The Byrna less than lethal handgun has been on the market for several years. The Byrna fires a variety of different less than lethal projectiles ranging from hard plastic balls to pepper ball or balls mixed with pepper and CS gas. We test all of these different types of balls to see how effective they are in stopping a would be attacker.
Pepper spray, oleoresin capsicum spray, OC spray, capsaicin spray, or capsicum spray.

Correction: the CO2 cartridge is not punctured upon loading it, it is only punctured when the first trigger pull happens, this allows you to store it loaded for a longer period of time.

You can use a lampshade to defend yourself but not a baton because it's an item "designed for harm". Let's ignore the fact that a lampshade's base can shatter and cause much more injury than anything else, and is useless!

    • @JamesFallonUK
      @JamesFallonUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

@@mehtevas2653 Yes you can, but you cannot proactively arm yourself, you are therefore left to use whatever happens to be to hand at the time and even then the police will demand a reasonable excuse as to why the thing you used was to hand. So for instance, you couldn't keep a crowbar next to the front door because that would be seen as preparing to use it for offensive purposes.
Under UK law we are victims by default. The only people who are carrying weapons are the criminals, since they don't care about the laws stopping everyone else from being armed.
Sadly there is little appetite in the UK to allow civilians to take proactive self defence measures. If I could afford it, I'd move to the U.S in a heartbeat.

Less than lethal, no matter the product, is just that - less than lethal. If you're in a fight for your life I'm going with a handgun, personally.

@@Militaryarmschannel a large can of Counter Assault or Udap bear spray is a lot less expensive than this thing and requires no consumables. The effective distance is about the same as you were shooting at (~10-30ft) and it definitely works. Getting hit with that stuff is no joke. It hurts and it makes you miserable like you see in videos of cops and soldiers getting CS gassed or pepper sprayed. You can get smaller cans as well that would fit in a purse or pocket. For the price I found googling around, I could buy 5 or 6 cans of bear spray for the price of one of these things. Also, some states would classify this as a firearm because it uses compressed gas, which could mean licensing requirements to carry it.
With pepper spray or bear spray, you can get your attacker with it enough to make your escape and then dump the can if you don't want police to immediately know you had it. It offers a nice bit of deniability should you not feel like being harassed just for defending yourself. At $50/large can, throwing it out isn't that bad. $300+ for this thing is just silly. I can buy an actual firearm for that money.

Yep I know, that's infuriating. I sent Taurus my Model 85 that broke NIB after 50 rounds in early 2017 or 2018. They kept that gun for 8 MONTHS dicking me around! *8 MONTHS!!!* It was promised 6 weeks turnaround. At the 6 week mark I called and they had no update. At the 2 month mark they again had nothing except to tell me that they only get parts deliveries on a monthly basis on the 1st of each month off a boat from Brazil. At their suggestion, I called on the 3rd or 4th of every month after that for 4 months straight and each time I got a "Nope, we did not receive a Model 85 cylinder and hand this time on this shipment, check back next month." On month 6 after hearing that, I demanded a brand new gun. I said "You know, you guys say you have no spare cylinders or hands, but I know where you can get me one that WAS on that boat...a new gun. This is ridiculous." The lady agreed and submitted a serial swap request. I asked how they'd pay the FFL fee and she said "Oh no, we don't cover that. You're already getting a brand new gun." 🤣 The gun I sent in WAS brand new and broken! Now I gotta pay a transfer fee just to use the warranty? 🙄 Luckily I found a $10 transfer home based FFL and gave them his license info. Imagine if all I had available were these $40 and $50 transfer shops... $50 to get a replacement $250 gun that broke right away out of the box. Ridiculous. Anyway, they said in 2 weeks they'd have it processed and they'd ship the gun out. 2 weeks came and went. Then another 2 weeks. Nothing. I called early on that 7th month and asked wtf the issue was now. They said they never got the license info email. Told my FFL to send it again. 2 weeks later, nothing. Another 2 weeks, nothing. I was a couple days away from calling Taurus to roll heads on the 8th month when my FFL called and said the gun just showed up. So, I made the 45 minute drive across town to get it and the 45 minute drive back home. I literally put another 50 rounds into that new gun to verify that that one wasn't broken too and then sold that damn thing right away without shooting it any further. 🤣 Never. Ever. Buying. Taurus. Again.

Worked the first time I released the CO2 cartridge gas into it. Next time I needed it a couple months later. The pellets came out slower than spit wads. I wouldn't rely on it to store the CO2 gas for long term based on that experience.

To be fair, in most self defense encounters, your attacker
is not going to be wearing protective face or chest protection.
Therefore, the Byrna is going to be way more effective
than shown in this demonstration video.
If the Byrna is treated and thought of more like
a can of mace (but on steroids) and not a firearm,
    and used within it's limitations...
It has the potential to be vey effective (with good shot placement)
    in a self defense encounter.
Nothing is a 100 percent in a self defense situation.
Not even a firearm, if not used within it's strength
weaknesses and proper training. Whatever you use in a self defense situation,
fight as though your life depends on it!
    (Because it just might)

Thanks Pad, you're a champ! I wonder if the chemical rounds would be more effective if you were to fire it at a person in a more real world scenario, like if an attacker was running up to you. The attacker would be breathing heavier and thus inhale the chemicals deeper through the mouth or nose. I would imagine that Pad might have held his breath waiting for the shot .. just wondering if you would be willing to try it without a mask and breathing it in deeper!

It would be interesting to see if you could run the specialty rounds through a paintball marker. I’m just imagining dumping 12 balls/sec with a electronic trigger into an agitator, I feel like that would be a deterrent. And with a paintball marker you would get a lot more shots out of a larger CO2 tank.
My thoughts on the irritant is you need a much larger dump of the chemical for it to be taken in by the person being shot. That’s why I think having one that dumps 20+ seems more effective. Also when using air powered means you can have select fire.

At the height of the ammo crunch, I got into air gun shooting (break-barrel springer rifles, CO2 pistols, etc) as a way to get some trigger time. It started as a hobby & still is, however after buying the Glock-licensed Umarex G17 & G19X (I own the real 9mm version of the Glock 19X), I began using them as a training aid as well as a plinker. The CO2 version fits my kydex IWB holster, it feels nearly identical to the real thing except for a slight difference in the trigger reset, it’s proven very useful to me. I’m wondering what your thoughts are on this, particularly given the focus of today’s video. Keep up the great content! Love your channel!

I'm still a little hesitant about the Byrna however. I would like to see the technology get a bit better, ie, higher fps, perhaps more potent and faster spread for chemical balls, perhaps longer lasting co2, etc.. Just dont think the technology is quite there yet for my application. But i will still play with the notion for a while. Thanks again👍

Ok, Pad...you're awesome. That took some guts and I'm impressed. I do have to wonder (not that this would impact the effectiveness or lack thereof of carrying this tool for self defense) if Pad likes or is less affected by spicy food. Like I said, the answer to that question has no bearing on my decision whether or not to carry this for defensive reasons because I can't predict whether or not the person I might be forced to use it against would like spicy food. That's not a chance I'm willing to take because if I find myself in a situation where I feel that any level of force is necessary, I've already lost the statistical lottery and I don't want to rely on any amount of luck or chance in that situation, which is why I prefer to carry a firearm like so many others. I just wonder from a purely academic perspective if a spicy food connoisseur (or maybe a smoker) might be less affected by it.

The CO2 starts leaking after you pull the trigger...
They sell hard plastic training/self defense kinetic balls, biodegradable versions of the hard plastic kinetic balls for training/self defense, pepper spray balls, pepper spray with CS gas, and inert training rounds.
The 8 gram CO2 can shoot up to 20 rounds before needing to be swapped, however they recommend swapping the CO2 out after two mags (10 rounds). With the extension, you can run standard 12 gram CO2.

The CS I experienced in the US Army "gas chamber" (a tent into which aerosolized CS was released) at Fort Leonard Wood was exponentially worse than this. Every person was choking, gagging, most were effectively blinded by burning, running eyes and some were vomiting repeatedly. Got a wind blow-back of Guard Alaska bear spray a few years ago on a camping trip when a bear got a little aggressive. That was a decidedly unpleasant experience as well. This powdered stuff looks very, very tame by comparison.

It nice to see the effects of cold on co². Definitely hinders performance. I have one of these exact launchers. It will shoot through many layers of cardboard when inside and warm. The co² cartridges dont puncture until you pull the trigger the first time. Its kinda a big dud but after that they come screaming out for what it is. Im a bigger guy and can appendix carry(i make custom leather holsters) this and it keeps it warmer for sure for the cold time of year. Also, the mags come with an integrated allen wrench on the back of of the mag for co² cartridge swaps. You can shoot 15-18rds at max performance when not cold. I had a buddy ask me to shoot him in the back while wearing a thick woolrich coat just to see how bad it hurt. I shot him between the shoulder blades and no sooner did he turn around he fell on the floor quivering with pain. There are a few other videos on youtube showing effects of the non kinetic rounds. They mess you up. Most in summer so the balls splatter with a bigger cloud. Look them up..
Try it out another time this summer if you still have it. Atleast through the chronograph.
