I have the large Monstera and I am so happy about it. I got the cutting for free at a train stop. A woman was carrying the biggest monsters cuttings I have ever seen. I asked her where she got it from and she said from her sister, whom had it for many many years. She offered me one for free and I was sooo happy

The "Philodendron Selloum" is actually Thaumatophyllum Bipinnatifidum! Also commonly called Tree Philodendron and Split Leaf Philodendron, some times even referred to as some sort of Monstera.

My exact reason for a vote yes to the plant👍 Vertical crawl up instead of out also saves more space as well and could be a good “filler”

I actually have 3 of these plant, huh. Our local Chinese restaurant used to have large form deliciosa. It was over 3 m tall, growing on the wall. The restaurant didn't survive the pandemic so I don't know what happened to her... It was way too big to just put in a car, I hope they didn't just throw har away :( btw. I don't know what latin pronunciation would be, but if you're going with the original language (Polish) and botanist's last name "warscewiczi" would be pronounce as var-shae-vee-chee.

i also don’t understand why more people don’t have philodendron goeldii/thaumatophyllum spruceanum!!! i bought mine from a plant store and it was a rooted cutting that only had 3 lobes! it’s been about 8 months and it has grown 3 immature leaves and 2 mature leaves that have 8 and 9 lobes respectively!! it doesn’t need a moss pole in my experience, just a lot of light!! :) absolutely one of my faves. 💚💚

Made me laugh with the Monstera large form. Maybe because I'm old, and yes, everyone had one back then. I don't understand why they are so expensive, they're not rare at all!, just HUGE and difficult to handle. Only reason I don't have one is lack of room but they are one of my favourite plants 😍

There aren't a lot of people who can place a smile onto my face, but you have yet to fail... thanks for that. Your enthusiasm always shows in your conversations regarding plants, but when you are genuinely excited about one.... WOW!! You ask if any of these plants make the grade for me, and yes at least half. LOL However two in particular are going onto my "hunt-em-down" list: the Monstera Pinnatipartita (I do like compact) and the style of growth resembles a Vanda Orchid (a personal fave), and the Thaumatophyllum Spruceanum (I am intrigued with the spiral growth).
And while you didn't "discuss" it, you are getting full blame for turning me on to the Spiral Ginger... this one will be a must!
    Gracias de nuevo, Chica !!

I surprisingly have a bunch of these on your list! I will say, you are showing off the mature specimens of each which is definitely not that you're gonna see available for purchase. In Canada, all these fun philos are entering the market as very juvenile plants, which often times look like a hederaceum and most ppl just don't have the patience to wait for that ontogeny, so that's probably why these get looked over.

I randomly ran into a large form monstera deliciosa in a small plant shop in walking distance from my new apartment last year, for 40 euro. Hadn't seen one before and haven't seen one since, though apparently they're fairly common here in the netherlands/germany. I didn't technically have the money to buy it but here it is in my living room, thriving. Absolutely worth it, I spend so much time just kind of staring at it. It's just opened up it's first leaf with the beginnings of a 3rd row of fenestrations, which I am very excited about.

Linguist here! Philodendron /var-sheh-VEE-shee-ee/ :) It's named after the capital of Poland! But since we tend to use Latin naming conventions, that's probably where the emphasis would be.

A common thread going around all these thaumatophyllums (as well as E. skeleton key and Ph. warszewickzii) is that they are like Ph. lupinums and Ph. gigas - they take really long to reach mature form.

    • @notverynotoriousg5674
      @notverynotoriousg5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I can only speculate but I think the small version of lupinums that looks like a hederaceum is stunted, when people chop up immature philodendrons it creates stunted plants. if anyone has one i am curious as to if they get cataphylls.

i've had the e. sceleton key for half a year, still NO sign of the key shape. i've heard the same from others that have this one, and it don't like humidity, its a real pain in the butt

    • @horace6851
      @horace6851 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I have epipremnum skeleton key, it grows really fast but indeed matures slowly. The easiest way to get it to reach sizeable leaves before staking was to keep rounding the vine around the pot. It's not the height that leads to maturity it's development of aerial roots. It is starting to get key-shaped leaves after two rounds around the pot and they are still only one inch long, soon I will put it on a pole. Btw I did the same thing wit E white variegated, after one round around the pot the leaves are already double the size of the mother leaf from the cutting. It also worked for Cebu Blue. The only caveat is that the plant can't be rootbound, it will not mature if the roots are limited because you're adding more and more roots with every node. That's why using a moss pole there is no need to repot so often - the aerial roots develop inside the pole and total root system is actually pretty big even with a small pot.

  • @bragastraat2288

In its very mature form, the skeleton key does not look like anything close to its juvenile version. The leaf loses its tail. I wanted to buy one, but changed my mind when I saw the mature one

Philodendron fuzzy petiole is one of my cheap, not talked about, faves. I’m not talking about squamifarum. It looks like a gloriousum without the veins and it’s CHEAP online. $20 bucks on Etsy cheap. I never see it in big box stores. Question for people in the UK: how much does a large form Monstera deliciosa cost? Here in Southern California it's very common to find large-form Monstera deliciosa, grown from seed, at large family-run nurseries. Maybe $8 USD for a young plant if you find somewhere with good prices.

It's often takes several decades for the epithets of plant genera that have been reclassified by botanists to be widely adopted by horticulturists. Hobbyists are even more reluctant to adopt name changes for plants that they are accustomed to referring to by an earlier name. All of these former philodendrons now belong to the genus Thaumatophyllum but don't look for changes on the labels of plants in the florists' shops anytime soon:
    P. bipinnatifidum (formerly P. selloum)
    P. brasiliense
    P. goeldii
    P. speciosum
    P. undulatum
    P. xanadu (formerly P. 'Xanadu')

Józef Warszewicz discovered the philodendron Warszewiczii - he was a Polish botanist. And W I the Polish alphabet is pronounces as V, plus sz and cz are a specific souls that dont exist in English. So the proper pronunciation n is very very different that what most English speaking people would think

I find it very interesting that large form monsteras are the uncommon ones in the UK. I'm from Mexico City and they're everywhere (And I mean EVERYWHERE!). My girlfriend and I have this little game going on for the past two years where we spot monstera on the street, and a 20 minute car ride around the city always yields 7+ sightings. I'm almost sure that most of them are remnants from the 70's craze. People planted them outside and while they don't exactly thrive in our climate unless artificially watered, a lot of them survived. It's not uncommon to see absolutely massive ones fruiting. I have two of them and both are rescues found on the sidewalk as trash. Small form though, those are a bit harder to find. They're common in stores now, since they grow a lot faster and their popularity grew in recent years, but a couple of years ago I couldn't find one anywhere! I finally got one this year at one of our huge plant markets for about a pound (25 pesos).

.. Thank you Kaylee for yet another video.. Ohh, the Philodendron Subhastatum is definitely on my wishlist now ☘️🤗 Last year I bought a Philodendron Goeldii in my grosery store, and about 6 months later I gave it away to a neighbor, because I never understood the poor plant.. Now I often see the plant in garden centers, but it is not for mee..

This is the first of your videos where I absolutely love every plant on the list! The only ones I hadn't seen before are the Anthurium Arrow and Thaumatophyllum African Fantasy. The rest are already on my wishlist, and those two will be joining them! Loved this video, so glad to see these underrated plants get the love they deserve.

Wind back to just before the second covid lockdown. I went to my last class at college before the lockdown. I noticed that a really large and old monstera deliciosa had a stunted pup. It was growing in a staircase between floors and the pup came out on the wrong side so I suspected it was not getting sunlight.
I went straight to the dean (principal? Sorry not my native language) in the office like "Sorry, I've got a question, can I get the pup from the monstera deliciosa?" And he was like "The what from the what?" LOL
    He agreed.
I snapped it off. The weather was really bad that day, it was windy, frozen rain, really cold. I had a plant in a wet hankie in a repurposed sandwich bag. It had 2 leaves, one yellowed and fell off. The other leaf was half crispy. I had two nodes but the one on the bottom began to rot.
I now have 5 new leaves. The original half-crispy leaf fell off after a year. It's a real show stopper.

I have that Anthurium Arrow! I thought it was called Anthurium Black Corong? It was so unusual & rare that I found only one stock from a garden center compared to the PhilodendronGoeldii and Subhastatum that had like a shelf full of other stocks… its super sturdy and leatherlike, It’s one of my favorites!

Omg yeah I’ve added like 5 or 6 of these to my already big list 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 one that I’ve seen and fallen in love that’s not on this list is a plain green piper. Like a nice deep green sort of like the pepper piper (the one that pepper cokes from) but I think it’s not that form. I’ve only ever seen one so far where I am and I’m hoping it’s still there in two days coz I’m regretting not getting it when I saw it 😂😂😂 so I’m going back for it. I don’t fancy the colourful pipers at all lol so this was the first ever solid green one I’ve seen and I’m smitten lol

as someone who has a lot of big plants, i want a large form but i don't think i will ever have the space lol.
I have currently a monstera small form, a red cardinal, a xanadu, a white bird of paradise, a fiddle leaf fig, and a ficus juniper... I'm amazed the last 2 are doing well because they always seem to be the first to die with most people lol, my fiddle leaf has only ever lost 3 leaves and has already replaced them, that said they aren't a plant i recommend for anyone XD, it's so picky about watering!

I own a skeleton key baby and it's pretty similar to a regular pinnatum. Two leaves are even silver and look very similar to a philodendron silver sword. It grows pretty fast and I love it and I'm looking forward to the days it matures. It's awkward but I love that.
