    Greetings from SJC! After much waiting, I finally got my camo green Byrna starter kit and overall I'm pretty satisfied. The only major drawbacks are the co2 cartridge allen key set up (there has to be a better way) and the fact that pepper balls are not available in California and are considered 'illegal'. Great video head to head comparison, subbed!

      @AlternateArmsSD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! I sent a suggestion to add some sort of protrusion on the end to be able to remove and re secure that with your fingers. I've been told that something along those lines is in the works. We shall see ;) Thanks for watching!

      Yes find an engineering firm to weld a little piece of metal at the end ,so your fingers can turn the cap. Byrna has made a 12G adaptor and cartridge available from June 2021, Shoot in the face with solids then hit attacker with launcher ,breaknose etc, learn som KragMaga etc...The leaslethal is a cheating way to blind,distract attacker to give you time to hot them in the face,throat,neck for a quick takedown. When they are down reload and empty a mag of solids in the mouth down the throat...Lol

    As with everything I buy, I researched the living daylights out of these. Here's what I found. 1) The Byrna guns are 'twitchy' and not as reliable as some others. 2) The price of these Byrna, SALT and others are all around three to four hundred dollars with the exception of one. *The Umarex T4E P2P HDP .50 Pepper CO2 Gun which comes with 10 Pepper powder and 10 Rubber Ball rounds is under one hundred dollars, and I've not had a single failure unless the co2 tank is nearly exhausted.* (plus the Umarex holds six rounds rather than five and uses standard 12 gram co2 bottles rather than these dinky 8 gram)

    • @AlternateArmsSD
      @AlternateArmsSD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Absolutely!!! I have two more to test against them as well. Next video is a nasty contender but still on the upper end of the price scale. We shall see. Thanks for watching and welcome to the family!

      The umarex is nice, especially if you get the first strike .50 cal empty fsr shells for pepper round. But the first strike fsc is the most reliable and realistic one so far and it shoots hard hitting. 68 rounds. Of course If you get the drum round from g3d paintball or adn paintball and add that to your tipx, then you have the option of shooting fsc 30-50 rounds and you'll never have to reload in a situation where there's danger plus reloading with the g3d is extremely easy

      I have the Byrna with the 12 oz capacity booster installed on the end called a Boost Adaptor but after reading your post I purchased your Umarex and also a similar Scorpion by Lancer Tactical. Both are similar but dissimilar. I've not had any problems with the Byrna or any that you stated but as you stated, the Umarex is under $100 as is the Scorpion by Lancer and I have no problems with any of 'em. I'm just into firearms and collecting, even though these are technically not firearms but rather 'launchers'. I just love 'semantics' and what can be done with it. lol Anyway, I have these three launchers as well as ones by Pepperball, which is a beast and other lesser names. I even have a Kimber pepper sprayer pistol and holster. I only use one of the pepper 'pistols' if I am some place that restricts firearms and then I use a pepper pistol and a Taser, which are technically not firearms, or shock devices, so I'm over-covered with the defensive 'weaponries', but better that than under or none at all, right mates.

      @@FoxBonly how do you like the Scorpion?

    • @FoxBonly
      @FoxBonly ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roryswan9083 Hi Rory. I don't have the Scorpion holster. That's the leather holster from Tactical Scorpion Gear that the SD fits in to and I ordered the cloth, nylon, denim or whatever the fabric is direct from Byrna and here's the catch. I buy things because I take anything that I'm interested in to their limits and have to go though the entire system getting stuff I don't really need because I guess that would be because I'm ocd that way??? lol
      Anyway, I made up the excuse that I would carry the Byrna in places where CC is not allowed, but I usually avoid places where it's not except my local post office whose postmaster gave me permission because we know each other for a long, long time, and they carry that authority because Congress said it's ok but it's the postmaster general in Washington that has said no and so the laws state the local postmasters can give special permissions.
      But where I was going with this is that because of this, I've not had the opportunity, chance or maybe, my own self-inflicted restrictions to carry it so I have no experience to share with you.
      I wish I'd known about the Scorpion when I purchased mine from Byrna because they first told me they had no holsters for their units, then a year later I saw they did, then they gave me problems ordering it because they don't like shipping to post offices until I showed them how much business they were losing by not shipping to them and explained how they like many other US businesses don't understand the new PO shipping policies and how much safer they are than leaving packages outside on front steps just ripe for stealing.
      In any case, I smartened them up and then had an issue with the sale price and on and on it went. I've talked with the Inventor and owner of Byrna on several occasions regarding that and other ideas, but as with any business these days, it's a bit rough trying to get through to them.
      Had I known about the Scorpion at the time, I'd have ordered it instead but thanks to you now, my wallet just might get lighter because you brougjt it back up to my attention and I may order it now. Thanks alot. lol If I do and you still would like a review, I could make a promise to test it and get back to you or rather do a jen psaki move and 'circle back to you' on it. LOL

    Great review 👍 I agree the Byrna does not like any type of rubber balls. I purchased 5 gram nylon with steel riot balls and my Byrna love them. Great video, but using a CO2 cartridge can cause the gun to "freeze up" in cold environments, because when the gun is fired, CO2 gas is very cold, so combined with extremely low outdoor temperatures, the weapon could become unusable. However, simply brandishing a gun will usually scare a perp away.

    • @AlternateArmsSD
      @AlternateArmsSD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Greetings! I thought about that as well. What would have the opposite effect. However, considering anyone carrying would not be outdoors for a period of time which would allow the carts to freeze or expand, with the weapon directly exposed to the elements, I can’t see that being an every day issue. Typically, they are on your side from the car to the place you’re going. Thanks for watching and welcome to the family!

    I've been trying to decide on what SD Device would work best for myself and my colleagues. I work in the Limo business in Minneapolis. With all these crazy riots and car jackings going on, I need something less lethal to defend myself or clients if a situation arises. We normally carry but there are locations where lethal weapons are prohibited. Such as MSP Airport and other federal properties. A few cops actually mentioned the Byrna and recommended it to me. Thank you for taking the time to create this video.

I own a flea market and, if the need ever arises to protect myself, my customers, or my vendors, these are a much better option. I am also testing several other models in the next videos and I've found a couple I was impressed with. Folks have been suggesting different models and brands they would like to see as well. The list is ever growing it would seem.

The difference between the paintball version and the home defense version is the regulator, and I believe, the firing bolt assembly. The home defense version is capable of a much high fps due to the pressure relief valve being tweaked and the bolt assembly having more holes.

    I have the Byrna SD and love it. I shoot the solid nylon rounds and have never had a problem. The rounds are very inexpensive on E Bay. I also have the Byrma Boost to use 12 gram Co2 bottles in my Byrma. Both the 8 gram and 12 gram Co2 bottles work good. The 12 gram probably have more firepower and more rounds fired per Co2 cartridge. I could get easy 15 rounds with the 8 gram but I think over 10 rounds were less powerful. Have not tested the 12 gram yet but I would expect an easy 15 round capacity with full firepower. The Byrna is extremely accurate !! Don't break into my home. My Byrna is loaded and I will hurt you. A Co2 cartridge can be kept in the loaded Byrna and will not leak pressure because it does not puncture the Co2 cartridge until the trigger is pulled once. So... the Byrna can always be ready.

      @@AlternateArmsSD the Boost Adapter adds between 5-10 fps, so it doesn't really add any real speed boost, but it does allow you to get up to 30 shots vs 20 shots out of each cartridge I found. I was and am so close to getting the Bryna. It’s on sale, $280 for Black Friday. But I would never buy it for $399. Never. Don’t. It’s blocky. And I think (with no proof) that even if you love it and put it in a special case every night, it’ll break after 3 to 5 years. I could be very wrong. But it’s blocky and doesn’t feel great to me. Personally I don’t see how they could make it a better design unless, they moved the co2 tank to the handle and then put the guns in a track that runs under the barrel. Then, you probably could have a magazine which is huge for reloading, and it would lose some reliability. Again, this is my opinion and I don’t have huge hands. Just regular, medium sized gloves hands. But I own hand guns that are very tailored to people and feel more durable. Steel has that effect.
    For a concerned person, lives in an area with homeless, road ragers, riots etc. I would say buy one. Immediately. If it makes you feel safe and brings a better quality of life to you. Then $280 is well worth it. Me personally, I would rather use a kimber pepper blaster. As it’s way smaller. Way cheaper. But way less effective. I’m betting my life on, I can fight. I usually have a knife. And I run marathons, so most people aren’t going to just run me down. But, I have a kid. Can’t run that fast with her. So I have a kimber.
    I’d highly recommend people have something. This is expensive. Get it in sale, sure. But be warned. Larger than you think, blockier than you think.

    Question 2 -> would you use the pepperball option indoors? Would the pepper also get in the user's face and disable the defender as well? How would you use this for home self defense?

    • @AlternateArmsSD
      @AlternateArmsSD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Greetings! The C02 cart doesn't actually puncture until you pull the trigger. You can leave it loaded and ready indefinitely. I have heard from some sources that the pepperball rounds do have a shelf life of around 6 months although I haven't tested that myself.
      As far as home defense, from my testing indoors, the powder tends to stick to the object it hits. It will create a small cloud in the immediate area if you fire multiple rounds. Its nowhere near as "messy" as pepper spray.
      There are many other kinetic options too. You can fire steel core riot balls which will certainly deter any would be attackers (particularly if you hit them in a soft area or the face.)
      I have several more options coming up as well.

      I'm not sure how it is now, but I read that Tippmann/Mission got their rounds from Byrna. Byrna was based in South Africa and Mission rounds stated "Made In South Africa". Would it be far fetched that Salt stills gets their rounds from Byrna? Nope! Money is money. I also believe that Byrna gets their buttstock kit used on their Mission 4 launcher from Modern Combat Sports, a paintball company that also deals with less lethal contracts also. One of their products is...... pepper rounds.

    I have a Byrna and love it so far. Just one thing that happpend to me was that the pepper balls started to brittle and break after a long time loaded in the magazine. When I shoot they burst immediately. So the training balls(hard balls) are always loaded. What would you guys advise on how to approach this.

    • @AlternateArmsSD
      @AlternateArmsSD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s a very good point that I will address in a future video. The pepper balls can, and will, degrade over time depending on weather exposure. (Humidity, excessive heat, excessive cold, etc) My suggestion, and what I personally do, is a staggered magazine combining solid and pepper balls. The first round chambered is a riot ball. This will shield the pepper balls in the magazine to some degree. Also, I’d suggest changing them, if unused, every 3 months or so. (Depending on your environmental conditions.
      On a side note, I have found the “pepperball branded” balls to be a but more resilient than the Byrna branded.

      @AlternateArmsSD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, they will hold their seal for quite a while but if you’re going to store it for future use you’re going to want to replace the cartridge. However, you can simply “dry fire” the weapon to discharge the remaining CO2 if you don’t want to fire rounds. It’s always best, particularly if you are going to carry this, to keep the cartridge unpunctured until you need it. Thanks for watching and welcome to the family!

    Excellent review! My question is regarding the Salt Supply launcher. Does Salt actually modify the Tippmann Tipx to handle additional FPS? I've heard a standard Tipx for paintball purposes has much lower velocity. So was anything done to the Salt other than cranking up the velocity adjuster? Any upgraded hardware? I'm considering just getting the Tipx and adjusting accordingly to accommodate for self defense, but I want to know if there's more involved than simply turning up the velocity adjustment. Thx!

    • @AlternateArmsSD
      @AlternateArmsSD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So many folks have referenced the Tippmann and in some future video I hope to head to head the salt and the tippmann. (They certainly look identical) As far as mods to velocity, I'm not sure. I do know that the tippmann is primarily a "paint ball" gun which limits its velocity to the rules of paintball whereas the salt is a "self defense" launcher. Whether or not that actually makes a difference, only a head to head will tell. I'll have a good FPS meter shortly so we can get a good side by side comparison.
      One thing to note, higher velocity is not always your friend when dealing with pepper balls. I they break in the launcher (which they most certainly will with higher pressures) you're likely to dust yourself as much as the attacker. I'll be conducting more "burst" type tests in the near future.
      Have a great weekend and welcome to the family!

      Actually, I did BUT, if you recall I mentioned that strange "gassing off" that the Salt Supply did on the last C02 cart. Well, it caused a loss of about 20%-30% of the pressure to be lost. (Apparently this was a normal occurrence when the gun thinks the C02 cart has too much pressure) I didnt think it would be a fair comparison at lower power.
      That being said, I did test afterwards using a new solid (smooth) rubber riot ball wit ha steel core and got similar results to the Byrna. The balls penetrated the head easily.

      I just watched the video on Byrna's site... The CO2 cartridge gets punctured automatically the first time you squeeze the trigger. It can be stored, ready to fire, indefinitely.
      That's a HUGE selling point. Very foolish of them to bury that info about 5 minutes in to the 3rd video I watched trying to find that out.

    • @juicyfruit6311
      @juicyfruit6311 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can keep an unpunctured cartridge in the chamber indefinitely. I believe, Byrna's puncture once you take it off safety. The SALT/Mission/Tippmann punctures on the first trigger pull and is ready to fire on the next pull.
      Takes seconds. SALT is easy to maintain. It's a paintball gun that's been around for a long time. Plenty of videos to show you how to maintain and troubleshoot it. Cake walk.

      Heh, you might find this interesting, but I get this argument now and then. At the end of the day, if you have to use your actual firearm in a self-defense situation, and you kill somebody, lay your weapon down, raise your hands, you’re going to jail. You’ll have to go through the entire process. Not to mention the fact, if you are an actual human being, killing another person will eat it you for the rest of your life regardless of whether they deserved it or not.
      You will never hear me tell you that a non-lethal weapon is as good as a lethal weapon. However, we don’t live in the OK corral. It is not a constant gun fight in every single scenario of life. There is a reason that they use these for riot control. There’s a reason that they use these as back ups. There’s a documented and well-known reason that people use pepper spray. You need to remember that every single layer of self-defense counts. You’re not going to hit somebody and make them mad. Typically you’re not out there firing at the Incredible Hulk or Godzilla. Any regular human that takes a direct hit, or multiple hits, is going to go down and go down quickly. There is absolutely no way to describe you how horrible that pepper gas is.

      Greets and welcome to the family! Interesting take.. However, at no point did I ever insinuate that this was a "replacement" for an actual firearm. Of course an actual firearm is far superior but this is meant to be a less lethal alternative to those who cant carry a firearm (due to local laws and regulations *Or locality or country*), those who do not wish to carry a firearm for personal reasons, or for those who are simply more comfortable with a another form of self defense. These are not, and never will be a replacement.
      That being said, these are most assuredly not toys. There are countless videos showing the effective nature of these types of self defense items. Not every situation will devolve into the "gunfight at the OK corral". There are many situations where this type of item would be quite effective and sufficient without the added issue of killing the other party.
