Today I decided to share some insight I have into the community. Except for the taboos, EVERYTHING in this video is MY OPINION, and are things that I have learned from being in the community for over a year now.
I worked on this video for weeks, evolving it from one angle to another. I think it came together really nicely, but let me know if you think I left anything out.
Any name drops in the comment section will result in deleted comments, and in some cases, blocking. We don't promote drama here. I am just discussing things that have happened, and if I wanted to drop names, I would have done it myself.
If you disagree with anything I've said, please let me know in the comments down below, but keep it civil. If you're rude or hateful I'll just delete your comments. That's not productive.
If you can relate to anything I've discussed, I'd love to hear your experiences!

The first part of this, I also want to say if you do offer a cutting or baby, actually OFFER it rather than assuming someone wants it. My dear MIL literally handed me 4 of her potted plants and told me to take them. I took some babies and gave her the pots back because I don't really care about those plants. =/ She was like "oh no they were for you" and I had to act like I didn't want to take all her beautiful plants in order to not just straight be like "I don't want all this."

Just wondering, why couldn’t you tell her that you only wanted a few of them? (Not judging you dude, just curious)
Maybe I’m not understanding this situation- maybe she’s trying to bond? It helps to share the reasons why you don’t want something; when I exchange plants or other things with ppl (bronzers and moisturizers, amirite?) I’ll say why it doesn’t work for me, like “this plant needs more sunlight than I have in my house” or “this is toxic to cats” or “ I’ve already got a million pots” or “lol I can’t wear this” bc usually the real reasons for not wanting things are fine, and you can fine tune your knowledge of someone this way. HOWEVER, I DONT KNOW YO LIFE. Maybe MIL is an oblivious dick, or I’m not fully understanding the issue here. Your point/advice is still important tho, I always tell ppl that I’m offering things to: if you don’t want this it’s fine! It won’t hurt my feelings if you can’t use something, dude. I don’t get why people don’t just explain things like that. And yes _of course_ I’m a dang over-explainer hermoine grainger bossy type. Also I’d like to understand the contentious MIL situations many ppl have better.

I have a friend who does this all the time. She offers me cuttings and I say like ok can I have this part? and she will like uproot an entire part of her plant to give to me and literally almost throw it at me. I went home with like 5 bare rooted plants because she just pulled them out and I said stop dont worry. I felt obliged to take them because she probably wouldve just thrown them out and I didnt want that to happen. so i then had to go and buy pots and soil to put them in and spend my late night doing it so they didnt die.... cost me so much money and all i wanted was a cutting...

@@psychosonozaki677 Aw, sounds like she knows it'll make you happy. Next time just pot it up in some sphagnum moss or stick it in a glass of distilled water. But imo, there are worse things than needing to do some emergency gardening.

Me and my best friend have a deal. We both buy different plants or trade or whatever and the first cutting always goes to the other. We both work together collecting plants too, so I do a lot of the selling of cuttings/plants to raise the funds and she does a lot of the sourcing because she is a bargain hunter and I'm always too impatient 😂
This however is probably not for everyone and it's mostly worked because we both started at around the same time and have similar taste in plants. And also that it's a pretty fair deal. Maybe sometimes she gets a micans and I get a albo monstera, but sometimes she gets the pink princess and I get the neon pothos. In the end it's a fair deal. And we both sort of see each other's collections as extensions of our own. For example, she traded a cutting of my hoya for a begonia she wanted. She doesn't like hoya, I'm not mad about begonia (and can't keep them alive anyway) so it was a deal that wouldn't have happened otherwise. She was happy, I didn't miss my one cutting. One day I'll trade a begonia for something 🤷‍♀️
Our deal is defiantly not for everyone but it makes our hobby much more fun for us and in the end much more cost effective 😊

Good topic, Ashley! Ha ha, yes drama! OMG I went to a meeting of a plant group that had a greenhouse (fundraiser). The President discussed the controversy of “who should make the soil mixture” Should the big plant people make it or small plant people make it, because it appeared that no one replenished the soil bin. There was a whole argument over it. Really? If you are going to pot up plants, make the soil mixture you need. Isn’t that part of the joy of plants? Overhearing some of the other petty side discussions at the group (while the President was talking 😳), I decided not join the group. 😢

I feel like it really depends how you ask friends for cuttings. Asking on the spot "hey can i have a cutting of xxxx" sounds very direct and in the moment but if you say " hey in the future if you ever have a spare cutting when xxxx is bigger Id love one!" it gives them time to debate it and decline if they just never want to give one and also allows for it to be forgotten in general. I would feel rude asking a friend for a cutting asap and like to keep it open-ended. as always it depends on your relationship.

Girlfriend! Saying no isn't rude or awkward! I used to have a hard time saying no to requests and I would feel really uncomfortable, but now I've changed my view on it. If someone askes me a question I will assume they want me to answer truthfully, and I will give them the answer yes or no. And if someone is upset by me saying no then it proves to me that they weren't really asking me, they were telling me to do something. And I don't care about upsetting that kind of person. I'm sharing this because learning to say no has been one of the healthiest and freeing things.
but that is definitely in person, I have no idea why someone would ask about something over the internet.

While in some cultures (Japan, especially) it IS considered rude to outright say "no", it's not considered rude in American culture, depending on how it's done (as in, "no, thank you" > "no way, stupid!"). 😀

My fav is when someone finds out you purchased a particularly pricey plant (most recently in my case a rooted Thai Const.) and they personally didn't want to spend that much so they asked to buy a cutting off of a plant I literally had just ordered, don't even have in my possession yet, to piggy back off the fact that I was willing to pay for the full plant and they want a cheap cutting. I'm not going to hack up my brand new plant for the sake of giving you a cheap out on getting an otherwise expensive plant. If what you're asking for is going to diminish the value and/or health of my plant and you're not adequately compensating me for that loss, it's definitely going to be a hard no.

What? Asking for a cutting is fine. TAKING it isnt. Personally i love when someone asks for a cutting. It means i grew a great specimen, and i am more than happy to share the genetics! It is different if you asked for a cutting from a small/ not mature specimen. That would be rude because you are asking them to risk killing their plant.

I'm quite a nerd, so when I get a hobby, I research the fuck out of it. Which means, I'm quite able to reply to people needing help on FB. However, a group of people decided to get mad at me and have been sending me PM's and harassing me on EVERY post they saw me reply to. Even people asking for help, have gotten mad at me when replying to their questions. That really got me down and really bugged me. Honestly, I just wanted to help with issues which people post, because I did not have that help when I started myself. To then get harassed for it was just too much. That's quite the pet peeve for me. If you ask for help, accept the help, no matter who it comes from.

Me: Thankyou so much, it's one of my absolute favourites :)
A.M: wud u send me cutting of it???
Me: aw I'm so sorry, I usually would. I just sent cuttings of my Tradascantia to someone on fb, but my Begonia Maculata Wightii recently went through a rough patch so i'm still rehabing her so she doesn't have enough healthy growth for me to cut anything off. I'm so sorry :(
A.M: PLEASE??????? my daughtr has cancer n all she wants is a polka dot begonia for her bedroom
Me: I'm so so sorry your daughter is going through that, that is truly awful. I am sending you all my love and i hope she recovers well. IF you like I can help you search for a good deal on the Begonia! I have some free time and I would be happy to help :) What country do you live in, so that I can find places that will ship to you.
A.M: but if u send it can be a birthday presnt!! please i rlly rlly want this plant!!!!!! (100 crying emojis)
Me: I'm so sorry, but I really can't take a cutting of my Begonia. She's not healthy enough to take a cutting from the only healthy growth she has. She would die if i took cuttings from her right now. If you tell me your budget I can help you find one.
A.M: i dont have budget PLEASE SHE IS IN HOSPITOL
Me: Please understand, I am so so sorry about your daughter but my plant is not big enough to take a cutting from.
A.M: u could just send her ur plant please it wud make her so happy please do this
Me: I understand, but I have some very serious medical issues myself. I am a disabled person and struggle a lot with mental health. My plants make me happy, they are my own form of therapy and mean the absolute world to me. Giving away one of my most beloved plants would effect me badly. I hope you can understand. I'm so sorry I couldn't help you.
A.M: u r selfish n greedy u r rich n have hundreds of plants and u wont give a little girl dieing of cancer just 1 plant!! it is just 1 plant please dont be like that just giv 1 plant please u can by other 1
Me: I am sorry you think i'm greedy or selfish. I am NOT rich. I told you I am disabled, I live on disability benefits and have to save hard for each of my plants and I do not have hundreds of plants, I only have around 20 plants and I had to wait and save for each of them and they mean a lot to me. Honestly I was planning to follow you and hopefully help you in the future when I was able, but you are being horrible to me now for no reason. I have offered to help you in every way I can.
A.M: HELP BY GIVING ME THE PLANT
A.M: ITS JUST A FUCKIN PLANT
Me: I've told you I cannot help you by giving you the plant. They are not "just plants" to me. They are things I have spent time caring for, tending to and loving. Please stop this now.
    A.M: U R SELFISH FUCKIN BITCH IM REPORTING U
A.M: HAV FUN BEING BANNED U FUCKIN BITCH
    A.M: SLUT (100s laughing emojis)
A.M: iv seen ur other page u fuckin slut

    Me: Please stop this.
A.M: u send my kid the plant she is dieing she has cancer please give me the plant
A.M: the polka dot one please
    A.M: ?????????????????????????????
    A.M: HELO???????
Me: Listen this is a new account, I don't want to start blocking and reporting people. Please just stop this and we'll forget it happened. If i'm giving away cuttings at some point in the future I will post it on my instagram. Let's just stop now ok?
A.M: HAHAHAHA U REPORT ME???? IL FIND UR FUCKIN HOUSE BITCH
    A.M: FUCKIN FAT SLUT

wow, some of these were shocking. To be jealous of someone having lots of beautiful plants is absolutely horrendous to me. Do they have any idea how difficult it can be to take care of the plants? I have a few and each one has its own needs and require its own nurturing. People need to stop following trends or wanting to be like others. Do You!!! Its mind blowing to me.

I guess I'm from a different generation of online plant people. When I started heavily growing houseplants, the only place to go to share about plants was on Garden Web way back when Spike owned the website, and you were sent to Disney when you cussed. There wasn't Instagram or youtube, you used Photobucket or ImageShack. Since then GW has been shuffled to different parent companies and I don't even think they have plant exchange forums anymore. I have gotten a lot of plants over the years through plant friends and I have rarely met one not willing to share if you have something comparable to trade. Although, plant sales have never been allowed on Garden Web, so maybe that is why it is so foreign to me that it would be considered rude in this day and age. Asking for a plant or cutting for postage would be considered rude to me although there are still people who do it.

When you said “Facebook groups focused on starting drama” I was like “OMG SHE TALKING ABOUT THE TEA GROUPS”.
My friend and I have recently started to become very aware of the toxicity in a lot of these plant groups. I love plants. But some people are more collectors than hobbyists, and some of the collectors are so competitive...
I’ve gone to a store to get a plant from a new shipment only to be told by an employee that one person came in and bought the whole pallet. Related, I’ve seen costa farms baskets of Hoya or Cebu sold for astronomical prices because people will buy them all up from the local box stores so they can control the supply and demand. I’ve been in purges and seen one or two people snag almost every single plant, probably copying and pasting “sold” the moment a plant was posted...

Some times it really isn't the sellers fault either. Thank you for sharing the etiquette and does & don't 's

I don’t know, I don’t think it’s annoying or rude to ask if you can have a cutting. Everyone can ask me for it, in the end I decide if I’ll give it to them or not. It’s not rude to ask for something, it’s rude if you don’t accept a no.
My friends constantly ask me for cuttings and I either give it to them right away or I tell them they’ll have to wait because I want the plant to grow some more first. I would never feel obligated to give away anything. Same with strangers. Everyone can ask, they just need to accept a no. I don’t know, I heard this so often now and it really confuses me how politely asking for something could ever be considered rude. Maybe it’s a cultural thing.

Guilty of leaf collecting from the floor and shelves and under pots in trays... I always ask, at lowes and other places and have been told that they didnt mind at all. I will even buy a small pot to put the leaves in. With this said there is a difference between leaves that are not attached and people that will pluck leaves to get the propagation and even pull certain plants out of arrangements. People are ruthless now days. Common sense and basic courtesy are traits that are hard to find in a world where everyone feels like their wants and needs are priority over anything else. They SELL plants, that's how they make their money. You shouldn't take things without asking.
I used to work at a Home Depot and as an employee we weren't even allowed to take plants that didn't sell. I had to trash compactor some of them. My trainer told me if I was caught taking them I would get fired. You certainly shouldn't take products as a customer if employees can't even.

    • @l9878
      @l9878 4 ปีที่แล้ว

It depends on the plant. If someone admires my Swedish Ivy that grow like crazy and is easy to propagate, then it is no problem. But I have some rare plants that were expensive or hard to get. They grow slowly and are a challenge to propagate. Asking me to cut this plant that took a while to get where it is anyway, and me knowing that you probably will lose the cutting anyway, puts me in the position of saying 'No' and then it is awkward. I recently had a notary public come to my home (sent by the bank because I was refinancing) and she admired my plants. I gave her a cutting of a Tradescantia and that was no problem. But then she saw a philo that is rare and I had sent to me from Florida is that is a very slow grower. I said I did not want to cut it. Then she said, "just cut me a leaf from the bottom", which told me she had no idea how it would propagate anyway. If I want a cutting I simply as if the person sells cuttings. That gives them the option of saying 'no' or saying 'yes' or giving it to me for free.

I hate cutting my plants, even when they need to be cut and I feel really awkward when someone asks. This is so rude and people should not do it. Maybe ask, "Do you sell cuttings?". That way the plant owner can simply say 'no' or if they want to they can say, "Here let me cut this and give it to you" or say, "yes and I charge $X".

Plant Me Ashley oh man you are so lucky! My silly cats just love any plant they can sink their teeth into.

I have 2 cats and I trained them from the get go with a water spray bottle. When they get near any plant I spritz them. It might sound mean but it works and they don’t go near my plants anymore and I’d rather them get a little spray of water rather than get sick and die potentially

Great video. I really enjoyed it and the incredible amount of info you shared I am not a plant mom yet -- only have three baby ones -- and your information will be a big help.

Some of Reddit’s communities are pretty good. R/takeaplantleaveaplant is a good one for trading

I wanna know who the drama plant people are, because I’ve literally never seen anyone be nasty (not saying I don’t believe it)

Join some local plant groups on FB and you’ll find them eventually.
