Haven't finished yet but I got to the part where you said that the ROM is the only thing you have to swap. This is WRONG! The CIC chips must also be swapped! Edit: OK, finished it and I'm happy to report that this game is almost certainly repairable. N64 games only boot on their respective CIC chips. Revenge is CIC-NUS-6102 while SSB is CIC-NUS-6103.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games Awesome! I should clarify that you don't always have to switch CIC chips if they are the same. Since every 3rd party game and early 1st/2nd party games use the same CIC 6102 there's a good chance you won't have to move it for many ROM swaps. :)
i agree with this because really the net quantity of working n64 games is the same you're just ensuring that historically relevant and popular games remain available to the retro community and who knows someone might figure out how to fix the wrestling game eventually.
Hope you still have the game. Swap the CIC chips! If you had used a Dr. V64/V64jr, CD64, or Z64 back in the day, then you would have been EXTREMELY aware that those games used different CICs! After the first 6 months, nearly all first and second party titles used alternate CICs. Early games and pretty much all third-party games used 6102.
I had a copy of Mario party 2 that had a rusty metal shield. Tried everything to get it to work but no dice. Finally replaced the metal shield with one from wave race and now it works perfectly. Not sure why that worked but now I got a working Mario party 2 and wave race works with the rusty shield.
Hey Riggs. They do make something like a "copper white out". I can't remember the name but automotive guys use it to fix rear window defrosters. It comes in a "pen" and it's basically conductive paint. It probably won't work for pins but you could definitely fix traces with it, if the resistance is right.
it would wear straight off once you slid it in, its not very hard-wearing, you can also get copper tape in various widths but again dont think it would take the abuse
I know, that's why I said it probably wouldn't work for pins. The copper tape idea is very interesting. He could also use the method that is used to make stained glass windows. You lay a copper foil down then coat it with molten lead or solder.
Brad Young hmmm interesting, think i have some somewhere to try, i was also thinking of actually getting thin copper sheet and glue it on with epoxy then solder the joint...
Sometimes I done a swap and it didn't work, I pulled the Sram battery and waited abit reinstalled it and the game worked. Something to do with how each game uses the save state. Worth a try.
I recently went on a binge and watched most, if not all of your open cart videos. When the game doesn't work at first I now expect "oops. I forgot to plug in the system".. haha But Alas it seems this time it wasn't the case. Anyways, I also have a question. Have you thought about doing open console surgery? Recently my N64 has been a bit shotty and it would be interesting to see how you would fix consoles so that maybe I can fix mine. :D
I've been wondering for quite awhile why you got rid of the ambulance siren at the end of your intro. It was both very fitting and funny too. I wish you'd put it back in because it's not the same without it.
I have a copy of SSB that won't save. I already replaced the battery but that didn't fix it. The resistors are corroded but I can't find any for sale anywhere. Do you have a source?
Hey Riggs, you mentioned wishing there were a way to draw on contact points to repair the boards, and it got me thinking.. there have been products made that are just that, the main selling point was to draw traces on circuit boards, but that's basically what a cartridge contact point is.. although it's just a thought, I don't know how well the material would stay on when being inserted into a console. but I thought I'd mention it. ^_^ Either way, I enjoy watching this video series. Have a good one!!
I seen you got it working in the comments below after swapping the CIC chip. Woot! But dat' label... I don't think I have ever seen one so worn before.
Hey John, you gotta swap out more than just the rom chip. When i did a board swap on conkers I had to swap the rom and the other two chips in order to get it to work and save. Hope this helps
Jet Force Gemini requires FlashRAM and CIC-NUS-6105. The cheapest donor game with that combination is… Jet Force Gemini. It is possible to get that combination for less with a couple Japanese donor carts.
Hey Mr. Riggs. I have come "Mario party" for the n64. It doesn't not work as well. If you are able to tell me or what motherboard can I use. To swap out to make Mario Party to work again? I dig your channel man thanks. "TRIBAL1208"
Willom. Rangerreview was half right. US/Japan games & systems are mutially compatible (if you remove some plastic tabs in the cart slot). PAL games (like you said) have a different CIC and are unbootable on unmodded systems.
Is it funny that if you were to teach a class I would pay whatever fee's you would need to teach this to me !!!!! New sub enjoying your channel so much!!!

Yep on N64 gotta make sure you are using the correct CIC
You're right! It worked. :)

the game is either snapped, crackled or popped.
Brian is a buddy of mine and his channel is totally worth checking out. th-cam.com/channels/Fg0Cu8svMFxsmIx6GHP8cA.html
Thank you, John!

Cleans game, shoves in console covered in dust.
I know this is a old video but they do make something like whiteout to redo traces it is a pen called "CircuitWriter Conductive Ink"
Thank you for doing your best, Riggs! I really appreciate it!

Have you ever looked into Copper Foil Tape with Conductive Adhesive to try and fix the cartridge pins

Most likely one of the surface mounted caps on the board, started leaking. Or it's the Power Supply going dumb. For similar reasons.
I love your open cart surgery videos!

i seriously need to get one of those soldering remover guns
You could try the wcw revenge game rom in the ssb board, just to make sure it was (just) the ssb rom that was faulty.
Greetings from the Netherlands !
I have paperboy for nes it starts up Everytime but won't let you start the game. Plays music and does the autoplay but just can't play. Any idea?
I'm right there with you on the handwriting, mine is beyond bad.

What kind of solder do you use.. Lead or Silver for fixing your games..
I seen you got it working in the comments below after swapping the CIC chip. Woot!
But dat' label... I don't think I have ever seen one so worn before.
A sad loss indeed.
Also, Mischief Makers is FANTASTIC.
Let's all shed some tears together.
lol haven't eaten Rice Krispies in decades!!! you're awesome. Never change Dr Riggs.
Hey John, you gotta swap out more than just the rom chip. When i did a board swap on conkers I had to swap the rom and the other two chips in order to get it to work and save. Hope this helps
You said Bro's like Spicolli from Fast Times!
Worth watching for the rice krispy eating....
Right!?
Wait a momment, SSB has a battery for saving the game? OMG! ALL MY PROGRESS IS IN DANGER!!
make one of these with a socket so you dont waste time with soldering when the rom may be broken
try and replace the chip with a CIC 6103 make a follow up video love to see the game work..
i need to repair jet force gemini what cart have same shape?
Jet Force Gemini requires FlashRAM and CIC-NUS-6105. The cheapest donor game with that combination is… Jet Force Gemini. It is possible to get that combination for less with a couple Japanese donor carts.
That thing is rough looking!, hope you can fix it.
Got this game and a bunch of other for 5 dollars each at goodwill
You are the gaming Ben Casey
Water you doing, is water damage lol
323GONZALEZ good joke

I found Super Smash Bros n64 while dumpster diving Good Will. Traded it for $50.
Hey Mr. Riggs. I have come "Mario party" for the n64. It doesn't not work as well. If you are able to tell me or what motherboard can I use. To swap out to make Mario Party to work again? I dig your channel man thanks. "TRIBAL1208"
looking like lester👀
Awsome job on this video!
You should hit up Cody from Cody's Lab here on TH-cam he could probably make some copper white out.
My heart is broken, poor smash bros 64 =(
I agree :(
Do you still have smash bros? Can I buy it from you
This channel is awesome!
Rice Krispies = life
Other region maybe?
No. N64 games have no region lockout. Except the physical notches, on the back part of the cart.
+rangerreview That's wrong.
PAL games do not work on NTSC systems.
