Today I’m going to talk about crocheting with only my none dominant hand and why it’s important to keep doing what brings you joy.
At first I had to use things I had and I came with this thing. Which is a chunky hook taped together with a regular hook.
In place of my right hand I can use my legs or armpit. I had to relearn the crochet movement with only using one hand and things like the magic circle and the slip knot using only my non dominant hand. I’ll show you how this works.
This has its limitations like changing hooks, it limits your project size and its not good to have your arm held like that.
A good friend saw these limitations and she was determined to do better. And then her brain child the crochet guillotine was born.
Size is not limited, it encourages my right hand to be involved, and with two turns of screws I can change the hook. I’ll show you how this works ....
I’m making purple baby like this for “Click for babies” (link in discipton) .........
What hobbies would miss if you lost the ability? Let me know in the comments below.
Antill next time..be kind to yourself and others.
On May 19th 2020 I had a hemorrhagic stroke which left me with aphasia, hemiparesis on right side, brain surgery and left in I.C.U. Well I made it out alive!!!!!I would like to invite you to my journey as I heal and deal ;-)P.S If you would like to join me on this journey please leave a comment below. This happened to a friend who was a phenomenal crafter and singer. Whilst her singing voice never returned she turned out the most intricate embroideries, beadwork, paintings, did gardening, decorating… in fact it just did not stop her. Her commitment was total and her quality of work was not diminished. What she accomplished with one hand put us to shame. Tku for sharing your journey. Inspiring.

My sister had a stroke 5 years ago. She has aphasia and lost the use of her dominant hand. She was a professional artist. She can paint with her non-dominant hand, but isn’t very motivated. She used to knit a little. I’m thinking it would be fun for us both to learn to crochet. I think it would feel good to her to learn a new craft. I wish your guillotine was available to buy!! Maybe she can try learning with the leg or armpit hold. Maybe I’ll try learning with just one hand to keep her company.
Thank you for being so inspiring!

Thank you for explaining and demonstrating. You're amazing. I was severely injured in my left non-dominant hand 10 years ago and it's been uphill, but I'm lucky that one and a half hands work (as long as its not too fiddly!) I used to play Piano, Viola, and various sized Recorders, for fun, but those and of course typing with more than one finger are all out. Take care of yourself ❤❤

I am sad and in awe. Sad that you experienced this medical situation. Glad that you are making progress, recovering from your stroke. I am in awe that you did not let this keep you from doing what you love. It may be slower, it may take longer, but you have met this challenge, in your recovery, head on. I love your crochet guillotine, it certainly is a helping hand for you. My other hobby, when I am not crocheting is beading. It would be very difficult to do, with the use of only one hand. I have subbed to your channel and hope for the best in your continued recovery.

Hi, thanks so much for making this video. I love to crochet, bake, scrapbook, sew and do cross stitch. My sister had a stroke and wants to take up crocheting again just like you. She also knitted before her stroke. Your friend was very clever when he/she invented the crochet guillotine. I am so glad that you can crochet again! Has your friend shared with others how to create a crochet guillotine so they can crochet too? I'd love to know. Thank you.

Thank you for this video. I had a stroke in 1989 and for a time could not do all the crafts I used to do. I have a Facebook group for Disabled people doing Crafts and I am pleased to say it is doing well as it has only been going 1 month. During a Zoom meeting the subject of pain and crochet came up and we talked about different ways to crochet. I have since taken a few hours to look for a video to share with the group and definitely your video is the one. Again Thank you from the UK. Best wishes Kate

I’m blessed with the ability to use both my hands, but did discover crochet through becoming paraplegic. Your positive attitude is uplifting. I’m now making winter items for the homeless, using my newfound crochet skills. It amazes me how you make it look so easy! Took me quite some time to learn with two hands. Your are amazing!

I had a stroke - prenatal, which gave me Cerebral Palsy (quadraparesis). I can do almost everything "normal" people can do because I've adapted to life with CP. However, knitting and crochetting has always been out of reach (because of the spasticity in my limbs/hands). I've only been able to do loom knitting because its less hand movements. But! I also never figured crochetting with one hand was possible. This is pretty cool! BTW: love the colour of your nails.
