I think part of what you dislike about Catan is not about input vs. output randomness, but the issue of variance. At the points where you say that it's 'badly designed', this might also help you clarify what exactly the design feature is that you object to and then make a separate argument for why that's bad. You mention that there are other games that do what Catan does better, but you don't actually give examples and explain what you mean, I think this would also be helpful.

Maybe I'm just too new to Cosmic Encounter, having only played 20 or so games, but god I DESPISE the Shadow. Only alien that's legit banned at my table. I played one game with the Shadow and it took literally 4 hours. And we didn't even finish that game. After 4 hours everyone was just so exhausted that we called it a draw and left. Any time someone got close to winning Shadow killed their colonies. Everyone had to put 2-3 ships on every colony, so nobody had any ships to actually play the game. People would legit skip turns because they couldn't attack someone without abandoning their colonies to the mercy of the Shadow. It became a never-ending purgatory of suffering. Love the video, great editing, but my hatred for the Shadow cannot be overstated.

A buff to the third workshop is critical for the cats, otherwise it might as well not exist. In our group if you have 3 workshops you get 2 battles in one action, working simmilarly to march (2 moves). Its also thematic beeing workshops weapon builders.

Lol at the Discord chat screenshot. I know the user that said DI isn't necessary, he's always defending Root and neglecting any house rules, for him the game is a absolutely perfect, nothing is imbalanced.

this was a great series! Loved it and I agree with basically all your placements as my top 5 are: Amoeba, Warpish, Fido, Masochist, Tick Tock. I fully agree with your "hot take" that pulling out all ships with Amoeba or just putting in like 6 is so fun

Someone compiled the win rate for all factions during professional tournaments and interestingly enough the Vagabond actually comes out as slightly below average. They have a win rate of 21%,, which puts them below the rats, WA, moles, eyrie and cats and above the otters, corvid, badgers and lizards.

My biggest issue with the Marquise is that, like you pointed out, Hawks for Hire is absolutely REQUIRED to keep up with the table… and yet countless games I’ve drawn only one or even zero bird cards and I feel like it’s just impossible to compete at that point.

Once you get into the WA mindset, they’re such an easy faction to play. To the point that it surprises me that WA was listed as a high complexity faction. I love playing them though

Man, this is the first thing that I saw sitting down to eat, literally right after getting my first Marquise win with the Arbiter nipping at my heels with 28vp. Insane coincidence- and that was the most stressful late game I've ever had! Needed to forest him all on my own because crows & eyrie both refused to help me, but he barely missed the win & let me build in the clearing he'd destroying. I like cats, but I'm sure glad I won't feel obligated to play them every time they pop up in AdSet anymore, they are definitely the dullest militant.

You forgot to mention something very important which is that Marquise is a woman. Which should put cats at #1. That aside loved the video and cant wait for #7!!!! Also loved the Riv cameo a star in the making!
