    In addition to Timothy's observations, in the northern climates cemetery urns and planters are turned upside down in the fall so that winter snow and ice expansion does not destroy them. If they're still upside down in the middle of summer it means that nobody was there to turn them rightside up and plant them for the season when the warm weather returned.

    It's interesting to see so many young folks willing to walk & hike through cemeteries with steep uneven terrain which takes a considerable amount of effort. It comes to mind whether I'll be remembered 100 years from now & if anyone would be willing to visit my burial site. Today, many won't go to cemeteries unless they're attending a funeral.

    And so we've learned that an upside down cement planter in summer is a sad sight. The people who had lovingly tended it have gone too. Thanks for another great trip!

  • @waterguy956
    @waterguy956 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The upside-down planters could be to prevent them from cracking due to water collecting in them and freezing.

    The upside down planters often are a result of family members no longer planting in them, and combatting the mosquito population by not leaving pools of water for them to breed in, assuming that these planters don't have a drain or drain plug in them. Or maybe it is like you have shown in other cemeteries, people will use them as ash trays which to say the very least looks tacky in a cemetery, and I somewhat lean on disrespectful. Not knocking the ash trays in family mausoleums, as the ones you have shown, have been cleaned out after the visits.

    I've never seen so many headstones in between mature trees. Maybe they were planted not long after burial? Very interesting & unique discoveries at this location. Thanks for your enthusiastic adventure tour Matt! End of summer is approaching fast. I prefer the fall for these locations. Hidden stones are easier to see without the seasonal vegetation.

    Those urns were tipped upside down in the fall so in winter they don’t fill up with rain abs ice and crack them
    But looks like someone has not been back this season to replant something in them

    Sojourner Truth is a very interesting person in history. And there is a museum about her in her old home in the area. That chapel had a huge garage door and looks more like a receiving vault . Probably no longer in use as service is usually done in the Funeral home or the persons church. Winters are harsh in that area and they turn the planters upside down so they don't fill with water , freeze and crack in winter. If they aren't used they don't get turned around. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well ❤

    That Mausoleum in front of Sojourner Truth’s grave was C.W. Post founder of Post Cereals which I think now is General Mills and his daughter Marjorie Post was the owner of Mar-Ja-logo the home that Donald Trump owns in Florida that I believe got raided not that long ago.

      Have to agree with you Mandy. Love the variety of the markers, mausoleums ( not on all cemeteries/ graveyards),the layout of the places.In Europe we see a lot of places with 3-5 type markers, all in neat rows ( easier to maintain), hardly any trees or flowers.Only in the older places there is more to see.Also depend on the country and sometimes the religion , next to rules & regulation of the owners .

    Does anyone know why Charles Post was interred in Battle Creek, Michigan? Other that his brief stay at the Battle Creek Sanitarium where he stole a few cereal recipes from Kellogg, he really didn’t have much of a connection to the area.

    I'm sorry Matt. This one had too much grass and landscape filming for me. I originally subbed for the mausoleums and headstones, and being able to read them. You just skimmed by most of these.

    • @njmcd
      @njmcd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt's vids focus on layout, landscaping, interesting finds, not reading stones. Just pause the vid. For stone reading go to "Sidestep Adventures".

    • @dm607
      @dm607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@njmcd In older cemetery vids we went bush bashing looking for hidden stones etc. We also looked at headstones and got to peep into mausoleums, usually without having to hit pause. I love Sidestep cemetery vids and have just discovered Serenity Sue in Ireland. Her graveyard vids are awesome.

    What makes you think that these private mausoleums would be unlocked? With all of the vandalism in this world, people don't want you in them. I've been walking cemeteries for over 45 years not once have I tried opening the doors. Looking in through windows, fine. No respect for other people things. How would you like it if somebody tried opening your car while it's parked while your walking around the cemetery.
