    What a trip you had. Those gurnards were stunning. That shark you lost I guess was a large Porbeagle, but like you said there have been Threshers around, so could have been. To bend a size 12/0 hook like that, and that run it did, that was a monster, and you knew it. Next time bud, next time. Nice big blue as well. Awesome vlog John. You are inspiration for the masses. All the best to you and family.

    It's tough & very annoying when a fish is lost thru no fault of your own. C&R are my go to hooks too & have never let me down - like your similar experience until this lost fish, but then again just how often do we pull against a fish as powerful as this shark/tuna that straightened your hook? Not often, so how do we know any hook is up to the job until tested under extreme conditions? We only have the manufacturers word for it & place our trust in them.

    • @TheFishLocker
      @TheFishLocker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have landed some exceptional fish on their hooks and this is the only time I have been let down. Could be a simple manufacturing fault in that 1 hook.

    Porbeagle = bronze whaler with very good dentures and a decent notion of using them. Gurnard = sea carrot or old croaker and one to go for when the chish & fippery has some. Commercially caught sharks usually rig, but the bigger the fish the higher the mercury concentration. Nice video. Col, NZ.

    Another extremely interesting video and very educational , I was absolutely frustrated and gutted for you the hook that bent and broke off the end, I am still thinking just how big that one was🧐, the sea was absolutely flat calm , I’m hoping to get out soon on the east coast and fingers crossed it’s as smooth as this day in post. PS, iv been viewing in your gear on shop and ordering a hoodie and was wondering if you do the cap as seen in your vid ,?. I understad that you were gutted. Every fisherman knows the feeling you get when loosing huge fish at leest when it's the hook that failes and not the line snapping.You still caught a big blue shark after all and that must have felt good. Looking forward to your next video as always. All the best to you and your family 😊

    Too bad, it was undoubtedly a big one that got away. I for one would have liked seeing it and I enjoy Your family's and Your successes. Thanks for sharing, John.
    Your broken hook looks exactly like a hook fractured during crimping; as we know, hooks normally break near the middle of or higher on the bend. The tip probably broke off almost immediately after/during Your hookset but held under even pressure. Then the additional surface area at the 'new non-point' helped to bend the hook.
    FYI I fish all my flies barbless and therefore crimp thousands of barbs. I crimp before wasting time & materials tying on a useless hook. The reason is that even high quality hooks (not too soft or brittle, that rust away) will fracture very easily when crimping the barb. And the breaks are rarely visible. To crimp put the plier jaw squarely & directly over the barb point. With firm, even pressure the barb will curl back to the hook or flatten. Never apply heavy pressure or twist. Barbs themselves can also fracture, creating a small flat notch (still illegal in most barbless waters. Fish legally.)(file or discard as You choose). Sorry about the long post.
