Fun with Squirrels

  • Searching for bird feeder squirrel-proofing options, I came across the Roller Feeder website and ordered one. I've been having a blast watching the squirrels try to figure a way into the birdseed and just getting themselves dumped on the ground for their trouble. I'm so impressed with the ingenious design, solid construction and squirrel-confounding entertainment that I just wanted to share - but I receive no benefit, financial or otherwise from this recommendation.
    Because the design is a bit different, some birds are a little shy at first. They say that cardinals are the last to figure it out, but I had chickadees and gold finches using it the same day I hung it up so I'm sure that in the next week or so, just about everybody will have figured it out. The feeder keeps out larger nuisance birds like crows, grackles and blue jays, plus red squirrels and raccoons - though so far, I haven't seen any of these trying it.
    The squirrels used to clean out my previous (supposedly squirrel-proof) feeder in two days, so I expect the seed savings to be huge. The company says the feeder will pay for itself in birdseed savings in something like 3 months or less which seems likely.

    That's slick!! I had a wooden feeder that I put nails on leaving them standing - wrapped wire from one nail to next- ran extension cord into house - watched / waited - when Mr Squirrel got on it I plugged 'er in --zip zap zoom! Wouldn't ya know it? Squirrel would climb on feeder and was very careful that none of his legs touched the wire / nails!! Smart lil' buggers.....

    i hung a feeder from a cable a good piece from a tree and the squirrels would not mess with it but neither would the birds. i have had several seed feeders hanging around at various points and the birds never messed with any of them. i guess the seeds were bad.

  • @raydean1384
    @raydean1384 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The cool thing about this feeder is that although a couple of the videos show them hanging way out from any vertical object (tree trunk , etc) you actually can mount fairly close to both horizontal and vertical ingress routes, and the squirrels still cannot defeat. I've had one for 9 years and it has saved me lots in seed, although I do have very hungry birds cardinals, bluebirds, woodpeckers, and nuthatches, and other smallish birds. This will not feed anything much larger than a cardinal. Raccoons can defeat it, but they have those little human hands so it's near impossible but mine only come around a couple times a year, after I pout red cayenne pepper in the seed they don't come back.

      get a squirrel baffle or a hanging dome baffle and install the feeder from a pole with an arm and a hook. Make sure to keep the pole away from all trees, fences, furniture- anything the squirrel can use to launch itself from and jump onto the pole ABOVE the baffle.

    I'm here to say squirrels are highly intelligent and fun loving and playful. And they are the most important food source for things like hawks, bobcats and other predators. They also play an important role in nature by populating forests and other types of trees and plants when they bury seeds. You can kiss goodbye lots of beautiful wild life and nature if there are no squirrels. They prey on no other animals. Wildlife preys on them.

      I agree with you as far as the USA is concerned, but the American grey squirrel has invaded the UK and is a huge pest. So much so that it is illegal to let one go if it is caught in a trap, or for a vet to treat one. It's all part of the European Squirrel Initiative to protect our native reds.
      They kill young trees by ring-barking them, they carry squirrel pox which has all but eliminated the native red squirrel and they also eat fledglings. They'll steal the young bird out of the nest and sit there chewing on it whilst it's still alive!
      Now, all this would normally be nature taking its course (red in tooth and claw etc,) but unfortunately the grey is an alien invader as far as we in the UK are concerned and being out of place and causing havoc, we're trying hard to eradicate them bye trapping, shooting and by any means possible.
