Final pull-out brings end to costly peace mission.
American and Italian troops finally left the beaches of Mogadishu
on Friday (3/3), bringing to an end the costly peacekeeping
mission. Marine General Tony Zinni has repeatedly stressed that
the final stage of operation United Shield would be the most
dangerous. He was right. The Marines on the beach had sporadic but
intense fire-fights with Somalis positioned at the airport. Tracer
bullets flew above Marines' heads as they waited to be evacuated
from the beach, but Americans did most of the shooting. At least 5
Somalis were killed. The shooting began earlier in the day when
Somalis fired at a Marine platoon protecting the evacuation point.
Nervous Marines constantly scanned the airport for snipers and
rocket propelled grenade launchers. The Marines said they shot
only when they had to. The commander of the operation, Lieutenant
General Anthony Zinni had an uncomfortable moment himself when his
amphibious craft broke down. He and eighteen other marines were
rescued after drifting for two hours. All day Americans were
retreating from their positions, and looters followed in their
wake. UN buildings were ripped apart by impoverished Somalis who
scavanged everything right down to cables in the sand. The U.S.
Marine commander reported not a single casualty among the 1800
Americans but spoke emotionally of Somali losses and the end of a
troubled UN mission in Somalia. After suffering so many casualties
in the first mission in Somalia, operation United Sheild was
proclaimed a success. However, Somalis are left with no legitimate
government and the continued prospect of civil war.

This is some pretty spectacular footage. You can see the nervousness of the last troops out as the watch locals running to take over the base. Also those airboats are pretty cool.

The marines were there for several months, there was no attacks, then president Clinton pulled the marines out. Constant attacks against the peace keepers. This video is the Marines when they were pulled out a few months before the Blackhawk down incident
I served with a guy that was on a amphibious ship off the coast when the Rangers were under attack. They were gonna go in and help, they were stood down at the last minute!
