Have you ever looked into Coromon? It's similar to pokemon, I'll admit, but I think it has just enough of a unique flavour that it would be worth a mention. c: I only played the demo, though, as the last time I played it, only the demo was out, but it has since released fully!
Monster Racers on the DS has you taming monsters and training them in 2D races against other racers monsters or wild monsters as well as competing in tournaments, definitely a Pokémon & Digimon competitor. It doesn't have evolving monsters, but it has a breeding center where you can create monsters with unique abilities, and it has shiny versions, which are actually stronger than the original monsters. There's also Moco Moco Friends on 3DS, where you collect Plushkin. The gameplay is quite simple and repetitive, but the cast is funny. There's also the overly cute and girly design of everything that really stands out among the other monster type games. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I recently picked up Magi-Nation from a local store ( for GBC ). I also remember playing this one GBC game called Lil' Monster in which the monsters are represented as gems which will allow you to revive them in a different form or can be used as a deck of attack options in battle. The game itself was pretty weird, basic in design, only 60 monsters, and just odd to describe. Speaking GBC and MegaTen... I think the Last Bible series is even closer to the genre than most of the spin-offs, it's first game was released in the West as Revelations: The Demon Slayer... There's also an even more monster tamer like series with Devil Children, I think the 2002 GBA games were released under the title DemiKids? There are way more of these types of games region-locked to Japan. GBC, GBA, DS, and PS1 are great places to look for the genre, though. I love mid to late 90s and early 00s crap like this! They were a big part of the era and just everywhere... it's a shame most would be forgotten over time.
I am still hoping for Ykw 4 in the west (yes i know that Ghost Craft which is probably a Ykw type of game from Level 5 is coming but that doent destroy my hope for Ykw 4) and in my experience i would argue as someone who still actively plays Ykw Busters that Ykw is still somewhat Popular in Spain, France and Germany especialy Spain since nearly every second person i met there is from Spain sad that in 1-2 months this wont be the sme anymore (R.I.P Nintendo 3ds Online)
Yo-kai Watch is freaking great! Though considering you played as Katie in your play though, I’m sure you got kinda pissed when 3 confirmed you that Nate’s continuity was canon.
Wobbledogs caught my attention. It looks just so weird and the concept is very interesting. Thanks for talking about it because I've never heard about it.
Fossil Fighters ia my all time favorite game. The humor is amazing and exactly my kind of tongue in cheek humor with even the character names being little jokes. And it's really fun with the fossil cleaning and battles, and I appreciate how many vivosaurs there are and how much love and care was clearly put into them. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and a peak gaming track in my opinion. The story seems simple at first and then widens up and gets more complicated than you would ever expect. I LOVE FOSSIL FIGHTERS
same!! i played a ton of fossil fighters champions as a kid, and that game had me hooked!! i really want to make a video on the franchise as a whole eventually, like a retrospective or something
Telefang's a weird one. You might recognize it as the old bootleg games "Pokémon Diamond and Jade," but they're an actual original pair of GBC games that just never got officially translated into English (They *do* have a fan translation, tho! Currently v155 last I checked). I say it's weird cause, as the name implies, the game focuses around the idea of using a phone to just... *call* the monsters. You don't "tame" them, you just beat them in battle and they may decide to give you their phone number. Lol. It's got some gameplay quirks (Calling them to battle takes time depending on how far away you are from their home, for example), but it seems like a genuinely good game and I'm interested in eventually playing it. (If nothing else, it has an AMAZING soundtrack) It also has a GBA sequel, but from what I can tell, it's not as good. Probably still worth looking at tho, just in case.
Ykw3's competitive meta is unmatched. It's easy enough to get into if you have the right Yokai and items, and if you have the basics of the combat system down. Sucks the 3DS online is being shut down soon, it's a real treasure.
I was so bad at Fossil Fighters as a kid that I couldn't even get past the bit at the beginning where you have to uncover your first fossil (I was REALLY bad at video games). I would love to pick up a copy nowadays to see what I missed out on!
Another day in monster collection-land, another night without a Spectrobes mention. Anyway, If you like the excavation mechanic of Fossil Fighters but want a little something more + a story not mostly surrounding being a small 10 year old larval human baby going outside to touch grass for the first time, please consider Spectrobes. To start, the playable character/s have jobs, which is incredibly rare for the Monster Collection Genre, and also the primary enemy isn’t the wildlife, or people who use the wildlife, it’s planet-eating assimilation parasites that take the forms of that which they last consumed. Fun! Also an entire star system and its people are dead.
Shame alot of the planned features for Spectrobes was never used and they changed the art stlye to look more anime than was planed. I guess art by the character desinger of the 80's Mario Cartoon,Captain N ,Ghost Busters anf the 1998 Godzilla Animated series was to cool for the world. They barely promoted the game after all that a TV show was planed but all it got was like a few seconds in the Lillo and Stitch Anime. Still one of the very few Space themed monster collectors out there though.
Fossil Fighters Champions is probably my favourite game on the DS. And that is the case even acknowledging the STIFF competition on the system. Truly one of the finest gaming libraries in my humble opinion.
If you're gonna try out smt i HIGHLY recommend starting with either smt4, or nocturne. (If you like strategy jrpg's why not go for devil survivor?) Anyways theres alot of good starting games for trying to get into the series.
Fossil Fighters is another good one the story has love triangle,Dino Aleins called Dinoranions,Evil Team using Legendary Vivosaurus, and Planet Eating Tadpole!
@@maxthenotzi I still am currently replaying it again but yeah the Tadpole lucklily it didn't scare me when i was kid back then but I was suprised though.
It was genuinely my favourite game I played all of last year, the soundtrack is amazing and I got so attached to the characters that the ending genuinely almost made me cry
I haven't played the game yet, only watched the anime, but Dinosaur King's world and characters are such a vibe? Don't think I see anyone else talking about it in the comments.
bro, i LOVE yo-kai watch, i grew up playing pokemon, but on 3ds i like SUn and moon version but for me something is missing, and i search a lot of games and find Yo-kai watch, first im a little pensative to buy, i live in brazil and the game are a lot expensive, but i try, and i LOVE since the start, every time i have the oportunity to recommend this game, i do (sorry for my bad english)
Mentioning fossil fighters and yo kai watch in the same video, based Fossil Fighters was a childhood favorite of mine, ESPECIALLY the sequel even if i could never beat it. I had unreal amounts of fun in the games, and i never wanted to leave the worlds.Too bad the 3rd game is a sin against humanity. Yo kai watch didnt hit the same as pokemon for me, but it didn't need to bc its it's own special sorta monster collector. And its just... Fun! Even if i don't like the 3rd game here, either. Don't hate it, just think its meh
I loved fossil fighters. Ever oasis is another game that flew was under the radar. It's sad, some of these 3ds games deserve to keep their franchise going but seems low sales on the 3ds was their last straw.
This was a really great video! I knew about most of these from an IP perspective, but it seems like you really searched for the best game out of each franchise. That digimon game looked great
The interaction mechanics of wobbledogs is remarkably similar to world of zoo which is a game that only exists in full on wii and that alongside kinectimals I spent most of my childhood playing so it satisfies some of the itch that I miss from world of zoo (the steam version is only half tje game and mostly herbivores
And the habitats of wobbledogs reminds me of those little plastic and mesh bug care kits my parents always got me that I kept crickets and caterpillars in
Never got to play yokai watch, but was actually INSANE about the anime when i was younger. Still better then the pokemon animes imo, and the game has all that nostalgic charm of the series. One of my all time favorite ip’s, and a huge comfort. They came out with some japan exclusive 3DS styluses with various characters on top, i have the komasan one!
Digimon World 3 has least playable Digimon in Digimon world series but play the European version called Digimon world 2003 it had new content and bug fixes not in the Digimon World 3 versions
Yo Kai watch and Cassette beasts BOTH mentioned? Heck yeah, my babies! ❤️ I love wobbledogs as well! My wife loves fossil fighters, I remember watching her play it on the school bus when we were kids! 10/10 video
Been playing a lot of Medabots recently, might use the series to learn japanese proper, since most of the early games are very light on kanji and barely any of them got translated.
SMT would eat my filthy casual backside alive. I've heard of Fossil fighters, but I don’t even think I can play it. Yo-kai watch is pretty fun, even if the story and creature design rapidly got dumber and dumber from game to game. Never heard of Wobbledogs before. Cassette beasts is a genuine masterpiece, and this is coming from a diehard Pokémon fan.
12:18 _psst_ come here I have a secret to tell you last november they actually teased a new yo-kai watch(at least inspired) game to be announced next month it's likely to take longer to release though as level-5 currently has all hands on deck creating 3 maybe 4 -decapolice's release date is confusing- other games to be released this year and at least a new professor layton game next year
Can you please do a video on where to start with Digimon as somebody who played one of their mobile titles to try then was accounced to be discontinued literally days later? I really wanna give the franchise a proper fair shot.
Depends on what type of gameplay experience cause not Digimon game plays the same. If you want something that plays closely to Digimon World 1, Digimon World Next Order is the most accessible option if you are looking for that. If you want classic turn based JRPG experience, I recommend Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. Maybe play the sequel, Hacker’s Memory if you end up liking it. But if you like visual novels that’s almost like a dark retelling of the first season of the anime, Digimon Survive might be exactly what you’re looking for. All of which are available on Steam and Nintendo Switch btw.
