Dead Space on GOG - gog.la/MakeUsWhole
Also wonderful work by @sparkiegames on the intro! Sometimes it's Sparky1j. He's everywhere.
I would've had this out in October if I could've, but Haze was overpowering. I'm also desperately behind on emails but playing catchup, so I'll pin the games list back when it's more managed.

I've worked with the Wii controllers before, and I can tell you that the waggling shit isn't because they thought it was fun, it's because the designers gave up after trying to get that rectangular little bastard to fucking cooperate. It has a few accelerometers that give a /rough/ idea of where and how the controller is moving, as well as a list of functions that trigger off those readings. In theory, you can build gestures or different actions around these functions. However, the INFURIATING part is that they work MOST of the time, but not enough to actually include in a shippable product. Like if spacebar was bound to jump, but the spacebar only worked 80% of the time. The only thing that even remotely works like it should is the waggling function (it's been like 5 years I don't remember it's actual name, but I remember it was labelled stupidly), so it ends up just being an 11th button for the controller.

When I was in a band I connected a pair of wiimotes as midi controllers to my setup, strapped them to my wrists and waved my arms around like a wizard to control synths at our gigs. For like 10 years now I've thought I was a chump that couldn't figure wiimotes out, because I can confirm: they do exactly what you expect 80% of the time, and whatever the Fuck they want the rest of the 20%, no matter what I did with them :L

They licked a lot of problems with the motion plus but by then, it was probably too late.

    • @Izithel
      @Izithel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +55

From what I know the more accurate tech used for Motion Plus was supposed to be in the original controller but a combination of cost saving and a corporate 'this is good enough' saw it shelved.
Of-course when they launched most of the developer and player feedback was that, it was in fact, not good enough.
By the time they introduced the Wii-Motion Plus it faced the problem most add-on hardware faces, the audience is not going to buy it unless they need it, developers aren't going to design their games to require it because they don't want to shrink their market by excluding people who don't have the addon.
Bundling the hardware with the game makes the box price higher, shrinking potential audience, and is hard to do if you're not the one also making the hardware.
Also considering the Wii had gained a reputation for being for casual gamers at that point, many hardcore gamers avoided the platform, and more enthusiast gamers are more likely to buy add-ons.

The problem with VR games is that many people live in conditions which make VR setups awkward. As a result you have two extremes: Big corps which make games to promote the tech and don't really care about the game itself and small indie studios that can push revolutionary things, but they will not have the polish because of small teams, shoestring budget and problematic visibility. Think Fall Guys - game had everything, but next big game lands and everyone forgot about them.
It's like 3D western porn, which more or less stuck in horrible 80s era until the point where Source Filmmaker gathered enough attention and raised enough people knowing how to 3d animate. All tools were there, but there were no medium to pull people into.

For what it's worth, this game was a pretty entertaining spin off. And it's great to see the Dead Space from the perspective of someone who witnessed the initial outbreak. A lot of horror games follow the events, with you picking up lore to piece together what happened, so you always see people begging for games to show off the case zero event, And it's nice for a game to actually show that side of things.

well that scene you showed of from extraction, isn't the most casual reaction to encountering alien life in a sci fi story. that award goes to the 1994 miniseries red planet. in it a family of colonist's of a planet named new aries, who when inspecting their hydro farm get's attacked by an native animal, called an water seeker. but they quickly find out it's actually an illusion created by a straight up alien, who starts copying their words to learn their meaning. do you what the families reaction is, to this life changing, worldview shattering discovery? they treat the thing like a stray dog the parent's want the thing need's to be back in the wild, while jim want's to keep it like it's some pet. it's only until later they actually recognize the thing as an intelligent creature, and at that point i half expect the alien whose name is willis, getting into a huge rant about how stupid they are. here's the full miniseries on youtube if you do not believe me th-cam.com/video/qMeZjmQbj-0/w-d-xo.html

I might even go so far as to say it *even* rivals _The Expanse_ in terms of realism, because _Planetes_ doesn't have any magical drug that makes people immune to otherwise deadly g-forces or anything else that can't be explained by today's science.
For christ sakes, they even show in the very first episode that pretty much every astronaut has to wear diapers while out on EVA, which is a real thing.

It also doesn't have magically efficient engines that can support a 1g burn almost indefinitely. But The Expanse needs at least those two things to make interesting combat. I'm more concerned about people who call Mass Effect realistic despite their FTL making no sense even within the confines of manipulating mass.

Huh. I totally admit to passing this game over because "oh, it's just a rail shooter" - pleasant surprise to see it's far more than that. I might have to emulate it on Wii sometime or something.
And yeah, it would be fantastic in VR. The Resident Evil 4 VR port (not on rails, but it's a VR implementation of a similar game style) is stellar and I'd love to see more classic games given that treatment.

Dead Space really was a perfect series for me. They absolutely nailed a perfect mix between the slasher genre where you get a decent cast of characters surviving, never knowing who will be killed and atmospheric dread with an alien artifact tearing people apart mentally.
There's also so many unique necromorph designs that were never used. The body horror aspect was so well utilized like The Thing.
I only ever wished for in the series was instead of fighting hordes of enemies, maybe tone the scale down yet make every part of this creature try to kill you. I'd rather fight one or two necromorphs in a hallway where every time I sever a body part a new horror could emerge.
I'm apprehensive about the remake to an absurd degree. That "ambient" fog on the ground makes no sense and really bothers me. But their dismemberment demo was pretty impressive for it to be in that preliminary stage.

Stop sleeping on it, tell that story. Plus, a very good excuse to use AoM music in an appropriate place!

I am sad to say that the Remake didn't bring any of the cut enemies to the game. But holy shit did the Remake blow it out of the water. If you're watching this and undecided on whether to get the Remake I issue you a challenge:
Go buy it on Steam and use your free one hour of play time. If you aren't sold on the changes in that time, fair enough. But I think you'll appreciate it if you're new to the series or a returning veteran.
The only people I've heard hate on it are TURBO purists, which is funny because Motive shows a shitton of respect for the source material and stays very authentic to the old experience while adding new, and dare I say, improved life into the game. The turbo purists are the type of people who look at Isaac's new dialogue (which is expertly performed by Gunner Wright and very well written to keep in line with a Dead Space 2 Isaac) and then stubbornly keep to their guns that the silent protagonist was better in every way. Despite the fact that Isaac really only ever speaks when spoken to in the Remake. If anything, I actually wished there a few more times in the game where I could get his input on things happening... It's that good.
    Go play it, please.

The first time I encountered an active reload system was in Mafia, I think. It might have been a bug though. If you fit reload, and made a roll jump right after it, your gun was reloaded instantly.

I wish more games counted the reload partway through the animation rather than after it's fully completed, it's such a bitch switching out *just before* the final frame and having to do it again

@@spacebassist i feel like i encountered a game that kept where you left off with the reload at a certain point in the animation. So if you just slapped in the magazine but didn't chamber it and switch to a different gun real quick, when you switch back then you'll just finish chambering it. Cant remember it's name though so either I'm misremembering or it's been years. Or I've smoked too much.

@@DisorientedWanderer I can honestly see that existing. I'm being an armchair gamedev but surely you could update a variable with what frame/stage of the animation it's in and call it again when switching back
Also I don't mind just having the animation count it part way through so I can feel like a pro gamer for "reload cancelling" lmao

12:09 I'm glad people still remember House of the Dead 2, my favorite of the series. So many hours on the Dreamcast at my grandmas house as a kid were spent on HotD2 and i'll always love it.
