    So Windows have seen this Ubuntu with Wayland and Snaps which has resulted in Windows shitting in its pants. This is a perfect modern setup for all home users if your hardware is compatible, fresh modern and fast along with reliable updates and stability Windows can only dream about.

    Ubuntu is probably my least favorite linux distro, and if I really felt like I need any of the features Ubuntu offered, I'd just use Mint.

    I have Debian which has the KDE desktop on one laptop and Gnome on the other. Both have a Wayland session but I don't use it. I use the X11 session though I have logged into Wayland and it works. Some users say that the screen recording and webcam software is not working on Wayland. So I think it's not ready to replace X11. Maybe it's different on Ubuntu as it has a newer kernel but I have not tested this myself.

    Snaps take up more storage space and load more slowly because they come with their own dependencies instead of using the native ones. This way, they don't have to make different packages for each distro, saving time and effort.
    Non- native .deb files may not be compatible with all distros, and can cause problems.Use at your own risk.

      Really? I have not had any problems. I use Debian and I don't have any Snaps or Flatpak. Only Deb packages and some of them I install myself. Because that's the only way you can get Google Chrome or the latest version of Firefox. Other ways you can install is to just download the tar file of Firefox or Palemoon, extract it to a folder somewhere and run it. You will get regular updates direct from Firefox so you won't have to wait for Ubuntu to update.Which they don't always do right away.

      You wrong. Azure is Linux based cloud server and it is effected. Anything that is cloud based is effected right now. Ubuntu Server is doing business with Microsoft and its an issue. That has nothing to do with the desktop computing. I am at work right now and I am using Microsoft Windows 11 just fine. Its the server that caused issues and when they fix the issue don't worry you wont have people migrate to Linux Desktop anyways.

Most office workers only know the basics of computers. So will just use what's put in front of them. They probably don't know they can use Linux but we know better.

      @@AndreaBorman It's the use. Not what you're saying. People will go to the software that makes them money. If Linux is the answer then Linux it is. I like to use pfsense that's on FreeBSD. Similar software is based on Linux OpenWRT but it's not a firewall software it's software for routing. I have both use cases, I use WRT for my routing needs and PFSense for my firewall needs. Depends on what works on a certain OS and so on.

    I'm forced to use MS Teams for work and I have never-ending problems with Wayland. Can't share desktop using Slack either. Oh and my preferred screenshot application (Flameshot) won't work nicely with it either. And I don't really like Gnome. But the wonderful thing is, I have all the options available to me to use alternatives 🙂

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is still the Xorg or X11 session on Gnome. So they should still have it on Ubuntu. You could log into that and see if MS Teams works. Unless it's the package that Ubuntu provides as I know sometimes they don't always provide the latest software. In which case you could install MS Teams from the web by downloading the files or adding the repositories to your system. The Mate or Cinnamon desktop might be a better option as it has the more traditional Windows style start menu and layout.

    even if you decide to get flatpaks running on ubuntu it still adds more encompasing features. to get games running like in windows is a bit of trial and error but due to not having windows footprint in memory can yeild better performance but based on hardware and your choice of games mileage can vary. proton and dxvk are good start area. Welcome to linux enjoy your stay. "didn't see the other videos" either way good to see someone else experimenting :)

      And also not doable as Windows would lose quite many customers.
      Even more so in developing countries or those who don’t really need to use computers.
      As for mega PC, depends on which version of Windows you run.
      Personally I use the Enterprise Edition which is quite bare bone without bloatware and other crap the normal home editions have.
      It is, thanks to the above, lightning fast and being on Win 11, the best Windows since Windows 3.1.

    You might need to install synaptic on 24 to get some stuff to install too

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's right. Synaptic doesn't come installed on Ubuntu as it does on Linux Mint and Debian. You have to install it yourself and you also have to install GDebi. I don't know why that is. It's not a problem for users who have used Linux before but brand new users won't know this. So those things should come pr-installed so that users will have them available to them.

    • @rayzer1981
      @rayzer1981 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndreaBorman it's because Ubuntu want you to use snaps instead. They do this by phasing out Deb support and synaptic so when you can't find anything via apt you'll just install a snap version.

    • @AndreaBorman
      @AndreaBorman หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@rayzer1981 I did try Ubuntu and you can install Deb packages as well. Yes I did have to install Synaptic and yes when I tried to install Firefox from the terminal it installed the Snap version. I think that's because the Snap version is given higher priority than the Deb one. Though I am sure you can change that in the settings which would be in the configuration files. When I removed Snap it broke the system. So if you are using Ubuntu you won't be able to remove Snap. The Gnome Software Center is good for finding and displaying Snaps and Flatpaks. Because otherwise it is difficult to find them in the terminal since they are not listed in Synaptic. But the Software Center is not good for finding Deb packages. I have Gnome Software Center On Debian because it's part of the Gnome desktop and it doesn't find a lot of things. And I don't have any Snaps Or Flatpak installed. Also if you install or remove something through Gnome Software Center it doesn't tell you what else is going to be removed or installed or even the name of the application. That's why I always use Synaptic if I want to find and install software. Synaptic is much better and also Gnome Packagekit which is better than Gnome Software or Discover. Though if you have got Flatpak or Snap then you need to have those software Centers since Synaptic and Gnome Packagekit only show Deb packages.

  • @josh-foss
    @josh-foss หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I do believe that there's been an update to the App Center that now allows it to install .deb packages. The only downside is you can't uninstall with it so the terminal or gdebi would still be required for that action.

    I ran into a significant problem with installing Steam via snap. Whatever drive Steam is installed onto is the only drive Steam can install games to. I read that Flatpak has this issue as well. I ended up installing using the .deb, and that allowed me to use my second hard drive for game storage.
    Another issue I had with snaps was when I was uninstalling the Steam snap. Boy, was that process slow. So slow, I thought it froze. I tried killing the uninstall, and that was also unresponsive. I moved from the GUI interface to terminal and killed the uninstall process and then used terminal to uninstall the Steam snap, and it froze again.
    I ended up having to purge Steam to uninstall the Steam snap.
    Edit: Steam also starts and runs faster with the .deb install.

    not sold on snaps I would probably use Linux mint or peppermint os (Debian based) as my daily driver if i could hook up my meta headset to it, last time i tried to get oculus software running with wine I was not very successful. but yeah windows 11 hates both my rx 7800 xt and the WiFi chip on my motherboard.
    Proton is very impressive and not needing to deal with microsofts bullshit and ignoring if you settings is defiantly a nice to have + its donation based so free unless your in a position to help which i probaly am.

    From the Arch wiki to the AUR package availability and everything in between.
