Thank you so much for talking about this topic. Hoarding is something that hits close to home for me since my mother is an undiagnosed hoarder and I lived in a space of hoarding (I’m no longer in that environment anymore thankfully). Because of living in an environment such as that I’ve wanted nothing to do with mess and it has brought me into a bad mental place which has lead me to therapy and getting other help. I’ve been collecting houseplants for about 4 years and have officially hit 50 plants and it has greatly improved my mental health. Unfortunately a lot of my family members look at it as hoarding and compare me to my mother which puts me in a panic. It was nice to hear someone in this community discuss this topic and reassure me that what I’m doing isn’t hoarding but collecting. Thank you so much Ashley for posting this content, it really made me feel good about my collection again!

It sounds from the panic that you are still very very far from hoarding and are vulnerable to the opposite. Passion and intensity for something is not the same as overdoing it. One time I saw an advice column agreeing with the parent who wrote in to complain at the teenager who played guitar 5 hours a day was too much but in fact to become a real qualified musician you would have to do that much as a minimum for years.

Mindfulness & intent is the key here - being mindful of what our intentions are & keeping our actions in line with our intentions. While I am quite certain that I am not hoarding, keeping a check on impulsive & compulsive purchases can definitely be a struggle. More often than not these days, however, I will leave plant shopping empty handed because I am mindful of what my plant goals are & am not willing to sacrifice those for mere random plant purchases. Thank you for this video - very informative & helpful.

I love that this wasn't clickbait and actually addressed a real topic. You're totally right that the culture does tend to foster the behaviour. I'm sure for a lot of people it doesn't even occur to consider it as being a possible problem, cause hey, "its just plants!". Thank you for shining a light on this!

I have a family member who has undiagnosed hoarding and growing up with them made me feel so used to living in a constant state of messiness and "cleaning" consisted of making the messiness appear ordered. Now, grown up and diagnosed with OCD and PTSD, among other things, I'm finding I'm accumulating many things; PLANTS, clothes, pots, etc. At one point I was even saving dead leaves... BUT now when I need to throw away dead leaves or declutter I tell those things "thank you". For dead leaves, thank you for growing to help make this plant look so beautiful. For clothes, thank you for letting me wear you and for covering me, keeping me warm, etc. Being in a state of gratitude when letting go has helped so much. ANOTHER thing that my psychologist has helped me with is when I do see something in the store or online to ask yourself if you're going to say yes to those things. Plants ask you, "Please buy me, please take care of me, please tend to me." And clothes say, "Please wear me, please show me off, etc." And it's okay to say no. It's okay to say no. 💙 I hope these tips help someone! They've helped me! Thank you, Ashley, for this video! 💙🌱

This is why I not allow myself to have a grow tent. I need my plants always in my line of sight. Their upkeep is part of my daily cleaning and they are focal points in the rooms. When I say focal points I mean my stand out areas that you constantly want to maintain because it makes your space inviting, cheerful, calm, and happy. I have one simple rule when it comes to my plants. "If* it's maintenance is riding your @ss it's time to review what you truly love and what is nothing but work.

I've experienced both real hoarding in my family, and plant hoarding in my friends (I actually got a lot of my own plants from an ex-hoarder) and it shakes me to my core. I try to always leave my room cleaner than when I came in. If you're at a point where everywhere you look is crazy plant mess, it's time to reevaluate. I'll be letting go of a heckin ton of plants this month. ✌️

Thank you for talking about this topic. I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and hoarding/collecting is a difficult subject for me. One thing that has really helped me in terms of how this affect my houseplants, is to differentiate between plants I like, and plants I like to grow. In other words, learning to admire a plant without needing (or even wanting) to have it in my home. This has made the world of a difference for how I view my plant collecting. Love the PlanTEA-series, it's so important to talk about these things.

Hi Ashley! I discovered a very active online plant community in the summer of 2021, and while I have made some sweet connections with wonderful people in the plant community, I was astonished that some of them literally had 100's of plants in their homes! So, I had a talk with myself and decided that it was best for me to learn to take great care of the few plants I have rather than purchase a whole bunch of plants just to fit in with the I Instagram plant community. I am happier this way because I am learning how to properly care for my plants, how to use them to bring style to my home, and they really do bring me a lot of joy! BTW, I love your channel! Keep doing what you're doing!☘️🧡

Thank you. I am a minimalist in all areas but plants. During covid era I collected way too many, but have shed all but 40. What helped me is using same minimalist strategies on plant collection as other possessions ie: shed duplicates, damaged, only keep what fits loosely in the space, shed tables, shed floor plants, removed any that blocked view. Also recently shed all categories that are even slightly toxic for my cat (that covered a LOT). Incentive to shed (for me) was when plant care time became more of a chore instead of a joy.

Not gonna lie. I started my house plant journey several years ago, just solidly wanting more and more. Nothing was enough. I'd buy plants to prop, not because I liked it or wanted it. I ended up with hundreds of plants.... and so many small babies I didn't have room for. My home was consumed. It looked like I was selling plants as I had so many duplicates. Yet I couldn't bare parting with any of them as I'd spent months watching them grow. Eventually, I moved house. And realised the situation I had put myself in. There was no way I could bring them all with me. I ended up gifting 200+ plants to friends, family and strangers. It bought me the most happiness I've ever experienced when it comes to plants. Not having them, but sharing them. Watching other people experience the joy I felt when I was watching them grow.
I still have loads of plants. But more respectively so. They're big and lush. I've always looked after my plants. But I didn't realise I was spending 5hours every single day caring for them. I tried to make a healthier version of an unhealthy obsession? I now only have one morning a week dedicated to plant chores. And I find myself just walking around looking at their beauty more often 🥰

I'm going to be honest, I watch some of your videos, but am not a "loyal" fan exactly because most of your videos have that vibe of "shopping addiction" to me, so I'm really glad that's changing and you're realizing how thin the line between collecting (heathy) and hoarding (unhealthy) is. It's an amazing breakthrough for your personal growth that's going to show in many aspects of your life and also for your platform. Keep going!

Really enjoyed this! There’s times I definitely feel hoarder-ish, simply because of size (150ish plants), but everything is well taken care, styled, and for the most part intentional.
As of the past few months I’ve even stopped says ‘’my plant collection”, and rather say “my plants”. Only bc in my head I associate collecting things with being a hoarder.
    Great video!

Actually your previous video about money spending and just collecting/having plants that you just don't even like that much caught me just at the right time, I was definitely over spending and getting caught up in buying plants that I saw over and over again on instagram/youtube but didn't actually like, I was able to stop the non stop trips to look for pots, and plants and really start enjoying and caring for the plants I already have, I do a lot more trades now and enjoy growing my smaller plants into nice big ones! thanks for taking about this!!!

I really appreciate the research you put into this topic--it's very relevant for us in the plant community, and interesting info. Recent research has also linked ADHD to hoarding disorder (about 20% of people with ADHD also have a hoarding disorder). I know I have to be careful and work hard on curbing my impulse to buy every pretty plant I see.

I have ADHD and OCD, and when it comes to hoarding, the combination of ADHD impulsiveness and OCD obsessiveness is basically like throwing oil on a fire lol. I’m very fortunate in that I have a great support system and have been able to get therapy over the years, but I know I have hoarding tendencies and it’s something I have to keep working on. The past few years I’ve really been trying to become more conscious about my stuff. I watch a lot of decluttering/minimalism content on YT to keep my mindset on track.

It’s a really important point to spread awareness that telling people “you can never have too many plants” is actually harmful in some cases! I’ve personally noticed this type of mindset among members of my local plant group, where some members in specific are always commenting on others’ posts encouraging them to buy a plant when someone is on the fence. While I get where people are coming from - thinking they’re being a supportive plant friend - some people actually struggle with plant hoarding and need someone who can help them take a step back and be more mindful before making a plant purchase

Out of all of your videos I like this one the most. What a great idea. I hope this helps people realize that you don't have to have every plant everyone else has. Or even that you don't have to have expensive plants. My favorite plants are pothos and schefflera. At one time I had to have them all, but I realized I had some I didn't even care to have and once I let it go I felt so much better about myself. There are some people that think they have better plants if they have plants that cost more, And to me that's just sad. Thanks for doing this video. I truly hope this helps someone fell better. ✌️💚😊

I watched this hoarding episode on TLC where a lady hoarded cats. She had dead cats frozen in her freezer and some in her fridge. It was sad. I definitely am not a hoarder, if I don't use it or display it in 6 months, it goes to the trash or donation center. I love my plants but they are organized and alive. My house is clean and I don't like clutter.

Plant hoarding is like animal hoarding. It's not about number, it's not hoarding if all your plants/animals are well taken care off.
It IS hoarding if you keep acquiring more while being unable to care properly for those you already have. If your plants/animals are sick and/or dying, and you keep acquiring more, it's hoarding.

Thank you for adressing such a difficult topic. I know I have to keep myself in check because I quickly spiral into the "must save X item (even if it's 'trash' e.g. empty glass jars and cardboard boxes), must keep buying Y item, must NOT discard Z item because one day I might need it!!"-mentality, and I think my ADHD and OCD is to blame. Like over 50% of my wardrobe is either unused or something I've only used a few times, yet I still kept buying clothes and couldn't discard items I deep down knew I wouldn't use due to anxiety. I don't really buy clothes anymore, and I've managed to get rid of 2-3 full bags, but my closet is still bursting at the seams and I still need bedrollers to contain the rest. It's so important to recognize these patterns and develop the right tools to control them before they spiral into an unmanageable nightmare.

Thank you so much for this video, I think I dip in and out of hoarding. During your video I kept wondering which one I am??? I definitely like to collect plants and do my best to display them with some thought... but I'm not sure I'm a hoarder yet - I don't have any dead plants laying around, and if they look somewhat dead is cos I know they are on their way back, but if they do not make it, I don't stress about throwing them away eventually. I propagate a lot of plants, and I think here is my issue... eventually it all overwhelms me and the propagations find new homes (it gives me great pleasure to give plants to friends - its not about the glory, its about seeing the happiness on their faces), leaving me with space to start again, I find it almost impossible to not propagate the cuttings from the trimmed plants...
I think I do have an issue there of sorts, but at the moment I keep it manageable - just about.
I have plants in all 4 rooms of my home, including 7 heavily planted aquariums. I know what I have. I don't neglect any of them - but sometimes I am a little late with the watering.
I think it may go all the way back to the 80's where my father kept everything cos it could be useful one day, and my mother moaned at him, they were like ying and yang lol
So today I keep everything I can cos it will be useful - and it often is - and very often friends come for help lol
I quilt and have endless boxes of scrap fabrics cos it will be used some day.
As my aquarium plants grow I keep pushing them back in - if I have to many I give them to friends...
I am about to select the excess fish to sell on
I'm hoping this means I'm controlling/managing my hoarding
This is turning into an essay - you touched me with your research, and I think such honesty deserves honesty back, and if we all look deep inside ourselves we may see where we are going with this and hopefully manage it better.
Letting plants die is unfair, their life is precious too, they may be different to us, but they are alive never the less, so letting them in a box to die - its totally mean
    I better stop now ...
Ashley - thank you very much indeed for your video 😘😘😘😘
    Carlos

Hahaha good to know I'm not a plant hoarder.
I take in plants I like for free but I meticulously budget otherwise. Right now my space isn't properly set up but I have a toddler and I've had to adjust to childproofing. I'm fine when he pulls the babies off my spider plant but I couldn't leave anything toxic down when he was at that age. Now that I have another one coming I have to readjust AGAIN.
I have to small areas dedicated to struggling plants and plants I'm not sure about keeping but for the most part those areas are routinely switched out as plants rehab or I give them away. Not much dies under my care (I was SO MAD when I over watered a peperomia) and I do have plans to make nice areas for the plants that can no longer sit in low areas.
I got my Philodendron Maximum home! It's so tiny, but when it eventually grows up it's getting a massive spot in a south and east window corner that looks out to our pool. By that time both kiddos will be able to understand not to mess with it.

There are levels to hoarding. So dont get this sense of relief like oh thank god Im not a hoarder. I have a hoarder mentality, my mother is an undiagnosed hoarder but she is able to maintain organization. She is not holding on to trash but is always in collecting mode. I am like her where I've always collected something but im not as organized as she is. So just because your still able to function in your space does not mean you are not hoarding, you are just not as extreme as other hoarders. So don't dismiss it like oh thank god I dont fit the technical criteria of a hoarder but just keep in mind that there levels to these things. If you are always in collection mode and you have more coming in and not much coming out you are in the early stages of hoarding.

I was thoughtlessly using the hashtag #houseplanthoarder often on my insta posts. I realize now I was using this term far too loosely and I apologize and will now be strictly using #houseplantcollecting. Thank you for educating me and helping me change my behaviors!

I’ve just decorated my flat/apartment and have been buying a few plants and it can be addicting I just want one of everything, I have also been watching TH-cam videos on how to keep those plants but I have noticed that people have either got 10 nice lush healthy plants or 100 struggling ones with pots on every surface.
I think we have to Taylor our plant species to the area we have, light, temp etc and not try to grow everything

I am still pretty new to the plant world. I started about 2 years ago with some succulents. I own about 36 plants at the moment. I always trade or give away plants that do not bring me joy or that need rehab. I still go look at plants but rarely bring home any. I am focused on keeping the ones I have alive and happy. I only have 2 wishlist plants. One I have not been able to find locally (cebu blue pothos) and the other is just a fantasy at this point because my budget won't allow it (ppp). I don't want a ppp because they are popular or rare. I just love pink plants 😂 I have nanouks, pink panther callisia repens and a variegated hoya carnosa compacta that I love because of the pinks in them ❤ I know I can be a bit hoarder-ish so I try to be mindful of decluttering and donating things I don't need. So, thank you for making this video. It was very informative and I hope it helps others.

I guess I'm not totally hoarding, but leaning toward compulsive buying, since I intent to maintain all of my plant purchases.. however my garden does look messy and some plants might die and/or not grow optimally due to crowded environments..

I had a minor hoarding issue due to trauma and luckily I had a support system to help me identify and curb it. It started back up with plants when I started living on my own. Unfortunately my sister who is my roommate also had tendencies but never had the space to develop it as an issue until we moved out. She also has diagnosed ocd. She's in college now and has kept things from the 5th grade. She calls me out on my plant hoarding and I try to call her out on her "memorabilia" problem.

This might be dumb but there is a lot of hate out there for lithops. I have three in my collection and they are fun. Just wondering why so much hate. I get they aren't super showy but I find them interesting

My plant hoarding isn't harming anyone, gives me free snacks sometimes, helps me breathe, and looks nice.
I may look like i live in the jungles of Brazil but.... it's nice?

Hoarding is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. It causes huge waves of anxiety. I have OCD and am a collector in many hobbies; it's important not to confuse the two. Sometimes they are related, but many times they are completely different. I am lucky enough that these don't relate. Please don't be one of those people who says "oh I'm such a hoarder" or "oh I'm so OCD" unless you have that diagnosis.

2.5 percent of the world population is about 182 million people. That is a lot of plant hoarders.
