7:13 - I know it's an old video, but there is no such rule in CATAN. You don't have to trade 1:1 with other players, you can offer 1 card and get 3 back. The only restriction is that you can't give cards for free or trade matching cards (I.e. 2 wood for 1 wood - in order to make your hand smaller).

Another great and fair analysis of Catan while giving it the love that it deserves. Entertaining video. Haven’t played Catan in a few years, but my favorite expansion is Seafarers. Really enjoyed it despite the set up. I haven’t given Explorers and Pirates a try yet.

I think Catan is still a pretty solid gateway game honestly. There are definitely games out there now that probably do its job a bit better, but you can't go wrong starting someone with Catan. Thanks for watching! :)

I think part of what you dislike about Catan is not about input vs. output randomness, but the issue of variance. At the points where you say that it's 'badly designed', this might also help you clarify what exactly the design feature is that you object to and then make a separate argument for why that's bad. You mention that there are other games that do what Catan does better, but you don't actually give examples and explain what you mean, I think this would also be helpful.

We last spoke on your India video, we basically came to the same conclusion as you, after like 10 games I was like “I have no idea if I like this or not”, after 20 plays me and the missus love it. I think the breakthrough with India is when you finally get a game that you haven’t been absolutely locked down to the point of pure rage and you manage to get 3-4 mandalas, then your like “this is sick” - it has to be said though our base game is Europe and we are using the Trainstations from that to help alleviate some of the rage caused by completely ruining someone’s entire game plan in like 2 moves. As for Switzerland, fuck Switzerland.
