With all due respect to the many artists who have covered this song, including Angelina Jordan, you need not have bothered. Bobby Hatfield cannot be bettered.
Not the original, just the best! This was written for a prison movie in the mid-50's and covered by at least a dozen singers before this. But Bobby totally killed it.
Bobby owns this song. No one sang this better than he did. You need to respect that he had a cold. His mother was in the audience. He put his whole heart and soul into this song. I was 16 yrs old when I watched him sing this beautiful on the Andy Williams show in 1965. No auto tunes, just pure raw talent. RIP Bobby! ❤❤❤❤
I was 15 and was frozen in place when I first heard it. It remains my all time favorite song. THE DEFINITIVE version no matter who else sings it. This song belongs to Bobby Hatfield.
The BEST live performance ever - no auto tune, no dancers, no lip sync - just pure raw talent!!! His smile at the end is because his mom & wife were in audience!! He didn't want to go on that night cause he had a cold!!!! That is Andy Williams - who had a show for many years!!!
Bobby Hatfield OWNS this song. I really do not believe anyone can sing this song better than Bobby. This was LIVE before an audience with no electronic enhancements. It was an incredible unmatched performance. RIP Bobby - you're beyond fantastic.
Hundreds of singers have recorded this song. NOBODY does it like Bobby Hatfield. This song was used in the movie "Ghost". The Righteous Brothers were 25 at this time. No auto tunes. Live performance, no second takes and his parents were in the audience. This song was written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained". Check out "Ebb Tide". In 1965, and way before, singers actually had to have talent to make it in the music business. Check out "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Soul and Inspiration". For Big Band sound, check out Glenn Miller's "In The Mood", "Moonlight Melody" and "Sting of Pearls". Check out Connie Frances "Where The Boys Are". Louis Armstrong "It's A Wonderful World". Judy Garland "Over the Rainbow".
Bobby was known to have quite a lot of stage fright. This performance was especially great because he was very nervous as his mother was in the audience. Word was he was a bit under the weather as well. No autotune, no special electronics, one take live only. You used the perfect word - Magical

1965 - - live tv, no retakes, no do over, no auto tune. No pressure but his mom was in the front row, reportedly her first time hearing him sing publicly
14:24 As someone else has already said the man in the pink was Andy williams. Andy Williams was a huge star for several decades and had his own variety show. He would often times have big stars on such as the Osmonds with Donny Osmond and the Jackson 5 with Michael Jackson and his brothers. Andy Williams has a beautiful voice of his own. You need to check out some of his music .
This song was originally released by other music artists in 1955. “Unchained Melody” had been around for ten years when Bobby Hatfield sang this song. The audience clapped early in the TV performance, because they were very familiar with the song.
The incomparable Counter Tenor voice of the late great Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Done (Live) 59 years ago in 1965 on the NBC Andy Williams Televisions Show. Unchained Melody was composed by multi award winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret for the (1955) Prison Movie "Unchained." It was first sung by movie and stage actor and opera singer Todd Duncan for the 1955 movie. This performance by Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra of the Andy Williams Show. Performed 10 years later. Became the quintessential version of them all. It has become the standard by which every orchestra and every singer has use ever since. This performance by Bobby Hatfield and the NBC Studio Orchestra has gone down as the greatest live performance in television history by many in the entertainment industry. Together they created magic that will endure for a lifetime. Brilliant!
I don’t care to listen to anyone else’s version of this song. I don’t believe anyone could ever sing this song better than Bobby! This performance was beautifully perfect!
I was born in 1964 the last year of the Baby Boomers. I found your channel looking for Righteous Brothers reactions. Elvis is my favorite Singer and the Bee gees my favorite group. I am so glad I grew up in the 60's and 70's and 80's. It was a Golden Era of Music. Andy Williams was a huge Star and was the one who introduced the Righteous Brothers.
Three other Righteous Brother songs where both sing are You've Lost That Loving Feeling, Soul and Inspiration and I Just Wanna Make Love To You. If you like their music they are must listen.
Back in those days love songs were derived from the heart, not from the groin. A man named Al Hibler made this song popular back in the late '50's. Then the song was revived by The Righteous Brothers.
No auto tune or fancy electric magic just 100% talent then add to the fact that Bobby had a bad cold at the time the performance was brilliantly perfect
I saw a recentish interview with Bill Medley. He said the album was released because of the reaction to the song in Ghost. It earned a box full of platinum records. One for every country where it sold more than a million copies.
You may have heard this song, but not like this.. This is one of the few live performances that is better than the studio version. The best (solo artist) live performance of all time.
Bobby threw that "I really need your love" in for this iconic live performance. A masterpiece of a real voice. "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" was featured - sorta - in "Top Gun". You may recognize it when you hear it. "Unchained Melody" was written for a chain gang movie.
I was born in 1949 and remember this on the radio in the late 50's but to date I have yet to hear a better version than that done by the Righteous brothers.
While I love Elvis' cover of this song, this will always be Bobby Hatfield's song. Bobby was still recovering from a cold and nervous because his mother was in the audience when he did this amazing solo performance.
Premier songster in the 1960s-1980s; a pop recording star; had his own TV musical variety show (this video is an excerpt from a 1965 show). The untitled song was composed for a 1955 prison movie titled "Unchained"; since the tune was so popular, and widely recognized, it was simply tagged "Unchained Melody." This live TV version is highly acclaimed as the best version EVER. The version heard in "Ghost" is part of a studio cut. The studio orchestra is very professional and performs maybe as flawlessly as Mr. Hatfield!
I drove the stage tractor-trailer for the Righteous Brothers tour, they sang like that everything. That was over 40 years ago, and at the twilight of their career, but they could still sing and they'd been doing it for a living for over 30 years at that time.
Andy Williams was considered one of the greatest vocalist of alll time. This was 1965 and Bobby was 25 years old at the time. Many people consider this to be one of the greatest love songs ever written..
Righteous Brothers are iconic. No autotune, just pure raw talent. Check out You've Lost That Loving Felling. It has both of them in it. It will blow your mind! Love your reactions!
Wow, I feel old! 😂 I was 2 when this came out. Now I'm 61, and still love it! ❤ For all its faults, TH-cam is an incredible blessing for preserving so much older music, films, TV shows and more, and making the works available for free, for new generations to enjoy and learn from. Let's never forget that! Along those lines, I'd recommend you check out Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was one of the greatest guitarists of all time, yet never became as famous as, say, Eric Clapton or Jimmy Page. If not for TH-camrs posting and reacting to his work, he might have flown right under my radar, even though I was in college and constantly surrounded by music during his heyday in the 1980's. He passed in 1990, I believe, so years before the Internet became widespread. Yet his music lives on through the magic of TH-cam. ❤
The host was Andy Williams and they were on his show. He was a great singer too. Absolutely no one could sing this song like he did. He will forever own this song. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Bros. was incredible and so was Bill Medley with his deep voice on other songs they recorded.
Thank you for this reaction. How very interesting to hear your remarks. I was born in 1950 and I'm the average age of the baby boomers. I graduated from high school in 1968. Now aged 73. Imagine what I think! (about the music of my generation and beyond.) Rock/R & B/pop/blues etc. of that era was played and sung by musicians with the bare minimum of electronic processing. The musicians all played together and had to get it "right" in one take. People felt their fellow musicians' soul and reacted to it in the moment. They "sang off each other." Once recorded, the sound was much less processed, and I believe this preserved as much of the soul as possible. I think that much of the soul has been removed from the recordings or even from the live performances of today as a result of all the processing, correction, auto-tune, mixing, etc. Another thing that has been removed is the delight of hearing sounds that might not be exactly on key. These are exquisite and are as wonderful as the soul they capture. Auto-tune should be eliminated altogether.
I was 16 when this song was sung by Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. They did not write it and it was sung as part of a movie, (can't remember when) but no one has ever done it like Bobby, he was the best.
The guy you asked about is Andy Williams this was his tv show. He was a very good singer in his own right one of his most famous hits was called "Moon river" he also done a few Andy Williams Christmas Christmas tv specials ✌️❤️
Thanks, Kids.. yep, Bobby was amazing... totally live, no synths, no autotune, no screaming or straining.. just pure talent... appreciate your listen...
The gentleman they're talking with is Andy Williams. He had a variety show and he's also a talented singer. There's a video of him singing Scarborough Fair with Simon and Garfunkel which is really good. They harmonized beautifully together on it.
This song was very moving during the Vietnam War when we all had loved ones that we were praying would come back safely, hence the line "I'll be coming home, wait for me" was heartwrenching. My beloved "second brother" Pat and a neighbor Bill came home in flag draped coffins. God Rest their Souls 🙏
This song was originally written for the movie, "Unchained." and was a hit when the movie came out. But although it was covered dozens of times before Bobby's version, Hatfield sang it best. And his is the one remembered forever.
As far as the mic, they were supposed to bring out a different mic for the song but Bobby grabbed the one off the stand and started. Listen to Summertime by Bobby and I just want to make love to you by Bill with some input from Bobby and of course, You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling by both together, and I’ll never Walk Alone from the Ed Sullivan show.
Bobby Hatfield's is a cover of this song, but widely considered the definitive version. The guy in the middle is Andy Williams, who had this television show on NBC for ten years, and is one of the greatest and most successful singers of his generation.
"Unchained Melody" was written for a little known prison movie "Unchained" (1955) and was sung by Todd Duncan, a well known opera singer. It's a love song a prisoner is singing to his loved one while he is in prison.
Please listen to Lucy Thomas, her version . She recently had her first concert, and two more coming. She's from England, she's a beautiful singer, has 5 CDs, and was on the voice kids at age 13 in England. So many wonderful covers she's done. Ty
The guy in the middle was Andy Williams. This song was done live! Bobby's mother was in the audience, and he sang this when he had the flu. No autotune!
I was a mere teenager when I watched this performance on prime time television in 1965. A lot of good music in those days. I might be a bit biased because this is the music I grew up listening to.
This is the Andy Williams Show the guy in the middle is Andy Williams he is also a singer. This song was in the movie Ghost with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. Bobby Hatfield owns his song, no one sings it better than Bobby, is vocal range is magical, pure gold. Righteous Brothers forever.
You can react to their song you’ve lost that loving feeling where both of them singing. It was amazing n timeless. This song was featured in the movie top gun(the 80’s version, not the recent ones)😜😜
Wow, so glad you are going back to a time when some of the greatest songs were written and featured some amazing vocalists. Keep these songs coming and I'll keep watching you guys. How do we get a request to you? Keep up the great reactions!
Thank you! You can just make a request in the comment section 🙂 We can’t guarantee every single request, because we cover so many artists, and each one gets dozens of requests, but we try to get to as many as we possibly can! If a song is requested by a lot of different people, that helps get it on the list quicker also. We appreciate your support!
@@Killermcknight Thanks for responding. You guys are amazing! Keep it up. Music makes us all feel a lot better especially in a world full of stress> God bless you both!
I was born in the 80s in philippines but i was introduced to music like elvis presley, beatles, tomjones, etc. There was no excuse you wont know they are in radio stations and your neighbors loud radio 😂
My understanding is that Bobby's mother was in the audience and trhis was the first time she had ever gotten to hear her son, Bobby, perform before an audience. He really went all out and delivered a truly epic performance. I think this is probably the best live performance of a song maybe ever. It's rare, maybe 1-50 or 1-100 times, where a live performance of a song not only lives up to the studio version but surpasses it and not by a narrow margin. Bill Medley is a great singer, he and Bobby did lots of great work together. This song was almost just tailor made for Bobby. Lots of really good, talented performers have covered this and some of them aren't bad, a few are quite good, but none come close to this.
This song is also way before my time, but I absolutely LOVE IT!! Btw, regarding how they got their name, I found out a few years ago that earlier in their career they were actually performing at a predominantly black nightclub down South...and the audience fell in love with them, and someone in the audience yelled out something like, "You're righteous, brothas!!"...and that's how they got their name...lol. I love that story. Also, although this song was from the 1960s, it made a huge resurgence in popularity in the 1990s with the release of the awesome movie "Ghost" (1990). You should also check out their other famous song, "You've Lost That Loving Feeling". That song was famously featured in the 1986 movie "Top Gun".
The host in pink sweater presenting the Righteous Brothers is Andy Williams ( he is a professional singer) and this was his the TV show every Sunday night in the 1960s.😊
That’s Andy Williams in the middle, one of the greatest crooners and singers ever. You ought to listen to some of his songs. He really is popular in his Christmas songs.
Yes, it was magical in those days and we knew it as it was happening. It was fantastic time to be alive and the music, cars and women were all the best. Life was a party.
This was totally live, not the least bit embellished, but purely Bobby Hatfield’s incredible voice. You’d probably appreciate it more if you played it all the way through.
"Unchained Melody" was written for a mid fifties movie about a guy in prison. Bobby and Bill had a deal, each would do a solo on their albums. If you want to hear them both, try "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling." That song is ranked by BMI as radios most requested and played song of the 20th century. 25 years after Bobby recorded "Unchained Melody" his recording was used as the background music for a love scene in the 1990 movie "Ghost." The public reaction was so positive, the album was rereleased, and it earned pile of platinum records. One for every COUNTRY where it sold more than a million copies.
There will never be another duo like them again! They are the only version! It’s only Bobby on this one. 😎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I was born in 52. I could be your great grandfather!
Need to check out ‘You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling’ live where both are singing but Bill has the lead. And if you want to go back further, Andy Williams, the host of the show that interviewed them, has done Moon River beautifully and it was my Grandma’s favorite
This is literally the greatest live performance of all time.
IT TRULY IS!!!!!!
Elvis couldn't touch this.
With all due respect to the many artists who have covered this song, including Angelina Jordan, you need not have bothered. Bobby Hatfield cannot be bettered.
Well said!
Or Elvis….
@@sabrinajosephs441 Not even close.
Austin Brown, from the a Cappella group Home Free, does an amazing job! by far, my favorite rendition!!
Exactly...it's the most covered song in history...and everybody who's done it after Bobby are still chasing far behind
That was how the original sounded. No help. No autotune. Just talent.
Not the original, just the best! This was written for a prison movie in the mid-50's and covered by at least a dozen singers before this. But Bobby totally killed it.
This live version is better than the released LP version.....
It was Bobby, an orchestra, and a microphone. He was a master vocalist.
His voice is true and pure. No one can do this song like him. No one.
And no-one hearing this performance, by Bobby Hatfield alone, is being cheated!

Great reaction! IMO, one of the best live performances ever!
The host of the show is Andy Williams, another wildly popular crooner back then.
Please listen to Lucy Thomas, her version . She recently had her first concert, and two more coming. She's from England, she's a beautiful singer, has 5 CDs, and was on the voice kids at age 13 in England. So many wonderful covers she's done. Ty
"Who is the guy in pink?"
My heart stopped 4 a moment.
The guy in the middle was Andy Williams. This song was done live! Bobby's mother was in the audience, and he sang this when he had the flu. No autotune!
This is a song you slow dance to with your true love. Sung live! And he's handsome!
Watching your facial expressions listening to this masterpiece is so satisfying and gratifying. Thank you both for your raw and honest reaction
I was a mere teenager when I watched this performance on prime time television in 1965.
A lot of good music in those days. I might be a bit biased because this is the music I grew up listening to.
Great reaction! Now its time for their song, 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' ...you'll get both of them for that one, so good!! 😍
Noone does this song like they do, nobody does justice to this song they that do, nobody can ever top the rendition of these young men.
I was a mere 15 years old .....to quote a great writer-"It was the best of times....it was the worst of times. "
This is the best love song ever made .. Bobby Hatfield is singing it of the Righteous Brothers
My all-time favorite love song. Our soldiers loved to send this to their sweethearts.
I agree no one but no one can sing this song lije Bobby, this is his song now & forever
This was totally live, not the least bit embellished, but purely Bobby Hatfield’s incredible voice. You’d probably appreciate it more if you played it all the way through.
👍🏻
Correct, The Original Move was Titled (Unchained) The lyrics were from an Inmate to his Love..
This song is also well known for its use in the 1990 movie "Ghost".
But, this is better than the studio version used in the movie. Here, Bobby hits notes at the end that are unreal.
The host of the show was Andy Williams, one of my all-time favorite singers. The Righteous Brothers were/are a favorite, too.
This is Bobby Hatfield of whom nobody can match….nobody
Lucy Thomas has just released her cover of this. It is phenomenal ❤
Agreed. I commented separately too.
Listen to Bring Back That Loving Feeling, to hear their amazing voices together. ❤
The guy in pink is Andy williams react ti him his big hit was moon river, you can hear the brother with deep voice sing you lost that loving feeling
Thank you. Love his voice
The greatest performance in history .
There will never be another duo like them again! They are the only version! It’s only Bobby on this one. 😎❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I was born in 52. I could be your great grandfather!
They’re great together! Haha hey… I’m not sure about GREAT grandfather…. My grandfather was born in 47. So maybe just grandfather 😋
Need to check out ‘You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling’ live where both are singing but Bill has the lead. And if you want to go back further, Andy Williams, the host of the show that interviewed them, has done Moon River beautifully and it was my Grandma’s favorite
The song itself is from the 1955 prison movie "Unchained."
the host of the show was Andy Williams, a famous crooner from the 40s and 50s.
