SOMALIA: UN PULLOUT: US MARINES SHOOT DEAD GUNMAN

Hopes that the US-led operation to evacuate UN troops from Somalia could pass off without bloodshed were dashed when US marines shot dead a gunman.
The Somali fighter was killed after firing a rocket-propelled grenade towards American troops.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Pakistani UN troops have set sail for home, their tour of duty at an end.
Safely behind the lines of the joint US/Italian evacuation force, Pakistani soldiers manoeuvered their tanks to the dockside.
The Pakistanis stayed behind when other members of the multi-nation force withdrew from Somalia.
Their departure signals the end of a humanitarian effort which saved many lives but finally lost its way in the shifting sands of Somalia's factional conflict.
The American and Italian marines watched the Pakistani pullout and the ensuing Somali takeover of Mogadishu airport with a mixture of nervousness and bemusement.

"We're gonna be alert, I'll tell you that. We've been alert since we've been here. Trying to get the marines some rest. Psych them through, have some resting while some are on watch. So, we'll be ready no matter what."

If the Americans hoped the presence of marines would deter violence during the UN withdrawal they were to be sadly disappointed.
A sniper who fired a rocket-propelled grenade over the US forces provoked instant and deadly retaliation.

"We had a CS team up in the tower and the LAR'S were there tying to site it and they couldn't get an exact location. By the time we got to it - they were a lot closer to it - so they just took it right out."

As the last foreign troops prepare to quit Somalia, they can only watch as militiamen loyal to warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid rush into the power vacuum they leave behind.
