- Our Makers Series focuses on companies and individuals who are manufacturing products for mountain biking right here in British Columbia. We're beyond stoked to present industry legend Paul Brodie as our first subject.
The name Paul Brodie will be familiar to mountain bikers who have been in the saddle since the 90s. Paul's handbuilt Chromoly hardtails were some of the best you could buy in those days, particularly if you were interested in winning races. He's one of the true pioneers of mountain biking and one of the first innovators to see the benefits of the now ubiquitous sloping top tube. As one of the first frame builders for Rocky Mountain Bikes along with Derek Bailey, Paul helped B.C. become a leader in mountain biking and framebuilding from the very beginning of the sport.
Paul no longer builds bikes for retail customers, but he has never stopped building stuff, ever since he made his own "mini bike" for himself in the early 70s. Along the way, he's built reproduction vintage motorcycles from the ground up, taught scores of framebuilders, and had a life-threatening crash while warming up to race one of his board track racers. Paul Brodie is a personal hero. As a mountain biking kid growing up in BC, there aren't many people who stand out more in my mind. I was crushed when I learned that he wasn't going to do frame building 101 anymore. Building a frame with him is one of the top 2-3 things on my bucket list, and I fear I may have lost my chance. But I am, very much enjoying his TH-cam channel these days.

Awesome interview! He lives down the street from my in-laws and he's got these peacocks. Those are the loud little buggers you hear in the video!
When we were there, sadly only one peacock - Peter. Another one had passed on a few months earlier. Paul mentioned he may be on the lookout for another. Peter is a bit lonely.
I follow his channel. I think Paul is a great person, a fantastic teacher and and artist overall! And you can see how much he loves sharing his knowledge. I really recommend, go and take a look! 😉✌️

Hope you guys do more of these. This lead me to Paul's YT channel and I've enjoyed watching and learning from him, he has such a great knowledge base and is willing to share it, failures/mistakes included.

I love Paul's channel I've been subbed for a couple years now and every video is YT gold with tons of information, tips & tricks on how to build & restore MTB & Motorcycles. I wish he was still doing the Frame Building 101 bc I'd love to take one of his classes and build my own MTB.

i had not seen this before now…very few follow their passions as you have. I am fortunate to claim that i have as a real estate developer and historic home renovator. I am at a new phase of life and have always had a passion for motorcycles and bicycles and i’m an avid rider of both…your videos have inspired me to build a bike from a walmart genesis g7 …just kept the large aluminum frame and added all new upgraded components…i wanted a comfortable road bike that is geared towards long distance cruising, but also can get out and stretch my limits for speed workouts…i had never known of builds like what i had envisioned until recently discovering some touring bikes with bigger wheels and tires…these are great all around bikes, and i have no need for multiple bikes…now I want to build my own frame…i’ve never done fabrication, but want to learn…i truly admire the fine quality of your builds and crave building one that clicks off all of the boxes…my concept bike is by no means traditional, but is very straight forward functionally, and designed for easy maintenance and making on road repairs..perhaps one day I can share with you…hope you stay well and keep the incredible videos coming …
I still ride one of his 2007 Infinity series road bike and I'm very happy with it .
His videos are so watcheable with the best content an unbeatable combination.

Your class seems to have become framed as the favourite favorite of many online friends. Sharing knowledge is the most valuable use of TH-cam.
How would Paul brodie build it?
I was told I always would only play with tools and things, so my mom got me a toy work bench, with plastic bolts, plastic saws wrenches, it was for older kids, but I was not interested in anything else, I was only 1.5-2 years old, then by 4 or so I was tearing things apart to see how they work, by about 8-9 I would buy old bikes from other kids and build bicycles from the parts, they would have bad tires, no chain, needing tubes, missing seats or handlebars, things like this, I would fix them or use them for parts, then I got into motorized vehicles, I got a old car when I was 12, driving my dad's tow truck when I was 13, moving cars around the house, and built my first car engine about then, I love making things go fast!

I was born in may ! It is a good month ! Ha Ha ! You have a good out look at life better than all of us beacuse you started your life working for your self in life ! Most of us just had to find a job ! My first real job was in 1969 at Marquardt in san Fernando Valley CA a Bomb Maker ! They got mad at me beacuse said no to run there new divison ! I was going to college ! It was my out of high school job ! You know what war at this time ! But i learn a lot of from there more so than college ! Love Your life so faff ? Straight Ahead ✌😎
They ask me who the president was, I had no idea, so I just laughed, because, I had no idea, didn't know much else either, I had a temperature of 106.9, that's after I cooked down a bit, and could talk, before bi could not talk, and hallucinating badly, all because I had a bone infection, from a crushed heel, so it had to be atleast 107 before the ride to the hospital cooled me off a bit, maybe even 107.2-107.5°F. I doubt it was as high as 108 , but the only change I notice, is memory I cat recall things when I'm talking, or names, I know what ever. It's just not there when I want to say it , that seems to be the only asking effects, I'm lucky to still be here, crazy how a single event can almost kill you more than once!
I really enjoy your stories, I wouldn't mind if you wanted to go into more details,
You could probably start a class of your own, get a metal car shed, as a classroom/work area, depending on skill level, you may teach students how to braise , how to weld, how to machine parts, then mild fabrication, I think ebike frames will be the next thing, that ppl could make money on, maybe 3wheel ebikes, something not far from a motorcycle, but teaching about 3-5 ppl, 2 classes a day, 2-3 days a week, could possibly pay for it's self, then some, I don't know what classes like this cost, maybe make it more of a ciminar, where they sit and watch, you build something, have cameras and TV's showing close-ups, then answer questions, so about like TH-cam only LIVE!,
I'm hoping to build a shop, where I can weld things for ppl, like lawnmowers tractors, fix trailers, maybe build trailers, but harbor freight, has that market, you can buy a small trailer for about $300, but if I only make $100 a week, it's more than I make now! A part time shop at home, isn't a bad idea!
Serious Question have you ever misplaced some thing in the Shop and Blamed Mitch for moving or taking it some where else ?
