      the ‘magicians quest’ games. it got a bad rep because people called it an animal crossing rip off before actually deciding to play it. The fun animal designs mixed in more of the yokai designs of other creatures makes it cute and fun. Not to mention the idea of learning magic and having a special event at the end of every month.
      also some of the imagine games: more specifically ballet, ice skating, and makeup artists. they were Japanese Otome (games with love elements) bought by ubisoft (i think) and were repackaged for an American audience. The anime style is so loving and charming, their is deep plot, lots of mini games, and also boys to choose.

    As the one person who has beaten defenders of the core, I feel obligated to say that it has genuine post game content. After you beat the game, you can go back and do a new game + type deal where it’s the same story, but I think you start with all the bakugan AND there’re hidden chests with mechanical bakugan in them and if you collect them all, you get the evil megazord bakugan that’s the final boss. Overall? More postgame content than Pokémon X & Y

    • @flarestorm9417

      I had the DS version. I don't remember all the details, but I recall you could get statues or something of the Bakugan? If memory serves, you could play as the 6 Battle Brawler guardian Bakugan + their evolutions, and the 6 base Vexos Bakugan + Helios MKII. You could also play as Maxus Drago and Maxus Helios.
      I doubt I'd be as into it now, but the concept was pretty cool.

    • @FlooraFlovira
      @FlooraFlovira 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Had it on the Wii. Beat it twice, once for the story and a second time to get all the vexos figurines and unlock max Helios. Then I went into the free mode where I tried (in vain) to get max time scores for all the levels using vexos bakugan, because I thought they were the coolest. Had a blast. To this day it's the most fun I remember having as a kid playing a game on console.

      To be fair it was one of the first games to be released with the console.
      That aside, it really is an excellent game despite appearances. Teenage me was all "hot lady on the cover, ooga booga" of course but by the time you get to the end, the cuteness has taken over and you think about the goofy times you've had with your buddies and the ways relationships have enriched your life. Rub is love after all.

  • @connordarvall8482

    I recently saw Modern Vintage Gamer's video on the DS' hardware. If you have an appreciation for these obscure DS games, you should check it out. A lot of the design choices of these games are contextualised by the hardware limitations. For example, the reason so many sprites are used in games are because the DS has a small max poly count on their 3D rendering engine.

  • @flarestorm9417
    @flarestorm9417 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    Honestly, I'm impressed that Bakugan: Battle Brawlers and Defenders of the Core were able to be replicated so closely on the DS. Usually it's just a different game with the same name, story, background, etc., but they actually kept things mostly the same. I've only ever played the DS versions, so I don't know how good the console versions are, but they were fun for the time.

    It's too bad Feel the Magic was marketed that way because it got so much controversy over its sexual overtones when it's really a quirky, sweet love story. It was seen as a game for perverts. But when I played, it was a lovely, creative little experience.

      I think there was a menu where you could dress the girl up. Options were on the touchscreen with her being displayed on the top screen.
      You were able to swap the screens for the seemlingly sole purpose of touching her, wich felt like an uncomfortably weird/creepy game design choice.

    • @popodumman6816
      @popodumman6816 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      yeah, but I think she always got mad at you when you touched her. The information booklet says something along the lines of "just because she takes your fashion advice doesn't mean you get to touch her!" or words to that effect, which I thought was both hilarious and pretty cool. (Sorry but I'm like the world's number one feel the magic fan)

    as someone who owns a large cartridge of ds games (totally legally downloaded and gifted to me at a young age by a tech-savvy parent) i have a HUGE selection of weird obscure games I haven't even gotten around to. A good selection of ones I've played that i recommend checking out are:
    Beat City (basically a bootleg of rhythm heaven with a weird little story-line and a similar level of absurdity)
    Custom Robo Arena (I'm working on trying to play through it. Weird little battle creature thing like beyblade kinda??)
    Disney Stitch Jam (lol. stitch rhythm game.)
    Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (I really love this game it's so silly and has fun mechanics)
    The entire drawn to life series. Peak customization. There is also a spongebob version.
    Enchanted Folk and the School of Wizardry / Magician's Quest (idk what the difference is since I've only played that second one, but it's basically animal crossing but as a wizard.)
    Feel the Magic (minigame collection like warioware???? but its weird???? i remember being really weirded out by it.)
    Ghost Trick (I still have yet to finish this one but it's a puzzle game of sorts? neat mechanics, hard to explain)
    Henry Hatsworth and Monster Tale (two games with a really neat use of the dual-screen situation. Hatsworth is like a puzzle game combined with some genre of platforming, monster tale is metroidvania combined with a crazy monster evolution tree thing)
    Ivy the Kiwi (platformer that'd also on the wii that I never finished playing, i am very bad at finishing games lol)
    Lalaloopsy (yes, there is a lalaloopsy game, and yes i am recommending it.)
    The Legendary Starfy (like... kirby but underwater kind of????)
    Maestro! Jump in Music (a rhythm platformer? another one with weird mechanics but it's fun.)
    ZhuZhu Princess (play with zhuzhu pets on your ds)
    Magical Starsign (some sort of magic rpg i dont remember it super well since i never finished it)
    Okamiden (i know this one isn't that small of a game but i really love the okami games)
    Pokemon Conquest (pokemon, but make it a strategy game where you conquest places)
    Rockin' Pretty (anime idol band rhythm game where you choose what instrument you play)
    Soul Bubbles (i dunno how to simplify the gameplay but you maneuver a bubble through dangerous obstacles??)
    Spore Creatures (spore, but make the graphics 2d and befriend the other critters. very cute. has a story to it.)
    Viva Pinata Pocket Paradise (make a garden, look at pinata animals, yada yada nature simulator.)
    Zubo (like... toy collector battle game but idk if they ever made toys and it's pretty weird.)
    I could go on and on with the hundreds of game options but these are just some i remember trying and finding interesting.

    OH MY GOD ANOTHER HUMAN REMEMBERS LOST MAGIC! I was starting to wonder if the copy I had as a kid was the only one ever printed. My best friend and I once stayed up until 4 in the morning with a handwritten list of all the rune combinations so that we could unlock every spell in the game. What a wild time. There was also randomly an evil mode where halfway through the story you could do a complete 180 and become the bad guy for no real good reason and beat up all your former friends. Published by Ubisoft, too!

    Personally I like the first Bakugan game a lot more since it actually felt more like an extension between the anime and the IRL game, but I do appreciate Defenders of the Core for how ambitious it was. Travelling across the world, running through tricky stealth sections, and fighting it out with giant Kaiju-like Bakugan in action combat is pretty dang cool in retrospect

    An incredible obscure DS game everyone should play but no one does is Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, a lengthy (but never boring) full-size, extremely beautiful action RPG with an insane plot, endearing characters, consistently fun gameplay, and incredible worldbuilding about being an odd-job doing mech-driving hero on a France-inspired floating island setting getting entangled in magical conspiracies and secrets of the apocoliptic past. The physical version is way too pricy these days (unless you're up for spending a good couple hundred dollars), so I suggest... y'know. Either download it to your Windows DS or find some 20-buck rom dump cartridge on Amizon that has it. The dev team is still making games in the franchise today, but unfortunately they still lie in obscurity.

    In fairness of the lack of female characters in DotC, it's directly mirroring the main cast of Season 2 of the show, in which all the girls had actual jobs, while Dan and Shun just messed about until Marucho did a little funky funky and opened a portal to the new threat.
    All three of the girls (heck, even Chan Lee as one of the two returning former Masquerade goons alongside Klaus) did reappear though and even got a few of their own fights, but the lack of Season 2 powerup caught them all lacking.

    Ninja Town was my jam growing up. I remember I played it originally on a friend's system and my sister and I liked it so much, we had to go to the store and get a copy of our own. We never finished it because the later levels were really hard, but the game had an in depth upgrade system and quite a bit of unlockables. The creator, Shawnimals, is apparently still active today selling Ninja Town related merch among their original projects. I remember the game retailing for $20 brand new, it was truly a hidden gem if you are into tower defense games!

    I would like to formally request a video where you exclusively discuss what you think about "Feel The Magic XY/XX" and "The Rub Rabbits!" thematically, please! I don't know if you can tell but they're sort of my favorite games of all time, and there are surprisingly few videos about them on TH-cam.

    Honestly, the fact that there's just so much just sitting on the DS that is just absolutely well-made is nuts. I'm glad that we are finally seeing ports of some of these, like the Ace Attorney Series (Still missing Apollo...) and Ghost Trick (Which I honestly LOVED playing, and there's a funny twist that I want to keep secret as to not spoil the game. Find the DS copy online via dumps or get the Steam version, it's a great, albeit short game)
    Now that I realize it, Capcom seems to be the only studio porting their DS games to modern platforms... I gotta see if I can get the Lego Battles devs to push for a PC port, ofc preserving that nostalgaic pixel art style.

    Alright, so I have 100%ed both Defenders of the Core and Lego Ninjago but for very different reasons. Defenders of the core is like 2 hours long and once you get over the spectacle of unlocking Maxus Draganoid, you can basically move on. Lego Ninjago doesn't ever get any deeper than "teehee big unit" but it was still a really fun experience at the time, ps you do get to use monster units or more specifically you can play as the skeleton faction and mix and match in the bonus challenges.

    About a year ago, I saw a bakugan ds game at a local thrift store and just felt like i had to pick it up! Its full title is Bakugan: Rise of the Resistance. It’s a tower defense game where when you’re not battling you explore a little world map. I think i finished it with a play time of like 7 hours but i surprisingly had a lot of fun!
    And heads up if someone does decide to play it, I don’t think there are hints for the player for if you don’t know where to got next for story if you accidentally skip a text box so at one point i literally just had to re-explore everything to see where it was I had to go next :/
