have as adults its because we dont feel things as kids and then er spend a loooooot of money in therapy to process it
