I always feel uncomfortable travelling with full busses and trains...All those people shouting, bumping into me and pushing their scents around me are just.....ugh!!! And sometimes they try to communicate with me.....And there are other times when I get so lost in my thoughts that I don't realize I'm standing in the way.
My son is 7 and waiting for an autism assesment and I would just like to thank you for all the videos. They are very helpful in understanding what he is going through and why he does certain things.
Thanks for the video, I am also a late diagnosed aspie (currently building my own TH-cam channel about autism if you ever fancy collaborating), and I find public transport so stressful! The worst part for me is choosing a seat - and hating sitting in any way touching anyone else! Thanks for the tips.
I've become quite an expert on public transport now! I get the public bus daily to school and I go to London every month on the train and tube to get to medical appointments! I agree, headphones or ear defenders, I always read the Doctor Who magazine on the train and I always have someone with me on the train (my mum usually) and on the bus to school I sit in the same seat everyday. If someone is in my seat it disrupts my whole day though
Hi Dan duimpje omhoog voor je!!(Thumbs up that is)!I was as a kid massively interested in trains so i never had(have)any problems travelling with public transport(bus, train, tram or metro). In The Netherlands you can buy a pre ticket or if you have a OV(public transport)chip card in which you can deposite money. Every time you want to travel you simply log in at your starting point and when you´ve reached your designation you check out and the money is withdrawn from your card. This means that whenever a track or road is blocked you can choose a detour(even a longer one)but when you have reached your designation the price is the same. It is not perfect but it can be easey sometimes when you have to switch lines but that requires much thinking in my big head though lol. Peace mate!
I used to ride buses and trains all the time. Including the ferry. But now I have to learn how to drive a vehicle. And safely too so that I don't hurt myself or others.
Lia Weasley what’s helps me in school when I’m having high anxiety leading to a meltdown, I put my head on the desk and read. I also go to the bathroom to have some alone time. This helps me calm down loads. If your allowed in ur school, then maybe listen to some music as well.
I get how difficult how public transport is I have to get a double decer bus to school but I love to turn my music full volume and I try not to get stressed however if my routine is changed that morning then to get the bus with other pupils is so then I get sensory overload it is so difficult to prepare with asd but I'm definitely going to use you tips as I'm planning to going on some trips like to London. thanks video was awsome! ☺
I really relate to this! Public transport is a biggy for me too. It's already difficult when I know the route, bc of sensory stuff and all the ppl.. It get's really taxing for me if It's a new route and/or longer journey. I actually avoid traveling alone. If I have to, I'll research every detail (how does the station look where I have to change trains, what are the numbers of the trains, etc) and print out the information. That helps my anxiety. But having a travel buddy is safer bc. stuff can change, trains cam be delayed and you can miss your connection. Also it really helps to rely on their guidance. My orientation is very bad on crowded train stations. Sadly I don't have the funds for either !st class tickets or an uber/cab. However I always wear headphones and sunglasses and try to ignore ppl., who just wanna chat, even if that may be rude. And I have stim toys with me and try to allow myself to stim. I also have communication cards, but I still didn't use them. I feel like this needs practice. If I wait to long, until I'm in shutdown, I can't use them anymore. And to be honest I didn't have the courage to use them on complete strangers. It's not only, that I'm ashamed to out myself as disabled in public (irl, on the internet I do this all the time), it's actually that I kinda expect physical violence. :( Don't know why that is. ... Sorry for rambling ...
lol wooh! Thanks for reading my question. Most people I've discussed sound sensitivity to have been under the impression that it's only negative. However, I can blast music and feel it without any kind of discomfort or anxiety. Saws of any kids, jackhammers and blenders(unless I'm controlling the buttons) are a whole other story. Great video, I'm glad you had such a nice experience at the TH-cam space. That flatliners video had me cracking up hard last night.
Another great thing about wearing headphones, even if you aren't playing anything on them, is that people are way less likely to try and socialize with you if they think you are listening to something :) About taking an Uber, I find that I'd rather walk the busy streets as people seem to be more likely to keep to themselves when they are walking. On many occasions I have had ride share drivers try and make small talk the entire ride, which is extremely uncomfortable for me.
If I'm travelling in unfamiliar places, I use maps on my phone to identify which stop I need to get off at, and watch the map as I travel so I know when I have to be ready to get off.
Could you do a video on Aspergers and time? It's basically how Aspies have trouble planning things and seem lazy. I have this problem. I often don't plan when to do school work and it always builds up until I start to get really stressed. I almost ended up in trouble a few times because of this...... I find your videos helpful. I can't relate to every single video, but I find it interesting to see how other people experience ASD. Keep up the good work:-)
This problem is called executive dysfunction. I also have problems with this. Now that I am in University I actually failed a couple of classes because of my problems planning enough time to complete assignments. If you want to learn more about it there is an interesting website: www.schoolbehavior.com/disorders/executive-dysfunction/overview-of-executive-dysfunction/ I also found an app that has helped me some, it is called Sloth. It is on the apple app store, I'm not sure if they have if for android though. Basically it lets you name a task and then set individual timers for that task, for example, I could make a task called getting ready, and set timers for how long it should take me to do different things, like getting dressed, brushing my teeth, doing make up etc. It really helps to keep me focused on how much time is actually passing by and helps keep tasks grouped together where I will do them all one by one since I tend to do part of something and then get distracted. Hope this helps!
I like taking to people on the bus or on the subway. I learned a lot and have a lot of good memories on being on public transportation. I like taking to the Uber drivers when I use Uber.
I have autism and I tried yo take the subway for the first time in Glasgow. I thought that it might be the same as the train but it was alot louder and I freaked out and everyone just looked at me
Train rides can be really relaxing unless there is someone on the seat next to mine. I usually get paranoid about my smell or hair when that happens. We can't choose the seats so it's even worse when I get one in one of those around a table for 4 people. I keep looking down because it's the only place where there are no faces. Also, I absolutely hate subways, even if there are few people.
For me on public transport I find the 2 things that are likely to cause me problems are people talking - if a lot of people are talking, the noise level increases and I get real overwhelmed by that, the other is if I have to stand up. I've been to London a few times and used the underground, and coped ok in general, but if I had to stand, I've had to get off stops early due to meltdown (breaking the planned route, which also becomes a problem). Music is my way of coping when travelling - turn it up a little to try and block out some of the background noise, and face downwards to my legs with my eyes closed if things start to get too much.
Interesting video, I myself am not able to use public transport on my own, luckily we have a car so I can still get out and about. That said I don't go out alone at all. 😊❤
I love any technical advancement because it's one of my autistic [Aspergers] interestes and partially do my hyper focus part of my other disability ADHD And I can't stand being out in public talking to people I don't know It's really hard on me it feel I got a lump in my throat Especially Without family
I had to stop taking public transport because I had a panic attack on it. I've had countless Aspergers Meltdowns, but my Asperger Meltdown is very different than a panic attack, and the panic attack was terrifying for me to feel when it was happening, I didn't know what was wrong with me, I was hyperventilating. I described what I felt to someone later and they told me it sounded like a panic attack. For my safety I never went on public transit after that. Before that, I had been taking it for years to travel to one of my favorite places, Sea World. It was bad enough that I never went again.
I get around via public transport a lot because Vienna's system is great and we can get student's discount on tickets which is super useful. screaming kids on the bus though aaah so much sensory overload!! I'm usually on my phone (texting, writing or surfing) when I'm on public transport, or I read something on my kindle, because I find the whole environment to be kind of overwhelming.
Headphones in, music on, stare at your phone. Memorise the route and know where to get off. For trains I hide at the end of the platform when waiting for the train to arrive.
I have a love hate relationship with my local public transit. I live in such a small town that the most people I've ever seen on the bus is three and on the downside that means they don't do routes, they take calls and you have to schedule the ride 24hr ahead if you don't want to pay $5 for a one-way trip. Most of the people who use this service are disabled or elderly. So riding to work five days a week can cost me anywhere from $10 to $25 a week.
Do you have a issue with music? so i have had this issue. Since I have been young. I walk back in forth almost 2-3 times a day for around 20-40 min each time. Also each time, i do that. i just imagine being a superhero or something cool. it helps me deal with stress. if i don't do that. I literally go crazy!
My biggest problem with public transportation is the stress and time. Like a bus, i get really stressed if a bus maybe came late, or if you miss one i can get a break down. Now that i have taken graduation and Will go on a special place before to job right away so i Will again try with buses. I otherwise let me patents drive me.
I have Asperger's and I have my good days and bad days mostly I can't deal with being around lots of people and its hard because some people don't understand
The Wacko Green alien yeah ik my school have given up pushing for a diffrent diagnosis on the autsim at the minute I have classic autsim but my schhol think I have aspergers it been a year and a half but I really lucky as I do get alot if help at school. just don't losse help and keep pushing
One thing you could do is try and contact whoever is handling this for you. Email may be easier since I know phone calls can be pretty difficult, for me anyways. Sometimes giving people a little poke about something can help things move along a little faster.
I have been known to walk a few miles just to avoid due to there being too many people(well that often means more than me and the bus driver.)on the bus or train. Or burying myself so deep in sunglasses , music and books or a phone just so i dont have to make any sort of eye contact or any sort of contact at all. I am 52 so that means I have walked a lot of miles to avoid being locked in a moving object with people...damn
I suffer bad with meltdowns in publin transport. The noise feels like my eardrums are going to burst!👂so I ware ear plugs and they help alot. A true "god" (whitch I don' beleve in) send!
I hate public transport. I have issues with people and have even almost come to blows with them physically on buses. I also have medical problems which involve various hospital visits and have to rely on my sister to take me as I can't 'do' public transport.
Would you be able to do an episode on aspergers loneliness and depression? Ive been stuck in a rut for quite some time now and haven't been able to get out of it
I have to ride the bus sometimes for work. I got kind of scared. The first couple of times. after that, I just got used to it. it's kind of like anything else.
I hate busy places and the grocery store I go to is open 24/7 (Wal-Mart) well I only go at 1 am or 2 am because I know it won't be busy. do you go to a store at a super oddly late or super oddly early time because you know it won't be busy? if it is busy how do you react or feel about the crowd? I feel rushed and frustrated so I end up just leaving very upset with nothing bought most the time
