      As somebody else wrote, you could just try saying that. But it probably helps to sit down and try to write down concrete points that bother you. Feelings, situations, thoughts etc. I had my first appointment recently and had a list of stuff that bothers me but in the ~ 45 min I could only talk about a part of it.

    I thought I was not ready to get help, was strong enough, didn't need it...but then I got forced to see a psychiatrist and to be honest it was such a huge relief to have some support, someone who takes you seriously! I have not made much progress but just talking about it lifts so much weight of my shoulders! Please seek out for help, I know this first step seems impossible but it is worth a try!

    Oh God, where I live the psychiatrist only spends like 10 minutes interviewing you. When I was 16 I had some mild OCD and depressive symptoms, and after such 10-minute interview the psychiatrist diagnosed me with bipolar disorder. Thankfully, my mom eventually took me to another doctor and she said I was fine, she only recommended that I see a therapist. But many people don't get that kind of second opinion. I remember taking my bipolar medication and barely being able to hold on to my chair because my sense of balance was so impaired.

      On my first visit I was prescribed Vyvanse, Adderall, Valium for daytime anxiety, Xanax for night time anxiety, Ambien, Fluvox, and Gabapentin... Every month I would fill the Rx's but only take the Vyvanse, and the occasional Valium. It's what had worked well for me in the past. I had the type of private insurance that would make doctor's drool. On more than one occasion I have been prescribed some seriously heavy duty meds like Opana, Percocet, benzodiazapines of all types. I basically just stock piled them because it's always good to have stuff like that on hand. It's sad though, because those doctor's didn't really care about me. They just knew that they could bill my insurance insane service fees, and I wouldn't even have to pay a co pay.

I often say "I think you should do" "This would be great for you" but pull back and say I'm getting over enthusiastic. "I can see skills but you need to see it and want it too. All activity has to have some meaningful purpose to the individual

    I got referred to a psychiatrist in the UK about 15 years ago, he wore those round glasses and a black suit, he really looked like one from in movies, was intimidating, he never spoke a word to me, it was his assistant that spoke to me, he was speaking to me thru him, I thought he was very rude in his approach, he didn't even look at me, just gazing at whatever was on his clipboard, his assistant just ticked a few boxes then the psychiatrist just prescribed me some random drugs. Needless to say that I didn't take the drugs, I was just treated as if I'm just a number.
    I wasn't in there long, maybe 15 minutes. Never had any follow-up with him as it would of been a totally waste of time. He looked very stuck up and think that he thinks he's better than everyone else and that he probably believed we're not worthy of his attention. After this I just see them as legal drug pushers, I prefer psychologists as they don't prescribe drugs.
    Mostly exercise and a healthy diet is much more beneficial as long as red meats is included.

    My first visit was about 20 mins, quick history, checked blood pressure, prescribed some meds (that I was already taking for other reason). And that was the longest visit with him, I went to him 4 times before i said.. no thank you. Cost me 100 dollars per visit and it was useless. Took me many years before I went back to see someone again as I was so disillusioned. So if anyone gets a doc like I did, run!!! And get a new one, most are not like that!

    I have been going to therapy for about 3 months now and my therapist has been saying I should rlly see a psychiatrist because my anxiety is really bad and it holds me back from doing normal things without feelings like I’m gonna throw up or cry. I don’t have any trauma in life so my therapist thinks this is a chemical imbalance or hereditary. I hope the psychiatrist could help 🤞🏽

    Hi Kati! I was wondering if you could do a video about sexual assault ,sexual harassment and sexual bullying in the school setting. I feel your videos have addressed some of those but you really only talk about people who are older . Also I think all your vids are amazing and I subscribe to you on my main account. :)

    I'm here because I'm about to book a first visit and it costs 50 dollars (It's very expensive in my country, and it's the average rate). I'm scared that I will happen to be under a bad psychiatrists, knowing most psych students in my uni when I was in college were the most narcissistic people I've met. Then I read the comments section (It's a bad habit, I know) and learned people's experiences with psychiatrists and meds. That got me even more scared. I hope I end up with a good psychiatrist just like the one in the video, but he seems to be in expert level and is probably on the higher rate. I can only afford average rate psychiatrists.

    I watched a movie ... "Dear Zindagi" before consulting my therapist... i'd suggest everyone to watch the movie... i wasn't sure weather i need therapy or not.. the movie helped me understand ... there's nothing to be ashamed of,.. if u need help, there's nothing wrong asking for it...

    Does anyone know why therapists and psychiatrists often don't work together with their patients? I asked my social worker if I could work with a therapist and psychiatrist that work together, communicate regularly, etc... and he said "Good luck, those therapists and psychiatrists are like unicorns... Hard to find". This makes no sense to me, I feel there should be a law that psychiatrists be in communication with their patient's therapist in order to prescribe them psych meds

      They compete to see who gets the most clients. No psychiatric drugs should be prescribed, it does nothing but make people worse and destroys lives.

    Hello Katie, I have a question... How can a person be honest about their true feelings to their psychiatrist without risking being committed to a psychiatric crisis center? Example: Say I was to mention I thought of committing suicide, but haven't acted on it and told my psychiatrist this. Is that grounds for the psychiatrist to have me 302, 5150 or whatever...?

    • @bnewtz7492
      @bnewtz7492 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have intentions of commiting or have attempted before, you may be sent to a psych ward.

    I've been putting it off for a long time because I heard they'll make you do a physical exam. I know it's bad and I should be getting physicals anyway, but I have a very strong aversion to being touched.

    Can you explain the difference between a therapist, psyciatrist, ect?

    • @justletmelisten243
      @justletmelisten243 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Psychiatrists are medical doctors who are specifically trained in mental health and are capable of prescribing medication if needed. Therapy (and therapists) span a lot of different styles. There's cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT, talk therapy, etc. Therapists are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medication. Whether you go to a therapist, psychiatrist, or both depends on your needs.
