    You gotta remember that The Hollow is like 10 years old, it wasn't really "generic" at the time, it was just what was popular similar to how metalcore has adopted its own new sound now. There are some of those Southern elements in that album too, and even in Challenger, but after that they completely turned to shit.

    As previous commenters have said, you have to listen in the context of the times. These days sure, it comes off as generic, but when it was first released, it wasn't. It's a bit like when people first listen to Enter Shikari now, they come out and say "they sound like they ripped off X band/have a generic formula", even though their debut came out in 2007 and they were one of the first bands with that sound to get any real attention (plus their sound has somewhat changed with each album....The Spark pretty much had no screams/shouty vocals for example).

    There is a reason Memphis became one of the biggest bands in the entire genre and it's because of this album. When this album came out, it was top tier metalcore and pretty much every single metalcore band stole the sound and tried to make music like it. Bad take calling it "Generic" when it paved the way to what "generic" metalcore is now.

      Memphis always had personality with their music, and A LOT of impact, since Sempiternal change the game, and Memphis still holding their sound but more technical, was when if you don't replicate that sound, you are generic, and now many bands copy Sempiternal (an amazing album) and make it THE generic metalcore, like it's happening with bands trying to emulate Spiritbox production and composition, the first than do it are originals an innovators

    I'm with you on this, but sadly some of their popish newer stuff (some is good, some is unlistenable IMO) has the southern rock sound. The brand new stuff is like straight arena core, but the 2014-2016 is a mixture of arena, pop, metal. Its especially noticeable when they play a guitar solo. It has a weird blues sound to it. Almost like lynyrd skynyrd joined up with Breaking Benjamin to play a bridge/solo lol.

    I think it's solid. It's nothing special. Like, this ain't gonna top the new singles from Of Mice And Men or something, but I still think it has its moments. Especially the drums. I think the drums are MVP on this.
    That said, I kinda think it is satisfactory taken in context. This came back when metalcore was the favourite genre to hate on because tbh it was very basic and just kinda not too good, at least quite large parts of it weren't. So I guess I'm that context, it's a solid track.

    I knew Birb wasn't gonna dig this lolol. That's cool, but thing is, the whole reason why you (prob) feel this is generic is because so many bands after this album were trying to sound like MMF on the Hollow. Few bands had really nailed "the formula" for this brand of metalcore yet imo and they did. So generic, maybe, I dunno, but if it is its only because of the legacy this album has within the metalcore genre. Just my two cents!

    These guys have other greats that are better than this. Their first albums were not their best but they have grown and evolved in their sound, and techniques. Dig deeper and I'm positive you find better.

    im starting to think you just dont enjoy crabcore this wasnt super generic back then this was just the sound most bands went for just like these days everyone tries to sound like architects

  • @jeffsmith441
    @jeffsmith441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agree with most everyone else. Metalcore was very generic at the time this was released and this actually felt fresh then. Unfortunately it sounds bad now because Memphis May Fire beat this style into the ground since then and the genre has produced better quality bands since then as well. But at the time this was well produced and their singer stood out in the scene.

    Based on the music video, you'd think that Matt was the only member of the band lol. I wasn't into this one either. It doesn't do it for me now, and it didn't do it for me back then. Even then it came off as being really generic. (Edit: Lotta people saying "it wasn't generic at the time", idk man, it came off generic to me back then, but I'm not trying to get into any arguments w peeps). Some other bands in the genre were capable of some interesting stuff, but MMF never recaptured what they had after their first EP.

      My opinion is very relatable. Nothing groundbreaking then or now.

  • @brennanlundie8649

    I agree completely. I listened to them here and there back in the day, but never could really get into them because their material is generally pretty predictable and doesn't really have a wow factor.
    Not horrible per se, just not my jam.

    Nothing special, the only thing with this is that it made me go back to listen to Underoath, I dont know why.

    • @SmyD87_
      @SmyD87_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I don't understand why people think this band or AA were groundbreaking. There were plenty of other metal core bands leaps and bounds better than them. Underoath is definitely one of them.

    Absolutely loved this song when it came out, but now idk if it’s my disdain toward MMF or the fact that it was just a product of its time but it’s really generic sounding and just all-around meh

    This was their peak tbh before this sound became super oversaturated and generic, but they've basically done nothing but shit the bed since then. Challenger was okay, and then a very steep dropoff. It's clear they are pretty dried up in the passion and creativity department aside from making bland jesus humping music

    I loved this song when it came out, I think it hasn’t aged that well. I think if I waited for this long to hear it I wouldn’t think it was that great. But at the time it was a banger!
