No auto tune. no Pitch control. No earpiece. Live audience. Live orchestra and tiny little corded microphone that stretched across the nation and now the world!oh yeah no falsetto. He was a rare countertenor

Technically, some of that was falsetto. He was just so good at blending it in that it seems like his natural voice.

This performance by Bobby Hatfield was from 1965, in the height of the Vietnam War. Imagine being on the battlefield or someone waiting at home for their loved on to come back and listening to this song. The words take on a whole new meaning!

Written for a 1955 movie, "Unchained Melody" was 10 years old when this was recorded (live.) A site (which YT will not permit me to name) reports that there are 671 known cover versions of this song! This version by Bobby Hatfield (half of "The Righteous Brothers") is widely regarded as the best of them all.

This song orignated in 1955. When Bobby & Bill formed the Righteous Brothers, each had a list of songs that they could sing solo. This is Bobby singing Unchained Melody, live on the Andy Willaims show in 1965 TV show. I remember watching this as I grew up with these gentleman. You can hear the duo sing one of the most played & copied song, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling, live again in 1965 but in black & white. Elvis even commented that this was Bobby's song as his singing was impeccable. Sadly, Elvis sang this prior to his passing in the mid 1970s.
Also, watch the movie Ghost (1991) where Bobby's studio version was used when Sam & Molly were playing with his clay modelling jar.
Bobby's version is the best and will forever be his.

Bobby Hatfield was one of the greatest singers ever, this song is one of the best in music history. When he teams up with Bill Medley they belt out such very good songs as You lost that Lovin Feeling Soul and Inspiration Just once in my Life. They were on 🔥🔥🔥🔥 doing The Night Time is the Right Time and Little Latin Lupe Lu. Sadly Bob passed in 2003
Bill Medley is still performing at age 84 with Bucky Heard.

Bobby Hatfield was one of the most talented singers ever and the other half of the Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley, was an equally talented bass baritone. Together their harmony is unmatched to this day. So many great hits and so many live performances on Shindig which was a popular weekly TV Show of the 60s. They were regulars along with Glen Campbell, Bobby Sherman and Donna Loren. The best performances were on that show with Shindig's own band, backups and dancers. They knocked our socks off each week with songs like this but it was their tear the house down R&B that we looked forward to. Loved you reaction to this magnificent man and his amazing voice.

There is a longer clip of this song showing Bobby Hatfield & his singing partner, Bill Medley talking to host of his show, Andy Williams aka Andy Williams Show (Andy is a crooner of his day meaning he is also a singer). During their conversation, Andy asks both of them who will sing this classic, and Bobby pointed at himself. Prior to question, Andy also asks them on how they gotten their name, Righteous Brothers. They stated that they were doing a live show, and audience stated, "that is so righteous brother!" Name fits for them. Righteous Brothers were nicknamed as Blue Eyes Soul.
Interesting note is that Bobby was little nervous as he was singing this classic because his mother was in the audience.

This song was actually written as part of the score of a prison movie. The singer was a prisoner asking his beloved to wait for his release and not move on to someone else. More than 600 singers have recorded Unchained Melody, but most folks agree that Bobby Hatfield's version was the best -- although he insisted he had a bad cold and wasn't sure he could do it justice on the night this was taped. If you haven't seen the Righteous Brothers, Bobby Hatfield was half of the duo and just happened to sing this song by himself.

Unchained Melody was written in 1951, I believe, and it was written for a forgettable prison movie called "Unchained". Many singers both before and after Bobby Hatfield cranked out what is now considered The Gold Standard for the song.
The live version was performed on the October 25th, 1965, Andy Williams Show.; you should give a listen to several of Andy's hit songs.
There is a longer version of this TV episode where Andy talks with Bobby & Bill, and Bobby is huffing & puffing like he had just ran up a flight of stairs. Actually, he was suffering from an upper respiratory infection, a bad cold, bronchitis? He also suffered from a severe case of stage fright, and he tossed his cookies every time he before he went on stage.
If this wasn't bad enough, his mother was there hearing her 25-year-old son singing for the very first time and he was very afraid about disappointing her.
I'm fairly sure that no one in the audience, or any of the 70 million folks out in TV Land, were disappointed.
Check out another song of theirs called "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" you'll be glad that you did.

    Unchained Melody:
    Bobby Hatfield live performance.
    {The Andy Williams Show}-
    Episode #4.5
Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965:
Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice ( in this performance his range is an incredible: D3 to G5 sharp) to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield each sang a song as a solo vocalist on their albums.
As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
Sadly, on Nov. 5, 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack in a Michigan hotel room just prior to a Righteous Brothers performance, apparently in his sleep at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was , oddly enough a huge hit because it was recorded merely as a filler song for their fourth album, not for release as a single. Philles Records owner/producer Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip B-side to writers Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “) as to which side of his Philles single was the A-side.
The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley to make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better.
’And I said, 'No, you can't!’ [Medley Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did! In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,'
which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer.
I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B-side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' but the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

If we could ask Elvis, I bet he would concede that this man did this song better than he could. (Other songs, prolly not ; )

I love Elvis but on this song no one has ever come close to this performance. Please don’t watch the Elvis version because it hurts to see the King bested so badly.
