Great tutorial, thanks! If anyone else is having trouble cutting out holes with boolean because the outside mesh disappears, try switching the solver from "exact" to "fast". It ended up working for me.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video! After a happy mistake, I figured out how to make an even cleaner outline. After applying the displace modifier to the plane, then create a second plane. Use the Boolean modifier on the second plane and choose the first displaced outline as the object with the eye dropper. Make sure the second plane is close to but not touching the base (the part near the flat area). Apply the Boolean modifier. Now you have a super clean outline. Extrude that plane to create a 3D object. Let me know what you think!!
Tried this, doesn't seem like the boolean modifier is actually doing anything. I use the selector on the other plane, hit apply and try to extrude but all that happens is it extrudes the solid plane.
About a month ago I needed to find this out and found your old video. I needed it again and I find you've made a new one, thank you very much for the great tutorial
This is a great tutorial. I am brand new to Blender and have been able to create a custom stamp for my pottery projects. The additional information about the boolean modifier is going to be a lifesaver. I have to watch this at 0.5 playback speed and take notes, but it works. Thank you so much.
When blender changed it's basic user interface (I learned on 2.0+) I gave up modeling because it felt like I had to learn everything all over again with the new UI. Well I got a 3D printer, which brought me back to blender. I plan to make 3D Printed garden pieces so I can cast them out of materials like Concrete, Plaster, Clay etc. This tutorial helped significantly for an idea that I have been wanting to make, thank you so much for taking the time to put this together. I feel like I can learn the new UI of blender now. Here's a cool note, this tutorial is helping me 3D Print some bricks that will be casted in Concrete, your knowledge will be on this earth as long as those bricks stay in place.
If you delete everything (Cube, light and camera) then to go file > defaults > save startup file then you dont have to delete it everything every time you open Blender
every time i boolean for cuts, even if i use fast or exact solver, it creates NEW EDGES for some reason??? and these new edges REFUSE to be deleted no matter what, its so annoying
So I can't seem to unsubdivide without filling the shape first but I can't fill in part of the shape without unsubdivide the edge because the edge is too complex to fill inand it crashes it. What do I do😭
You can just press CTRL+G and select coplanar on the top, invert selection with CTRL I and delete. You don't need to select all the vertices. And for the edge, you just need to click the edge press ctrl g and select amount of faces around an edge.
Seems like you started going really fast at the end...also I think some of th keys changes. well at least for me L was Cntr - l. Also trying to use a boolean cut failed...not sure why but it could not preform it. At least for me this was very fast
my dude, no one has ever responded to one of my comments so fast. thank you. lifesaver, you will be a top contender for best blender support channel in the future. @@realfaker
I’m trying to use your technique on my logo but I have holes I don’t want to fill and I don’t know how to fill only some parts and leaving the holes untouched. Could you help me?
I ran into two problems: 1- Un-subdivide does nothing, no matter the number of iterations 2- When cutting holes, the boolean operation only produces an edge within the original object. Deleting the smaller object doesn't remove the polygons and there is no hole. I have to export the mesh and remove faces manually in other software (I'm new to Blender). Thanks for the tutorial
Mine looks a lil wierd meaning in the image goes in instead of going out like urs I heard u saying something about the white going out and black going in so does my image have to be black and white for it to work?
love the video bro thank you so much....bro how can i doo a simple stencil of and object of my choice you know like a human shape with a simple triangle count, every time a tray to do one its always like 570000 triangle/vertices 😔 for a simple stencil, that's super crazy....do you have aby videos about that????
i am sitting here for 5 hours trying to cut out a shitty hole- a quarter hour later and i got it, i think the hole it was trying to cut out was to large or sth
It normally fails due to unfinished process or incorrect layout. When I first started it failed over and over again, but after googling I found it was caused by me, now I have no issues with it.
vectorize your image dude. Online tools do that in 1 click. Will save you all this useless time cleaning a dirty result you get from working with pixels.

everything but the boolean seems to work. Thank you!
Now the fill tool wont work?

You're a genius! Thank you
You could just add the image as a plane for the first step, instead of taking note of the dimensions right?
I think you're right, the addon preserve de original dimensions.
True that Yousuf, that's a better way

Can't thank you enough. Liked, subbed and shared
My pleasure 😄
Why don't you use autotrace (or some other tracer) then import the path and extrude it
How do i make the black go up?
You can do it by reversing the Displace strength value to minus value
Can't find texture editor

Hey I’m stuck in the part where you said “press l and press f to fill” I’m using the same logo so idk where I lagged
When I tried to fill the mesh it has gaps and connects verticies that shouldn't how do i fix that
Does it work with Png that has no background

It is really weird that this channel it not getting tones of views per video already

cool tricks, but i think turning the logo into svg and then in blender importing it and turning it into a mesh is faster

The Unsubdivide issues people are having is likely to be caused by not clicking "Apply" on the smooth modifier
nope it's applied alright, the unsubdivide just doesn't work for some reason (prob topology)
It normally fails due to unfinished process or incorrect layout. When I first started it failed over and over again, but after googling I found it was caused by me, now I have no issues with it.
realy good!
Nice

yeah thats a cool tutorial and all but the smoothing ruins it, makes it too smooth and its not pretty
