It is, not just for instruments but for vocals too. I remember when our vocal teacher used to do prep tracks for us some of us that worked doing guides mentioned how it would be interesting to add it to guide vocals for novices as well. It’s simple and genial, but it also requires quite a bit of skill to follow through.
It's more of a realization that you yourself have done this all along. I remember back to the early years of playing guitar. Playing along with a tape of my favorite song. As I progressed threw learning the song, I too would do this same thing for the changes. I just never realized I was doing it and never put it on the tape. But just about everyone does something similar as they progress. It's more like an AH HA moment if you ask me. Even worked in audio for years and many of the dance cues singers would do this same way and I still never put it together until this guy. Still kind of has me baffled that I already do this.
@@benjaminmahesh2451 Debatable. I think Sam would be better at playing jazz than Larnell would be at playing death metal tbh. more importantly, it's not a competition, and technically Sam has done way more touring and band environment stuff.
Oh yeah, Devvy made a great choice bringing Samus in. Sam has videos on his channel of him doing drum playthroughs of the songs he did with Devin Townsend.
So glad you checked this one out. That audio cue notation method is absolutely brilliant. Also, as you saw on the TH-cam feed, he does his own reactions to these Drumeo videos, and they're a joy to watch. He brings that same excitement and good-natured humour to them as he displays here. If you get the chance to fit in some viewing just for your own enjoyment, I think you'll like those videos.
As a non-drummer, I thought the vocal ques were the most amazing thing I'd ever heard. I'm glad to see actual drummers are impressed by this too, makes me feel like I'm not an idiot for never thinking of it. Amazing how well he killed this.

I remember the moment I saw this video I was like "I can't wait to hear some drummers react to this" and hoping you, in particular, would. I enjoy your takes on the Drumeo first time series a lot.
I don't really watch Samus' videos, some of his reaction videos maybe? But man... I didn't know he was this good, I was really blown away after watching this Drumeo episode. What a beast.
The cues also let him be free of having to think when the transition is coming, which means he can embrace the part. That is why he is so fine with the fills, I agree with you
I’ve been waiting for reaction vids to this one! This has to be the best one in this series, hands down! He plays DOZENS of fills, and from what I can tell, all of them are different - that’s impressive for a 10+ minute song. The vocal cues are genius! Everything about this is amazing. So inspirational for fairly new drummers like myself. I loved Samus before, but I have a whole new respect for him now ❤
i have been waiting for your reation to this!! I follow 66Samus and catch his drumeo reactions and it is SOOO COOL that they got him to do one of these!! He loves the channel so much. And yes, he is SOOOOO humble which i also respect. I was curious to see what you thought of his "audio cheat sheet" as he calls it and I am glad it made an impression on you! It really makes sense to have those audio cues when you can just up and remove the track for the final recording and YES he is a beast on those drums! Glad you loved it!
I didn't notice that he was uisng the "keep going" prompts to note places to fit a fill, but it was super obvious once you mentioned it. He did it every time. Very cool.
Great reaction. Love the channel. I feel like this is going to be a seminal moment for many drummers and perhaps the community at large in terms of prep. Everyone, myself included, seems to be blown away by his vocal track trick.
Great take. The ghost notes were insanely tight. Idk if he thought stomp-groove 'cause it's Bonham, but for a first take there was a lot of flavor and in a swung groove that breaks down into a slow compound meter. Tasty fills too.
Great video man, your predictions on the patterns he was going to use and why he used them was very impressive and your commentary was very entertaining. I believe you made the original drumeo video more understandable for any aspiring drummers out there, like myself.
Samus is an absolute legend. The nicest guy in the world and an absolute beast on the drums. Please come past his livestreams on twitch. They are a great time!
This is such a good video. The idea of the voice track with the cues for different parts of the song is brilliant. I can't remember if you've ever reacted to anything from Yoyoka. If not, you should totally check her videos, she's an incredible drummer.
I'm not a big fan of Samus's own channel (his TH-cam persona doesn't do it for me somehow) but there's no denying he killed it here. One of the all-timer performances in this series, a classic song, and a super creative approach!
Yea, his humor is a very acquired taste. I've been following the guy for almost a decade, but it's hard to recommend his streams because it's 90% fart noises.
I've been following 66SAMUS on TH-cam since basically TH-cam was a thing. The man is funny af and a talented joy to behold. I do shudder to think what a drummer like Bonham would sound like with today's tech, though. Or even just a double kick pedal. Bonham's right foot was so fast and precise but it's a little bit muddled in the 70's audio mix. Kinda like Buddy Rich doing a double bass solo where he basically tap dances on the pedals for 90 seconds (as a farce) and yet it sounds like Meshuggah 60 years before Meshuggah.
Been a fan of this guy for many years. You should check out his live streams where he does user submitted song requests on the spot. The guy is a monster indeed.
I remember Gavin Harrison mention recording his vocal cues probably 15 years ago at a drum clinic. He also uses this live in addition to the clicktrack. Very cool and useful, I used this method ever since.
It's neat because it's like he's recording direction for himself. Almost as if he has an audio version of a conductor up there helping lead him into each different segment
I wish i could have multiple likes for a video cause you'd get all of them. Intelligent breakdown, open minded, knowledge of the original work, respect to the drummer at hand. Much love and respect🙌
Sam is an incredibly gifted drummer. his technique, taste and skill is off the charts. added to that his passion of just fucking playing 27h a day even tho his wrists may cause permanent damage shows how much he loves it. His streams are great too
I would recommend checking out Samus' drumming on Devin Townsend's Hear Me. Video on the 66Samus channel (its just a nice Drum Cam video) and it's a kinda fun crazy track.
66Samus recorded a song on the Devin Townsend "Empath" album, the song is "Hear Me" which Sam made a drum video of, very enjoyable! Perhaps something you could check out?
the coolest thing of his drumeo has been watching drummers react to the que track thing. I loved the idea and I'm embarrassed I never thought of it. I think we've all done things _similar_ in the studio with clicks or other ques but to do this is another level and really smart. You don't need to look at a sheet, find where you are, or second guess anything. Just keep listening.

I didn't know he was a fucking genius (at least to my eyes and ears) or even better, an incredibly skilled and knowledgeable and practiced drummer. I can't say anything about his technique one way or the other, but this is extremely impressive in its own right. I've watched many, many of these types of videos on Drumeo. Not sure if you’ve heard of Gavin Harrison, drummer from porcupine tree, the pineapple thief, and toured with king crimson. He also does vocal cues during live concerts, partly because the band syncs to a video in the background but additionally just to help him remember the song
I have played live with a team for a time. I use my voice to let everyone where we are. I was taught this playing in a team environment. He is telling himself as a reminder. I'm not surprised, and I do love it so much.

You can very much tell Samus comes directly from the Mike Portnoy school of drumming. Most of his fills and rhythmic choices are bar for bar from MP, who in turn takes a lot from Neil Peart.
I made something like this for the back tracks my band uses live for queues coming into the tracks or for our odd time measures. Since we added that we haven’t had any issues. We just hear me saying “1,2,3,4,5” or “1,2,3,4,Go”
I found that video incredible. The first incredible thing about it was that the drummer had never heard Achilles Last Stand. The second incredible thing was what an amazing job he did of playing it.
He has to have clear vision of what he's going to play and then just an ability play exactly what he's thinking of playing. And that needs tons of confidence. He's technically amazing drummer, but confidence and preparation brings you to goal.
The vocal cue thing is super common in KPop and worship bands. And I've heard the cue tracks of huge shows...you can barely hear the actual music in a lot of the monitor feeds...just cues and a metronome sometimes (and themselves).

The funniest thing to me is how people on the original video at Drumeo quite a lot of people said he was cheating on his notetaking vocal track, while a lot also mentioned how genial of an idea it was and how nobody ever thought about doing something similar. To me, that sort of cue/note taking was not that uncommon because it’s something some vocal teachers use to teach.
You could listen to Decrepit Birth if you want to hear his "serious drums". He has been streaming for years, playing requests on the spot like an absolute boss, too. And he's got the youtube channel with mostly funny-type of videos.
I think I have probably heard every Led Zep song, but I only owned a couple of their CDs, and I eschewed Spotify until two years ago. But I've added a lot of Zep to my main playlist now and every song I I pulled in sounded very familiar. But this song sounds brand-new to me. It's like a magical, hidden, unknown Zep song. And in fact, as of minute 5, if not for the vocals, I would have sworn it was not Zep. Maybe from their last album (which I heard once as a kid and didn't like)? Yeah, I would have guessed Rush before Zep.

I'm nit a drummer but when recording bass and guitar I use this method vocal ques are the way to go
The cynic in me thinks Drumeo gave by far the hardest song to the "TH-cam drummer." The vocal queues are legit genius.
i feel like his method with the vocal cheat sheet would take a bit to get used to, but so worth it once you do.
