IDK - Well, unless you're not a warm weather person. I'm a winter girl - all year round, a veritable vampire where sun is concerned, but I do love olive oil, wines, pasta and lots of seafood, so coastal is best (anywhere in the world actually). I stayed in Alicante, a coastal city in Spain and they enjoy fresh catches everyday of the year.

I recall the first time i went to Italy I was about 12 years old we stayed at my grandparents home 10 acres of a beautiful hill top farm..My mom had asked me to go get some vegetables for dinner and I replied ok ma give me the money i will go buy it in the small town below ..She looked me in the eye and starting laughing ..She replied turn around the corner of the home the vegetables are all around you. I will never forget that and I am in my 60's now. The farm had everything you can imagine. silly little city boy.

I was raised in the city though, and I still long to live off the land and eat from the work of my own hands! I am now in my late 60s and still deeply admire those who work so hard in their gardens, to can, make wine, as your friend does, etc. Thank you for sharing such a different way of life that is so hard, but so very good! Love this!

A beautiful garden. I pray that people wake up to what they may loose. Growing up in Southern California, we had small farms they grew various vegetables and the families would have a small stand for people to buy. Now, the fields have buildings. You can't get the health benefits from fruits and vegetables bought in markets, especially "big box" chain stores, there is no taste! The taste home grown or bought from local farmers is so different and amazing. I have a small little garden and enjoy it. It gets me outside and enjoy the beautiful fresh air. We need more home gardens, even if you have a small space you can grow in containers. Thank you taking us along. Lets hope this will inspire people to preserve those amazing old gardens.

Good Morning, Nikki & Carlo. We absolutely loved this video. You two have inspired my Husband, Sturg and I, to plant a garden in our backyard. We completely understand the joy you are talking about. We have eaten many bell peppers in different meals, I’ve made lots of pesto from our basil plants, we canned our first batch of tomatoes 🍅 and it was really enjoyable doing this together as a couple. I always look to yours and Carlos way of doing things in the garden. Very impressive and it works every time. We love spinach. Just being able to go pick some from the garden along with cherry tomatoes, or Roma tomatoes is the best! Thank you for your wonderful videos. I’ve watched them over and over. I never tire of your views, friends, kayaking and Holly. She’s the sweetest little pet. 💗. Can’t wait for the next one😉🥰

Good morning..what a great film..thank you so much...I loved seeing the garden...during lockdown..gardening and growing veggies became more popular here in the U.K..maybe in Italy young families will re discover the joy of gardening and feeding a family from home grown vegetables.
Gardening is good for our mental health...being outside..working on the soil etc they have found it helps with people's well being.
You could send your film to Gardeners' World ( BBC) they asked for home videos and had one from Canada the other week.
You should plant a Kiwi tree ?

I LOVED this garden tour and all the detailed info (and I'm not even a gardener!) I wish I was younger and more physically able, as I would happily chuck everything and come learn to make the wine and continue the tradition. In past trips to Italy, I saw many little gardens growing up the folds between the mountains, and I loved to imagine everything growing down there just out of sight. Thanks for filling me in on what I imagined. I just love the ingenious set-up your friend had for getting the crushed grape juice down into the basement room for the next step in the process. I also loved how they run grape vines above on trellises and then plant potatoes etc. below them. Such efficiency! Great video!

We have a garden and it’s amazing in the summer, just to go out and get fresh vegetables is so satisfying. A fresh garden salad is so much more tasty then the lettuce we buy in the winter months. We have even planted raspberries and blueberries bushes in our garden, so fingers crossed they grow. Thank you for the video.

I have been a part of helping with a friend’s small organic vineyard here in Canada and the contrasts, and similarities, are so interesting! I loved hearing of the use of willow for tying the cordons - much more romantic - and organic than using the small plastic ties most larger vineyards use now. Great video

Hi. So many complimentary comments this obviously touched everyone’s hearts. Both sets of my grandparents had gardens of vegetables from 1930s up to late 1970s. As you say , food for eating, no flowers and already the next generation stopped by moving into towns for work with smaller gardens. I think this current generation is starting to grow vegetables and flowers together, on a small scale. Unfortunately we don’t have heat and sun like you do for great tomato growing Can’t wait for Sundays vlog. Lovely vlog with Carlo and your knowledgeable and friendly neighbour. From Ireland 🇮🇪

Thank you that was awesome. You are right it’s so sad to see these skills being lost...that’s why I also subscribe to pasta grannies. Once this knowledge is lost it can never come back. I would happily potter around those gardens .

As one drives along the Amalfi coast, there are so many terraced garden areas. Thank you for showing a terraced garden from “ground level”. The taste of the fruits and veggies, homegrown, is far above store purchased. It IS a lot of work! The figs! Need to snag a few, fill with honey goat cheese and wrap in prosciutto! Another wonderful video!

Alstroemeria! The flower you showed at the beginning of the garden tour. Happens to be a favorite of mine. ❤
Love the private (friends) gardens, there is something special about a home garden. You have been inspiring me to get out and do more with my yard. Learned a lot of fun things on this video, thank you!!

That garden is absolutely fabulous, how could someone not want to carry on that way and produce their own vegetables and fruit.....let alone the wine.....I know it must be gruelling work Nicki , but how fabulous ....you can see how these people survive and their love of the land........so fascinating....thank you.......Donna in Toronto

deewaipio...a lot of young people also work incredibly hard to earn a living. Many would love to grow their own fruit and vegetables but city life isn't always compatible with this. Some have seen their workload increased since Lockdown; whilst working from home (money less so) and any leisure time they get is spent having a well earned rest 🕊️👒🌻🙂

Love the whole priciple of growing, so passionate about growing your own is a joy to watch. I have never seen a pistachio either and love the inventive ways of growing. Yes it would be such a shame if the next generation would not take on gardening. Wish we had a bit of that climate in the UK.

Hi Nicki et al. Really interesting no, fascinating, video. Good that you have documented the skill and accumulated knowledge of a food gardener growing in a hot climate. Amusingly, we also have 3 kiwis - two females and one male. The females grow vigorously but the male still small - I think it is henpecked. That is the end of my main comment, long version coming up. Skip comment in 3..2..1.. Still here … This was a two coffee cup video. Watched it twice over immediately. We had success with veg growing in England but we have moved to France, at foot of Mediterranean mountains (Roussillon plain) and we find it really hard to grow anything. The problem being the soil, not the sun. I say ‘be patient’ and my wife encourages me by saying that I have an ‘inner peasant’ that keeps me going. When in England we grew a lot of beetroot. I mention this to give you a a simple recipe. Perhaps you already know of it. Beetroot sandwich - but done as follows. Plant beetroot, grows very well in heavy clay’ee soil, but appears to be quite tolerant of most soils. Watch the little tops appear half in and half out of the soil, pick whenever it is a convenient size, bigger not necessarily better, boil just long enough for the skin to start to come away, remove and wash in cold water, use your hands - with rubber gloves - to rub the skin off - really easy, now the must do - put whole beetroots into tallish straight glass jars and fill to top with either good quality apple cider vinegar or wine vinegar. Store for not less than two months before eating, remove one as required, cut into approx 1/4 inch slices and place naked onto good quality bread. i.e. no garnish, no butter. Approx zero calories (o.k, bit of an exaggeration) and loads of vitamins. My wife ate one of these every day at work all year. If you have not tasted one you haven’t lived. The beetroot will however get progressively softer if left in the jar for too long - that won’t normally be a problem because everyone loves them, still conserved but a bit soft to be at its best. When I said naked, there is one exception that I personally like but it is probably not for everyone, I spread Marmite (Vegemite if Australian) in addition to the beetroot, on the bread thinly, Mmm.

Stunning garden. I think people forget that you have to eat with the season and preserve what you can. The true joy of a garden is necessity and abundance . Work with the seasons and keep you in contact with nature. So impressed with that little slice of heaven. I'm lucky I have never had live in a time of live or starve times. My garden keeps me humble. Thank you for sharing this passionate gardener.
