Take a journey with me as I head out to the historic townsite of Capetown, California. Originally founded as Gas Jet... or at least... from 1868 to 1876, letters sent from the town’s post office were postmarked Gas Jet. A stop off between Ferndale and Petrolia, Capetown had two "a feed stable, postoffice, hotel, store, blacksmith shop, school house, hall, a dairy and its necessary buildings. It has but one broad street, lined by eucalyptus trees. . . . " There are a couple eucalyptus trees left and numerous stumps still there as you drive through the main street.
Right after the introduction of the car... California Governer and Former Eureka City Attorney, James Gillette, road through Capetown in 1907 in an autocade while running for Governer. They made it to Capetown from Ferndale in less than an hour... with cars coming to age, no longer was the need for people staying over in Capetown on the way between Ferndale and Petrolia by horse or wagon.
The last remaining original building left is the Capetown School building. Thomas Stewart, one of Capetown ranchers, donated the land for the school in 1878. Members of two local families, "Chris Anderson and Ben Flint hauled lumber down the Beach Road from Centerville and built the compact but serviceable structure that still stands at the roadside today."

I was born in Eureka 8n 1970. I have a lot of family history from Humboldt. My family donated the land which is now the city park, my great great aunt's home foundation is located behind the duck pond. Which by the way was built by my grandfather. My grandfather also invented the dragsaw which is in theSomoa cookhouse museum....I have lived my life in Sacramento, but proud to say I'm from Humboldt...I ❤ your channel!!

7:19 1950s born and raised Californian, Humbolt was my portal to wilderness living experiences before I got my driver's license. Fishing, hunting, building log cabins and experiencing pioneer life, learning survival skills and mountain climbing all happened before I turned 17 years old.
Self sustaining pilgrims have always gravitated to Northern California, a great jumping off spot to explore the planet we call home... thnx4 the memories and the wonderful history lesson. Glad to see Humbolt still claims it's independent spirit! It's mysterious landscapes keeps a man humble and honest... a wonderful journey! You made an old man love living...

If you really want to have a good look around this area, get yourself a horse and attend the Half Ass Flat Ride in late June put on by the Redwood Unit of the BackCountry Horsemen of CA, an annual event. Ride through private ranches all the way to the beach and check out the sea lions too. I have seen that gas jet lit. Quite a sight to see. Thanks for the memories.....

Love this video of our family’s little piece of heaven that we call Capetown. A couple years ago we put in a lot of work to the red and white schoolhouse and it is now an Airbnb. We kept the original structure and just did minor changes to the interior. We wanted to keep as much history as we possibly could because that’s what makes it so great. We have old photos of the history of Capetown covering the wall of the hallway and it really does feel like you’ve gone back in time. Check out our Airbnb listed under Capetown Schoolhouse Airbnb on the website. It is listed as being in Ferndale on the website. We are so happy to get to share Capetown with others and hope it brings others as much peace and happiness as it does to every one of us. Awesome video!!

This city slicker just discovered your channel and you've got a new subscriber. I visited Humboldt many times from the 70's-90's & there are so many gorgeous spots. I'm also a lay historian & loved the stories. Well done!
Now I'm off to look at your other videos. Think I'll start with Shelter Cove!

I attended HSU, graduated 91. The Wildlife lecture hall had wood fold up tables on each chair. There was graffiti on all from 50 to 70.
Do you remember the L/P pulpmill? The smoke/steam could be seen for over 100 miles!

My grandmother was a Branstetter, The family still owns the property there. Bill Branstetter lives in the house there. His father Prescott Branstetter was my grandmother's 1st. cousin. Bill is my dads 2nd. cousin. Prescott used to live in the old schoolhouse before he passed away.

When I was a kid, I got to spend some good time on a ranch way up off Wild Cat Road. We used to ride our motorcycles through the mountains on an old logging road down to the Bear River and swim. That was a long time ago, it is fascinating to see your video. I would like to go back there again and have a look around. I did not know the history of Capetown or of the shipwreck. Keep up the good work.

Good work on the creation of this video. Awesome aerial views with music accompanying your narrative. Thanks. There are many isolated wilderness areas in Humboldt Co., showing what Native Americans and settlers saw.

No where we'd rather live. It's our home. The netflix series is part of why we started the channel. Humboldt is imperfect like all communities, we choose to focus on celebrating our Homeboldt from our perspective.... thank you so much for watching... Dock

Thanks for the video! I used spend time in the area between Cape Mendocino and Punta Gorda. I crewed on a fishing boat there. We spent a few nights off Domingo Creek which was a rolly spot to anchor. I sport fished from shore several times too. I always wanted to explore the mouth of the Bear River but wasn't willing to trespass. I had an ancestor that arrived in California when he deserted the Prussian (German) navy at Trinidad Bay in the 1870's.

Been here since hurricane Katrina. Humbled county has the most moderate climate in the states, even when it’s soggy, it’s
Never That tough at low altitudes. I just can’t deal with the direction of California. Selling off a spectacular homestead. Great people, just can’t afford it anymore.

Like all communities, Humboldt is also imperfect. I started this channel partly in response to the Netflix series. For those who've never been here or know what it is actually like to live here, that series was a poor attempt to paint our Home in a broad negative light.

Difficult to understand your commentary, between the wind noise on the microphone, and your
lip full of snoose, other than that, it's good to see a little fresh asphalt on the road to this remote part of the coast.
