I’m 66 and still a 7 hdcp but needed some more punch. The cobra irons have made a huge difference in my game. I can now pull an 8 iron from 150 yds. With my ZX7 irons I needed a 6 iron.
I'm a Mizuno and Cobra fan. Kind of surprised the JPX 923 hot metal isn't listed. The Ping irons I know are good but I've never liked the cut out near the hozel. The Srixon irons, I've never hit, but looked the best of the lot!
You forget about us older golfers!! Take myself, 79 years old and still play once a week here in Florida. With lower back issues my best golf is long gone! I’ve just ordered the Wilson’s was chuffed they were no 1. Got fitted for them as I hit them the best! Excellent launch as they say! Just got back into golf after 10 years not playing! Found this channel last month! Cheers for the content!
I went from taylormade M2 irons to ping 425 and for me i agree that the taylor made irons were a bit longer but not by much maybe 3 or 4 yards but the dispersion pattern on trackman favored the pings by a huge margin and to me the pings had a much better feel. I am a senior golfer and the pro told me NOT to purchase the 5 iron so i have ping irons PW thru 6 iron and then 3 and 4 ping utilities. I added a ping 7 wood which I absolutely love.. Previous to the pings I had A fulltaylor made set with 3-4 and 5 utility clubs. I find the ping utility clubs much easier to hit Loved the 425 irons and ping 7,5, and 3 wood. I will get on trackman and see if that is as forgiving as the 430 driver. the G430 drive and 425 7 wood and are my favorite clubs. this sand tip was badly needed and looks to be a winner. I have hit the callaway and taylormade irons but not the cobras. I sticking with the pings. Ping did say they wanted forgiveness over distance in the G430 driver. On the course, For me it gave me both, Definitely more center /sweetspots hits with the driver which may make me think I am getting more distance. Chet Moore chesapeake va.
I got fitted for Ping G430 irons and they have worked out great. I gain consistent yardage making life easier and mishits still give me something to work with. I don’t mind that other clubs might go further, I know my yardages and get up and down. This coupled with your coaching videos are making me a much better player.
My first 2 package sets in the 90s were Wilson 1200s, then fat shafts. They used to be premium gear, then lost their way by going into the "Argos" package set market. The D7 forged and recent D9 were both fantastic irons. Whilst they continue to make package sets, anything marked "Wilson Staff" is as good as Ping or TaylorMade. The downside is they won't hold their 2nd hand value as well as the big 4 makers. But, pair these Dynapower with the matching Driver, and you're on the course with a premium set of clubs for just over a grand. Just add your existing putter....
I have the Wilson V6 tours and the CB Staff....I play off 13 and they're so easy to hit... .They're not long but you can stop the ball easy with the height 👍
Wilson hands down is the winner. I hit them and was in shock at how great they were. And for those people saying that you can’t work the ball with them. It’s complete rubbish. Anybody can hit fade or a draw with anything.
Where’s Mizuno? The JPX923’s are forgiving, launch great and look fantastic. All this with a very nice feel. I agree with your comments on the pings as well. The G425 looked much better.what I would add is that this category is real tight.
It aggravates me to no end when everyone talks about what style iron you should use based on handicap! It makes no sense for many different reasons. Firstly just because your handicap is above 10 doesn't mean you struggle with your irons. Next reason being, your handicap doesnt mean you are a high or low spin/launch player. Finally, you can have a double digit handicap and have a shallow/sweeper strike which is terrible for this style of iron, because of the wide soles they all have. Don't let anyone tell you just because your not a scratch golfer that you need to use this style of iron unless it is a good fitter. I wasted years playing this style of iron because I thought I wasn't good enough to play "player's" irons. I finally got fit into a much smaller, more traditional style head, with a much thinner sole. I have went from a 16 handicap to a 10 in less than a year. If I can finally get better at putting I will finally drop into the single digits!
You've hit the nail on the head. Same thing happened to me. I've always struggled with putting and my short game, yet I'm long and accurate with my driver, woods and irons.
@@jadamane Usually a thinner sole is better for sweepers. I am also a sweeper. Before I did a bunch of research and talked with a few fitters, I had always used thicker soled, "more forgiving" game improvement style irons. It always seemed like they didn't feel very good even when I struck them pure. I found out after years of hitting that style iron it was because the sole design was too thick for me, a sweeper to ever really have good turf interaction. I switched to much thinner soled "player" style irons and now the sound, feel, and performance of my irons has become night to day better! You don't need blades or even player cavity irons. Their are plenty of player distance irons with the best of both worlds. Beautiful looks, and feels but also lots of distance and forgiveness on less than perfect strikes. Most importantly most of them don't have super thick soles and tons of offset like the irons I wasted years hitting. Some examples for player distance irons are Callaway Apex, Taylormade P790, Srixon ZX5, Mizuno 225. All are great.
I recently went for a club fitting and was open to any make or model. Of all the different makes I tried I found the Wilson was the iron I could not hit for love or money. They have had great reviews but obviously not for me. Callaway we’re out of my price bracket especially in todays financial climate. Finally settled on the older Taylormade stealth model from last year and not the chunk monkey ones you mentioned.
I just did the same thing. Just got fitted for a whole new set (sans wedges and putter). I wound up with the Stealth Irons and the Srixon woods. The irony is that I have always hit Taylor Made woods, but the Stealth Drivers just had too much spin. I have played a couple of times with them and I really like the irons. I am hitting them straight and long. At least 10 yards longer per club.
Looks to me is 2nd, as long as they work for me I'll use them, I have Cobra Air-x irons. They ain't the prettiest thing but they work well for me and the price was great for just starting golf last December
I currently have wilson D7 and they are great forgiving and fairly long.I will upgrade in the next year and the dynapower Are high on the list only issue I have with the d7 irons is the power bars have come away or fallen out on the sole of some of the clubs I use most and to be fair after 4 years wilson still looked to replace the heads free of charge but couldn’t find any new replacements.
I recently purchased Ping G430 irons. I picked up 10+ yards with every club plus I’m hitting the ball higher and straighter. If Ping wanted a real person for and advertisement I would do it. I had been playing to 18 handicap, depending on the course to now a 12-13. Not kidding.
Watched this video 4 or 5 months ago and had to come back and revisit it. Saw your comment and I've had the same experience. I've now had 3 rounds with my G430's and oh my gosh. Ive never hit an iron this good and/or consistently straight. I've picked up some yardage but the big thing is the feel and consistency. I have a decent fundamentally correct swing for 58 yrs old so i can hit any iron decent alot of the time but i hit these good every time. Not sure what it is about them and don't care. They are perfect for me.
Looking for a set of gi’s and getting fitted on april 1. So far I’m torn between srixon and the mizuno. Just wondering where the mizuno fell on this list. Thanks
I have a set of D9's and Dynapowers. Explosive Distance and High Launch with the correct shaft combination. Wilson golf clubs are a great value for the buck. Try a set and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Where’s the Mizuno JPX 923? I did try most of these plus others in a recent fitting but the JPX came out best for me, shocked it’s not even on the list.
I think it depends on the player, i dont struggle for distance, while im a 20 handicapper its consistency that matters for me. Doesnt matter how far a good shot goes if you shank 20+ %!! Thinking of the Pings.
I got titleist ap-1 set . My wife and pops worked together and got me that set of irons plus driver and 3 wood sim 2 max edition For Chris add this year . They got the iron set for 150 . Wife also got my 52 vokey . They are slightly used but I don’t care . I went from shooting mid 90s to now close to breaking 80 almost every round . My problem is my damn putting game … I used to be a scooper but now I stand over ball and turn hips just right and can hit 8 iron 160 yards . Aiming to get them to 180 soon . I don’t play as much as I like . I wish I could win the lottery and play golf every day but alas being an adult . I will say ball striking with my titleist compared to my older callaway 2.0 irons is a lot better and I feel way more confident . Sim 2 max driver and 3 wood are working great for me. Vibrant 300 drives and my fairway wood is either shank or pure it 260 😂. I kept my Jon daily oversized 5 wood I bought from Walmart . I can’t get rid of it . I need a 200-245 shot that’s my go to
The cumbersome look of long irons, and hard or easy to launch in long irons really doesn’t affect us senior 20 handicaper’s much as our highest iron is 6 and after that it’s hybrids. Myself my highest iron is a 7 and I use my 5H as a 5-6 easy to hit and easy to take some distance off of by chocking down
Taylormade irons to me have always lacked looks. And I agree w/ Black Heart -Wilson clubs, quality and looks combined. Everytime the list comes out it's always the same brands. And the only Japanese brands are always Mizuno and Srixon mainly Mizuno. Why no comparisons with all the other Japanese manufacturers? They are pricey yes but they do make G.I. and S.G.I. irons.
I have the Srixon ZX4 prior version. It has a little wider sole than the Mk II but is extremely forgiving especially when I hit it a little full. Great distance and feel off the face. If you need some help in your game I found the ZX4's to be a great club.
I used wilson Di irons years ago. Then took a break (kids etc) First irons I wanted when getting back to it. Wilson d7 - super irons at a great price. Wilson are making great irons these days.
I’m 68 not going to grow into any irons been growing out of them for 30 years Steel shaft blades (Lynx USA) To Steel shaft players irons (Ping I 500) to graphite shaft GI irons haven’t found best fit yet in these liked the Srixon Zx 4 but hated the UST DART shaft’s high short left balloning ball flight. So I’m looking again 😮
Back in my university days, I learned, in British history, about Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill who developed a philosophy of Utilitarianism: that is, that and object or a process should be valued by its innate utility first and, by that idea, last year I bought a set of Wilson LP 2 irons. Yes, they look like hybrids, fat sole, and a non traditional shape. BUT, they work well for me and I have had excellent results from them. I still have a set of Wilson Gooseneck irons circa late -'70s or early -80s which I used to use before age (73) and its corresponding decline in athleticism caught up with me and I've always enjoyed Wilson clubs. Functionality and utility are my first considerations and looks are second. The Srixons and the Callaways are lovely looking irons, but the LP 2s work for me. If I thought I could work with the seductive looking Srixons, I'd probably buy them in a heartbeat but I think I'll stick with what works for me. They may be unusual in appearance but the LP 2 is one iron I would place on that list.
@@sethmeinertz1034 Being 73, I tested the graphite shaft in both senior and regular at the local PGA Superstore as the graphite is lighter to swing and transmits less shock on mishits than the steel. The senior was a bit soft but the regular was just right and I got the 6 - PW set and then purchased a matching 5 iron. If you're contemplating buying a set, I would suggest you hit a demo club or 2 just to gauge the feel of the shaft and, maybe, check the similar Cleveland offerings, too, just as a comparison. Again, the LP 2s worked for me and they will be my gamers for the foreseeable future. Try hitting a demo and see what you think.
Golfing over 25 years, Wilson Staff make as good a set of irons out any one, keep the show pony brands, I’ve tried them all, one thing they can’t make though is drivers and woods etc, so keep the money you save on a show pony iron and get Wilson staff irons from a D9 or Dyno to a CB or blade, and invest the money you save and put it on a great driver and wood, then thank me later. Best advice I ever got.
I got fitted once about 6 months agk, srixon won. I just went and demod them for another testing to verify the shaft. I am doing a mixed bag. I ordered my zx4 mk2 4 iron yesterday with a recoil f3, medium grips. (That shaft really works for me) i know I will be doing sone zx5's and maybe even some zx7's, but not sure where to transition. Once I know how far I am getting out with the 4 iron I will know what to do with my 5 iron and where to start the zx5's. If I do the zx7's it will probably be 8-A or 9-A. Gotta get the zx5 7 iron first. Csn't wait, but the trigger was pulled. Now... once that's done I will need to decide on that clevelan 3+ Hywood OR a utility iron (probably that mizuno you tested). I'm about 2 months away from figuring out which one of those is kicking out my hybrid. I appreciate your content znd love your channel. Building a great community. Best
Purchased the 430’s about 3 weeks ago. Purely because I’m wanting forgiveness through the bag. Agreed they won’t win sexiest golf design and they don’t have the bag appeal but golf is hard enough. What do majority of golfers of all levels want, consistency. Ping is all about that. So at this stage I’m enjoying the honeymoon period.
same here. loved the performance not so much the looks of it. but i have to say they grew on me and now i almost think they are “pretty” .. and how they look in the bag not a lot of people can see. a flight is maximum 4 players 😜
@@NathanSmith-xf7rk you absolutely will! i’ve sold my i500 and went with the G430 coz of the G425 that a friend o mine play. makes that hard sport just a lil easier
Thank god the takomo didn't make the top 5 these irons have received more reviews than top gun maverick in life you get what you pay for well done Wilson for breaking the trend
@@JiKimbo Brilliant clubs. I have a set of MX-20's and my son has a set of MX-23's. Absolutely brilliant design, looks (in my opinion, the best looking irons ever) and feel. the MX-23's are just so forgiving.
If this list is only new irons for 2023, then yes but the Cleveland launcher halo is quite something. The one thing is disagree with you on is the Taylor made irons aren’t “training wheels” where you want them gone as soon as you can. I think if that average golfer is hitting them well, it would be ridiculous and a poor decision to go to a harder to strike (but looks more mainstream) iron.
I have Stealth HD 5 and 6 iron. They are weird. When you hit near the center they fly long, high, and straight. If you hit near the toe or the heel they go straight, but absolutely no distance. I hit the 6 iron around 175. If I miss hit I'm lucky to get 75
It's crap. First irons I bought after 10 years off golf thinking it's the newest greatest tech today. Couldn't hit anything right and the feel was weird. Up for sale, get fitted and given Mizuno 225 which is superb and actually more forgiving. Then I got the 245 after only 2 weeks so I got both. The 245 is no 2 best performing. No 1 Epon EF02i.
i’m 60 s d have had a shoulder injury 2 years ago which required surgery. I was never a long hitter. But now i’m kinda screwed. I had a really nice set of clubs stolen from a storage space before my injury. So my 4 scotty cameron putters and vokey wedges are gone. This is where i am. know i can’t do my steel shaft Titleist clubs again. I have to be realistic. My shoulders will never be great again. But i want to play. so here i am. i’m sure there are many players who eschew game improvement irons. i tried every club in this review out and the taylor made stealth he were the best for me. i understand why you don’t like the way they look, but hey work for me, and i don’t want Wilson.
Length in irons does not matter, as long as you know that you consistently hit a specific iron a specific distance. I hit my Ping G25 7 Iron 165 yards but my newer Cobra Radspeed 7 Iron 180 yards, consistently. You need to pick the correct iron for the distance required.
Personally I don’t think I’d grow out of the Taylor mades if I golfed once a week then I could see it but for someone who goes once a month I’ll be fine with ugly irons that keep me close to the fairway.
Make the game as simple as possible. Most people would play better with forgiving irons. The idea you can shoot low scores with irons that pros use without having their incredible talent is fantasy.
Thanks for the video. I don't know what the criteria the NCG used to decide the top 5 most forgiving irons. So with respect, it does not really matter hoot. At the end of the day performance is king and aesthetics is queen for game improvement irons. Most of the clubs have different lofts, so this will have a huge impact on the distance they travel, spin rate, launch angle etc. For me the best clubs are probably not even listed i.e. Mizuno Hot Metal clubs - they look great, sound good and perform as well as any of the clubs in this video. Just saying.
*what do you think about this list? ANY IRONS YOU WOULD PLACE IN THERE*

Lol I don't understand why you would rule out a club just based on the look. If I could hit a 7 broom stick 230 yards I would have a bag full of them.
I agree, the old “how does it look” is a hilarious question. I always ask, would you rather look in the woods or on the fairway

Just bought the D9s. Great value
Looking for a set of gi’s and getting fitted on april 1. So far I’m torn between srixon and the mizuno. Just wondering where the mizuno fell on this list. Thanks
Love the Cobra LTDx. I have One Length AND regular sets. Love them and cannot wait to put them on my Aerotech i80 stiff shafts.
I have a set of D9's and Dynapowers. Explosive Distance and High Launch with the correct shaft combination. Wilson golf clubs are a great value for the buck. Try a set and you will be pleasantly surprised.
Can you tell a real difference between the two?
Where’s the Mizuno JPX 923? I did try most of these plus others in a recent fitting but the JPX came out best for me, shocked it’s not even on the list.
Forgiveness more important than extra distance. Can always reach for another club if distance is needed.
Wilson are on to a strong year….. but tbf their irons have always been class
I need a 200-245 shot that’s my go to
The looks I care about most are the numbers on my scorecard. Club looks are a distant second.
The cumbersome look of long irons, and hard or easy to launch in long irons really doesn’t affect us senior 20 handicaper’s much as our highest iron is 6 and after that it’s hybrids. Myself my highest iron is a 7 and I use my 5H as a 5-6 easy to hit and easy to take some distance off of by chocking down
I play Callaway Mavrik irons. Not on the new list but very forgiving. Surprised Paradym didn’t make it. Go Wilson!
I hear a lot about Takoma irons. Does anyone have any experience with these?
What about the Mizuno JPX 923 Hot Metal?
I used wilson Di irons years ago.
Then took a break (kids etc)
First irons I wanted when getting back to it.
HELLO Diogenes I was wondering what kind of shaft you use. KBS steel ultralight 80 or Graphite shaft regular?
I’ve been using sirxon z star irons. Love them
Not heard of those
Golfing over 25 years, Wilson Staff make as good a set of irons out any one, keep the show pony brands, I’ve tried them all, one thing they can’t make though is drivers and woods etc, so keep the money you save on a show pony iron and get Wilson staff irons from a D9 or Dyno to a CB or blade, and invest the money you save and put it on a great driver and wood, then thank me later.
Best
I love the look of ping. But then I have always thought blades look boring.
I just got a set of g425’s, and I am going to love them so much, can’t wait for spring
I wonder how any of them would compare to the old Mizuno MX-23's?
Were they good?
@@JiKimbo Brilliant clubs. I have a set of MX-20's and my son has a set of MX-23's. Absolutely brilliant design, looks (in my opinion, the best looking irons ever) and feel. the MX-23's are just so forgiving.
Agree with you if your looking for forgiveness and distance who cares about workablity
Mizuno 923 hot metal!
It’s good to see the best was one of the cheapest, Mizuno not even in the top 6 they won’t be happy 😁.
i play the srixon ZX5 and it´s the best ironset i tried
If this list is only new irons for 2023, then yes but the Cleveland launcher halo is quite something.
The one thing is disagree with you on is the Taylor made irons aren’t “training wheels” where you want them gone as soon as you can. I think if that average golfer is hitting them well, it would be ridiculous and a poor decision to go to a harder to strike (but looks more mainstream) iron.
"Distance by design" (jacked lofts) haha
Nothing beats Callaway Mavriks - nothing!
Where does Titleist T350 fit in
The AeroJet looks like the TaylorMade M4 irons.
i’m 60 s d have had a shoulder injury 2 years ago which required surgery.
No JPX 923? I'm more shocked with that 😳
Save your money and buy some preowned at a fraction of the price. Know your spec, then buy what’s best for you. New clubs ridiculous price.
The older you buy the weaker the lofts and this makes them very easy to hit
Don't sleep on the Tour Edge C723 irons. Better than all of them!
Eleven hybrid Irons... incredible clubs!
How can you say the taylormades look bad when the paradyms are also basically a hybrid. the back of them is 100% flat...
What's best for the average golfer that is probably about a 15 handicap?
85% of the worlds golfers are over 18 handicap, so if you are under that, you're in the top 15% in the world.
2023 Great Big Bertha titanium irond
My game is not good enough to require workability in my irons. I just want to hit them solid and straight so they go where I am aiming.
I would much rather play my 2021 Apex DCB irons over any of these five selections!
I agree with #1. Otherwise, they are all good, ugly or not. After all, it's not how, it's how many strokes.
Ditto on JPX 923 Hotmetal being absent from top 6? 🤷🏻
Tour Edge E722 is the best value game improvement irons on the market…
I wouldn’t have any idea which are better, but here’s an engagement comment! 😂
The Aerojet Irons look like Taylormade M2 irons from 2019.
And now the new “Titliest T350”.
They may just be the overall best.
I think I'll go get the Wilsons
I prefer consistency over length
Bottom line. Which club holds the green the best. Best spin. You want your ball to stop as quickly as possible on the green.
Length in irons does not matter, as long as you know that you consistently hit a specific iron a specific distance. I hit my Ping G25 7 Iron 165 yards but my newer Cobra Radspeed 7 Iron 180 yards, consistently. You need to pick the correct iron for the distance required.
That's because the ping was a 32° loft and the radspeed was 27°
in a list of forgiving irons , you cannot put irons in on looks alone! That would be in your list of best looking irons! ,
Personally I don’t think I’d grow out of the Taylor mades if I golfed once a week then I could see it but for someone who goes once a month I’ll be fine with ugly irons that keep me close to the fairway.
What about Cleveland launcher line?
Tour Edge Hot Launch, very forgiving irons with only half the price. Buy these, use the money that's leftover for lessons.
Mizuno JPX 923 HOTMETAL
I'd put my Cleveland Launcher Xl irons up against any of these for forgiveness, and their feel would beat all of them.
Surprised Mizuno 923 aren’t in the top 5
gonna have to roll these back. at least the long irons if pros are using them. haha
I’m not good enough to know the real difference in the clubs. I just bought some Taylormades and expect to use them for 10 years.
Mizuno HL ?
I think that was the over seventies list.
Don’t care what they look like, give me the Stealth HD
No Mizumo 923 HM? Strongly disagree
