American and Italian troops finally left the beaches of Mogadishu
on Friday (3/3), bringing to an end the costly peacekeeping
mission. The Marines on the beach had sporadic but intense fire-fights with Somalis positioned at the airport.
Operation United Shield was proclaimed a success, however Somalis are left with no legitimate government and the continued prospect of civil war.

The Italians didn't leave until the shooting started after dark. That shooting you hear was to cover their departure. I don't remember there being that many of them.

@Alfa&Omega 00000 Italy never conquered Somalia, it actually established alliances with local Sultanates, whilst other clans from the Dervish and the Hiraab continued to fight up until the second world War. Italy, like Britain did not have a presence beyond the littorals on the north and south east of the country, the hinterlands where never encroached except by the British once with the support of their airforce against men on horse back. The north was never a colony but a protectorate under the auspices of local clan authorities, same in Italian territory except for Afgoye, which was a farming communes set up by an Italian noble family with the permission of the Hiraab clan, this is literally italys "colony" in a traditionally Nomadic society. In the 40s the Italians agreed to work with the Somalis to conquer Italy, which they did in a year and occupied it for at least 5 years where they failed in the late 19th century in the Massacre of Adwa. No one forced anything on the Somalis, in fact every time a fresh Italian conscripts came to Somalia believing it to be another European possession would try and abuse Somalis, everytime a Somali was whipped by an idiot Soldier, the Somalis would behead him with zero consequence. Somalis are not like other Africans, it is why the nazis's intellectual forebears made an inclusion for the Ethio-Somalis as part of the Caucasian race.
