    Welcome to another iteration of the Railway Review series. It's the elderly seaweed ridden excuse of a train, that is the Class 313 today. Oh dear.

    I used to hate them, and then when I rode on one in October 2018, I adored them. They're alright I guess, but if you want to learn how to drive them I'm your man :-P

      I think I adore Lidl more than these trains. At least Lidl offers some fantastic custard cream biscuits at 30p a packet.
      Still, you are a qualified consultant on how to drive these sorry excuses of trains, so there's that :).

    The class 313 is now history. Two units remain preserved, the former Network Rail unit 313121 in Scotland, and 313201 somewhere else (Eastleigh?)

    The 313s been around for almost 46 years. Same age to the HST's

    I quite liked the 313, in a quirky this is what the beginning of the BR modern EMU was like sort of way. That said, they haven't moved on from 1976, when commuters on them were kept from being confused by the basic facilities provided by the magical doors that moved for them

    The 507 and 508 variants are special to me. They've been running on the Merseyrail network ever since they were built back in 1978, they were the first trains I'd ever rode on, and they sound so good...

      508's started out on the southern region of BR working out of Waterloo and based at Wimbledon. They were 4 car units back then. They gave up a trailer car to be used in class 455/7's upon transfer to Liverpool.

      They were originally meant to go to Merseyrail, but BR diverted them down south first.

    I don’t know whether I should feel lucky that I have only had to ride these units once; considering the 455 is one of the trains I ride everyday, and the interior of those units gets more disgusting by the day + most the problems you mentioned in your review of the 455. By the way, I’m really enjoying this series specifically and I can’t wait for the next one! Keep up the great work, mate!

    Also 313/314/315 to me fall under the "so run down it's got character" also hey, at least you guys got door buttons in England on these guys. 314s had none of them, it was all operated by DOO. In fact they barely saw any upgrade other than relivery/new moquette.

      Awww, that's a shame. Mind you, I don't remember seeing any door buttons on the 507s and 508s when I went down to Liverpool as the doors were operated by the guard.

      @@MaverickHunterDaniel That's right, the 507s and 508s have their doors operated by the guard, the reason for this is because Merseyrail is a metro-style system, it's similar to the London Undeground, and it's got a fast service, for a National Rail train, one train every 15 minutes. Not bad...

    Actually even that their just about 20 years old really the 313s will be replaced by the 377s!

    I'm honestly surprised that the Great Northern units didn't get replaced sooner, considering their age. I wonder if the 717s will remain in service for as long as the 313s did.
    As for the Southern units, I think they look a bit out-of-place pottering about on West and East Coastway services. In my opinion, they also look suitable for journeys no longer than Brighton to Seaford (especially given the minimal facilities). Then again, I've never been on a 313 in real life (let alone gone to England), so for all I know, regulars on the Seaford branch might hate them.

      I think the 313s were poorly suited for that area too, though the benefit of having them is having more 377s to use elsewhere across SN's network.

    1 year on 16 out of the 19 Southern 313/2s are still in traffic, 313 202, 3217, 3214 are semi parts'ed out by the Engineering team. These will head to Arlington Fleet Services to subsequently be fully disamntled to get every last part useful out of them before being chopped

    again amazing video Maverick, the SN 313s are much better in terms of being reliable (barring 313 220) and should all be due to get a Refurbishment at somepoint in the near future from what ive been told. .... also We should make a plan to execute Order 66 on the IETs ASAP.... (theyre rappidly multiplying ....)

    I am very sad before this video I thought this train was good “nope” I only like it because I have never had the luxury to be on a class 43 (HST) because I am in Brighton, portslade. :(

    How is it that in the 21st century, main line trains can run without any toilets? Is that how they get away with disability access and adapted facilities? Southern need to get rid now and use 3 car 377;s or bring the 365's back onto the 3rd rail network.

      @@MaverickHunterDaniel yeah i cant confirm it 100%, but aparently there's plans to scrap GX and move the 387s over to Southern who will cascade 377/1s (i think) to the routes run by 313s. Idk how true that is, but i do believe GTR wanna try and ditch the 455s and 313s ASAP

    It's funny that you make fun of both Liverpool and the PEP classes, yet Merseyrail, running the antiquated 507/508 class, runs one of the most on time passenger services in the country....
    I guess that comes from making do with underfunding by the government for decades....

      A good point. Though it is also helped by Merseyrail being separate from most of the other mainlines and not having to share it's services with other trains. Also having only a single type of train (just roll with that pls) helps with the reliability angle too. :)
      inb4 reliability drops like a stone once the 777s enter service.
