My grandma lost control over her left hand after a stroke and knitting was her biggest hobby besides gardening. I will suggest this to her and hope that this way she can go back to knitting again. This would be a huge game changer in her life! 🤩
Best wishes to your grandma! The brain has amazing ways of reconnecting "the wires", and relearn how to do things that perhaps will help others, too. Please share her story as she gets comfortable!
You are so inspiring! I showed this to my daughter born without a left hand. She is always looking for ways to do whatever she wants, just in her own way. Thank you for sharing your story.
I was born with severe cerebral palsy in my right side, mild in my left leg, as an Australian I like to say I run like a drunk emu. I've always wanted to knit and crochet because my nana and my grandma both did it. But my hand would just scrunch up. This should make things easier. Especially with how popular crochet and knitting are now. She could start a little shop.
I broke my back when I was 4 and my mother told me, " if you have nothing to overcome you overcome nothing, but if you have great things to overcome you become great at overcoming things. Be an overcomer." You are helping others to be overcomers. Thank you for being you!
What an AMAZING woman. Here I am complaining about being put into a wheelchair and you are knitting ONE HANDED. I have no reason to complain. What an inspiration you are.
I too would occasionally succumb to a one minute self pity party. ( After falling down for the 4th time, my doctor confirmed that I had torn ligaments, a broken off bone tip and small fractures. Now I must wrap my ankle/foot, wear a brace and use a cane.) Though I'm slower than an upturned bottle of ketchup, I still have my foot. Pinned to my cork board is a 6 year old "Get Well" card from my wheelchair bound friend since childhood. She wrote, "Now I can beat you in a foot race" inside. 😷❤️ Take care and be safe.
@@pamelacraig2791 @Rose Martin thank you. 😅 My first Knitting project is completed. I knitted a scarf for a friend. LOL I learned how to rip out the stitches and start over. Knitting is a really good life lesson for paying attention to details.
@@rosemartin9312 thank you so much Rose for your encouragement. I achieved this goal on my bucket list. Now I’m looking for ideas on a next knitting project.
Honestly, I'm a knitter but this is inspiring beyond just knitting. With any type of health problem it's easy to feel all your limitations but it takes strength to think outside the box and work beyond them. What a smart and inspiring lady!
Dear Mary, I am so proud of you! Being a cancer survivor myself ( I had a soft tissue sarcoma and a thyroid cancer AT THE SAME TIME), I know what you have been through. But, instead of feeling sorry for yourself and complaining about life, you realize that you have the gift of intelligence and imagination and you can make things work for you, keep knitting, and enjoying the craft! Congratulations! Many years ago I was teaching a class in Rhinebeck, NY, where I had a student without a right arm (from birth) and she did learn Portuguese Knitting from me holding the needle under her arm as you previously tried. She did it. You are a true inspiration and give hope to so many in this world that do not see that life is a gift! Thank you! If you please email me privately, I will send you my book to you as a gift.
Mary you are truly an inspiration .My sister tried to teach me,the art of knitting as she made so many beautiful things herself, but I just couldnt do it. Im a good crocheter, so why can't I learn to knit? She has passed away now.
The grandchild who received the afghan knit after grandma’s arm was amputated must feel very loved. I hope she is able to pass on both the afghan and the story of how it was knit. What a special gift!
This is one of the most incredible videos I’ve watched on YT. As someone who crochets I’m blown away by your determination to learn how to continue your passion. I’m especially impressed by the research that you undertook to solve a complex problem! Amazing and inspiring!
The world needs more people like You, Mary! I'm a teacher in handicraft in Sweden. I will show my students this film. Pointing out that nothing is impossible! Thank You!
So inspirational that you turned your disability into a new ability. You never stopped to feel sorry for yourself, you learned how to work differently. What an incredible woman you are. ❤
I’m impressed. When i saw the video’s title, I immediately thought “knitting belt” and I wasn’t disappointed ! I hope you are doing well and continue to knit. You seem comfortable in front of a camera so should you ever wish to do a follow up, I’m sure you would have people interested. Be well.
Wow, what an intricate skill. I really admire how you used so many different knitting techniques and brought them together to create your own way of doing it. I hope there's a publishing deal in the pipeline for you!
My mother and grandmother taught me to Portuguese knit when I was a child. Thought it was the way Italians knitted since we were Italian. Thank you for showing me how to knit with one hand
Hi, another onehanded knitter here, even tho I have more arm left then you. If you want to use the single pointed needles, you could put them inbetween the legs. Its unlady like, but At least Im a warm unladylike lady. There is also the knitting sheath, for the 40 cm double pointed needles, which you also can hold inbetween the thighs. If you are one handed, the more horizontal the empty needle is, the better, i found. Clever how you tension the yarn, real clever!
As a huge crafter, I always wonder how I would manage my love of all things creative if I ever lost a hand. This is awesome. And I hope that you inspire people to find ways to keep doing the things they love.
I am a recreational therapist student and an avid knitter, thank you so much for sharing your story! It gives me hope that one day I may be able to help other amputees relearn to knit by using the methods you have suggested! Thank you so much!
Brilliant! I'm a crafter and at 71 I have always wondered what I would do if I was disabled. You have shown me determination wins the day. I pray you never have to go through cancer again. I had breast cancer a few years ago, so I understand. God bless you.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. You are amazing! Your grandchildren will cherish those afghans forever. God bless you! “It is your reaction to adversity, not the adversity itself, that determines how your life’s story will develop.” Dieter F. Uchtdorf
That Afghan blanket is truly beautiful! Extremely well done...putting two handed knitters to shame!! I am so sorry to learn of all the trouble you had with Cancer, and dreadfully sorry you finally had to have your arm amputated....without sounding flippant, it’s better that your arm went and that YOU are still here for your family and us! Beautiful colours your granddaughter chose, but my goodness you must have burnt the midnight oil to get that finished in time for her to take with her. I think your girls will always treasure them, as so much of “you” went into their creation, so when they go to sleep at night, it will be almost like you being there to tuck them in! When I was a child an elderly bedridden sister of our neighbor crocheted a beautiful blanket for me, which I still treasure to this day and I’m 70 very soon. The other sister used to knit beautiful cardigans and jumpers for me, but my favourite was what I called my ballet dress...knitted so the skirt part was flared and when I spun round, the dress flew out round me...I can still recall that exciting feeling, even now. Sadly I grew too big for ballet and have no idea what happened to my lovely dress. I was so lucky to have such kind and talented neighbours back then. Take care, and look after yourself..your so inspirational to so many! Good luck with future projects! Love and hugs from the U.K.! 🙋♀️😘☕️☕️💕💐
Wow this is incredible. I can only imagine how frustrating it may have been, not being able to just pick up / hold / move with your right hand. I’m so glad you are still knitting, the world is lucky to have you and your creations!
You knit. You knit the way people busy in the fields would knit, when they had to keep knitting while carrying something, or doing something else at the same time. You're doing what you love. That makes it awesome.
I LOVE that you were challenged to find a new way, and you did. God rest my mom’s soul, she had a stroke and lost the use of her right side. Many skills had to be altered. I’m so proud of you. You are a blessing. NEVER GIVE UP! Thank you for sharing
Fantastic that you can still knit after your operation and your tension looks so even. There are lots of people with two hands who can't knit as well as you!
I am so impressed ! I will never complain again about anything knit wise being too difficult. What a service you have done for so many people. I wish you only the best in all your endeavors ...thanks Mary
So amazing. You are certainly an inspiration, Mary. All the knitting groups are talking about you and sharing your video! We are all humbled and amazed. Best wishes and be well.
Miss Mary, you are absolutely remarkable. I'm just speechless, I would have never have thought you could knit with one hand. Good for you and your attitude is so positive, a great example.
You are the kind of people I admire most: spreading hope, the will of not let yourself get down and the inspiration to implement an idea that brings again joy to your life and others! Well done👍😍
I learned to crochet to help my right arm recover from a lesion, and doing it helps me to maintain average mobility on my hand. Makes me really glad that people with all kinds of mobility issues can turn to yarn as a hobby and as a therapeutic resort :)
Instead of wallowing in self pity, you picked yourself up and found a way to continue to do what you love. You are such an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for the reminder that we can succeed no matter how bleak things can become. All it takes is one little spark of inspiration.
I'm a Portuguese knitter and I am so happy that you found a way to continue doing what you're passionate about! Such a smart lady and so kind to share this with others who can benefit.
This is very impressive that the love of something was not going to leave your life easily. This brings hope to others which is truly a wonderful thing to share. We will always be grateful for such a wonderful video.
Mary, thank you for posting this inspiring video. I am glad you were willing to spend the time making it with your grandson, as I know this will, and already has, benefitted people. You are a very good instructor as well, very clear instructions, showing the process slowly with a thorough explanation, then demonstrating how you are able to knit with some speed, rhythm, and proficiency. Your grandson did a very nice job, putting together the video and the correct angles for viewing your knitting. I know you are a wonderful grandmother, too! Your beautiful smile at the end and the photo of your afghan, your granddaughter and you at the end is well done. Happy health and happy knitting, Beth
WOW! You are truly an inspiration. This was AWESOME. While watching your demonstration I was reminded of the saying “where there’s a will there’s a way”. You have definitely proved that. God bless you.
Love this Mary. I love how matter of fact and normal you show this to be. How lovely to have knit for your Grand daughter. An afghan made with love. I find my Grand children are very inspirational. Xx
You are an inspiration to anyone with the the use of only one arm and hand whether by amputation, stroke, or some other reason, along with everyone else. Please continue. Your work is beautiful and while I am sure all your grandchildren love and appreciate their afghans I think your granddaughter will especially treasure hers. My nana used to knit and I think crochet, but, unfortunately I don’t have anything she made me. My grandma used to knit as well and I think I have a very lacy baby blanket that she made for me unless it has gotten lost over the years and moves. May you have no further cancer or poor health. Gentle, safely distanced hugs to you my friend.
What a beautiful woman and her presentation is incredible. Thank you so much for bringing this information to people. This is so needed because people need to feel like there is hope after a challenge in their lives that may otherwise prevent them from enjoying a wonderful craft. Thank you!!!
This is wonderful Mary. One of my greatest fears as I age, is whether I will always be able to enjoy my knitting hobby. You have shown us that “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. All the best to you!
I like using a carabiner clip, since when I use the hook, it can fall off and I don’t like things around my neck. Thanks for the info, I broke my clavicle and just couldn’t figure it out! I have knitted Portuguese for several years! Well done!
Oh my Mary. You are an inspiration, and it’s hard to believe you knitted that huge Afghan with one hand. I call you a trooper,,, and nothing was going to hold you back from your knitting. You tried and you conquered. Bless you lovely Lady. ❤️🇨🇦
You are such an inspiration, I can't even begin to imagine how difficult it must have been in the beginning but you did it that Afghan is beautiful. You should be incredibly proud of yourself xx
You are an inspiration! I’m glad Portuguese knitting method is helping you continue enjoying to knit.. I’ve been using it for 5 years due to extreme arthritis in my spine and hands. It’s encouraging to know that if my future means the loss of mobility in one of my arms I can do what you’ve done.
Wow....you are so inspirational. I used to work with people who had strokes. Really wish I'd known these knitting tricks long ago. Brilliant video xx 🏴
This was a very awesome tutorial! I get bout OS arthritis that can incapacitate my hand, this is a great way to use my other hand. Thank you so much for making this video and sharing your wonderful creativity!
Wow, wow, wow, Are you an inspiration to all. Beautiful afghan. I don't knit or crochet but like watching others. You have overcome a huge obstacle and shared it. You are good teacher.
All I can say is fantastic. I really enjoyed watching you teach one handed knitting. You are a true inspiration. I hope to see many more videos from you in the near future.
Woohoo! So glad you were able to find and create adaptations to continue doing what you love, and that you're now able to share those ideas with others! Thank you for being a problem solver!
Excellent!....so inspiring! Years ago I almost lost my hand in a panel saw at work. I was just talking to my son about this... N I told him I don't know what I would do if I lost a limb...now I know!...if there's a will there's a way hey?!?!😀
You truly are an inspiration. It is one thing to tell someone they can do anything no matter how impossible it feels to do something you want to do. You went went above and beyond to prove it. I love your drive and determination to continue doing what you love. The blanket turned out beautiful! I am sure is very special to both of you.
You are amazing! How inspiring for others that you share your experience and how you've overcome seemingly impossible circumstances. Thank you. Next time I feel like complaining I'll think of you and not do it.
You are amazing! Beautiful Afghan, beautiful colors. You are a blessing to others, to teach them what you have learned to do with just one arm. I learned how you keep tension which I never heard of. Keep up the beautiful work and what you love. Continue to teach others your love for knitting. God Bless!
I honestly drew breath when I saw that photograph at the end! I'm currently practicing Portuguese knitting and get on okay with purling, however, I do struggle with the knit stitch but I will persevere especially after watching this video. If anyone is an amazing example of perseverance it's you and you have astounded me. I'm so thrilled to have come across you video. You are an incredible lady. Thank you for telling us your story and showing us your extraordinary skill.
This just proves that if you are determined enough to do something, then you will succeed, no matter what obstacles lie in your way. God bless you, you are a true inspiration. Happy knitting 😌❤xx
You're so amazing for not letting anything stop you! Thank you for sharing this with us 💜 I'm so glad you were able to find a way to keep doing something you love
This is an amazing love for knitting!! I am always interested in finding new ways of knitting , as an interest and because I have pain in my right thumb down to my wrist. I have considered the Portuguese and Shetland styles as an alternative but haven’t followed up on them. Your story touched my heart and I wanted to say thank you for sharing.
Beautiful afghan for your granddaughter! She is a very fortunate girl to have a wonderful grandmother like you. I love the way you figured out how to continue on with your craft.
This is great! Thank you! I have a sprained wrist in a cast now and want to keep playing with yarn. I can loom knit with one hand, but want to keep needle knitting. You are an inspiration.
This brought tears to my eyes. So inspirational. I have been looking for ways to one-hand knit when I do platelet donations. I do one-arm donations, so I have a hand free and a couple hours at a time during a donation. I have been reading books, but have PLENTY of projects to be working on. Thank you so much for sharing your story and method!
You are my new hero. I also have been knitting since I was 12. 73 now. I am sorry for your medical issue, but by doing this video you are an inspiration to many. Please keep this video on You Tube.
Mary, I love your positive attitude, and just 💘 ❤ 💜 💛 your calm way of teaching - I live by the saying "everyday is a school day", and at the age of 70 you have just taught me something new 😍. xx

My mom had a stroke. She was a crochet and sewing but I made a lap table to adapt to a knitting loom, she has since made full size blankets with then!
Baest wishes to you and your family

This awesome lady: *knits with one hand*
Wonderful teaching skills! Excellent explanations and beautiful knit work. Congratulations wonderful lady
She must have experienced because when starting it feels impossible
Not only did she figure out how to knit with one hand, but she did it by manipulating a 2-handed knitting style. What a legend.

What a way to stick with your passionate hobby! Thank you for being you and such a sweet soul!
This is wonderful Mary. One of my greatest fears as I age, is whether I will always be able to enjoy my knitting hobby. You have shown us that “where there’s a will, there’s a way”. All the best to you!
Hello there...
Your persistence in finding a way to continue enjoying your hobby is inspiring!
I like using a carabiner clip, since when I use the hook, it can fall off and I don’t like things around my neck. Thanks for the info, I broke my clavicle and just couldn’t figure it out! I have knitted Portuguese for several years! Well done!
“Necessity is the mother of invention”. You exemplify this ! I applaud you
So glad you found a way to continue doing something that brings you such pleasure. No doubt your works mean a lot to others!
I think that you are wonderful. God bless you, this is truly inspiring.

Very inspiring! So glad you were able to figure out how to keep knitting!
This is an amazing woman. Never say die, and keep on learning. Mary, you are an inspiration to us all.
Mary, you’re an inspiration and the reason I’m going to pull my knitting needles out!
Thank you so much for sharing I appreciate and respect your resilience, dedication and tenacity, your grandchildren are very lucky :)

Your are a real inspiration to overcome life's challenges and conquer! Thank you for not giving up hope and showing others ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
You are brilliant! You have a wonderful, matter-of-fact can-do spirit!
This is absolutely amazing!! How inspiring. All I can say is wow!
You are my new hero. I also have been knitting since I was 12. 73 now. I am sorry for your medical issue, but by doing this video you are an inspiration to many.
Please keep this video on You Tube.
You go girl! Always rethink things so that they work for you. ‘Can’t’ never accomplished anything.
