Reacting To Pitti Uomo Street Style | Pitti Uomo 95

  • Pitti Uomo, which occurs biannually in Florence, Italy, is one of the world's premier menswear trade shows. It attracts brands, designers, buyers, magazine editors, and the infamous, "Pitti Peacocks." For better (and worse), Pitti has become known as the place for amazing classic and dapper street style. In this video, I'm reacting to some street style slideshows--British GQ and Vogue--from the most recent Pitti Uomo 95.
    The peacock thing is something I want to touch on just briefly. With the culture of "me," "look at me," and "anyone can be famous" that social media (cough, Instagram) has bred, many people just show up, dressed in costumes, to try and get their photo taken. These people have no actual reason to be at the event--they just want to be seen.
    Some of, if not the most, blatant offenders of this, are so-called influencers. This is a term that I absolutely abhor--it's on about the same level as an "influencer" calling themselves a "Public Figure"--but one that has become accepted in marketing vernacular. The vast majority of these folks, have no vested (or, waistcoated?) interest in being at the event unless a brand has paid them to attend. But other than that, priority one is to get snapped by a street style photog so maybe they'll "blow up".
    It's disgusting. Being in the digital space for over six years and coming up when I did, I, know many of these people, though, thankfully, I can claim blissful ignorance of the "up-and-comers". I will say that the handful of guys, who I'd consider OGs along with myself, do, in fact, have something of value to offer, in their own ways. It wasn't driven so much by being famous as it was to share a perspective, passion, and POV with the world.
    I'm getting WAY off on a tangent here. Bottom line is that I feel some photographers have gotten hip to this, especially at Pitti. When you have folks like Robert Spangle shooting for British GQ--someone who actually knows who the real deal dudes are--you're going to get a more realistic view. I'd invite you to contrast that with the photos in the Vogue slideshow.
    Finally, I realize that I am not the most entertaining "reactor". It's not my style to be over the top and "perform" like that. I prefer to be more carefully considered. If you like that (and you've read this far) you are probably the right kind of guy for this channel!

    One thing about fashion week is that it is not the locals that are strutting their stuff/clothes/styles for that matter so you get the eschewed impression of what that particular city really represents in terms of style. Milan for example, those are foreigners who come for the fashion week whereas the real true Milanese dress so differently and has a style of their own which is unspoken that is not represented by the visitors.

    Something that I noticed to be quite popular, especially in the photos of GQ, dark brown suede seems to be making quite an entrance. I'd say a good portion of the outfits had some suede shoes incorperated. Which is nice, because suede doesn't get enough love. We've once talked about wearing a blazer with jeans. You mentioned it to be a little too formal, I however find it be one of the nicer looking business casual outfits a man can wear. Now comes my question, if I am to wear a blazer with dark denim and a knit tie, would it be too formal to wear a plain white linen pocket square? I would of course fold it in the classic manner. I'd love some insight.

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That would absolutely be acceptable. You really can't go wrong with a crisp white pocket square in any setting.

    19:40 - 45; Gent on left looks like he could be from New Mexico - I like the layering, without the pompon, though - and the baggy trousers, I prefer a more fitted style. The bandana does him well, though I couldn't do that. I thought pleats were non-grata? Also, not too annoyed by the Peacocks. I often enjoy seeing what the older gentlemen are wearing, as men's magazines usually only show under 25 year old male models. It is hard to get an idea of what I would look like in a suit if the model wearing it is too young to drink in most states. By seeing the older Peacocks, I can get a better grasp about what I can get away with style wise.

    • @hespokestyle

      Nope. Pleats are definitely cool. I've actually been getting them on all my trousers recently--even my wedding tux. Interesting point about the older gentlemen--and I agree. I'm applying the peacock designation primarily to the younger set, in this case.

    Isn't peacocks the whole point of pitti uomo though? I mean why do people go dressed up there? Ie what is the difference between a well dressed person and a peacock?

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pitti is known for the peacocks, but it certainly is not the point of the event. The point of the event is that it is a trade show. Because it focuses on menswear, people dress well. Some of those folks could be considered peacocks for their flamboyant style, but the peacocks I'm referring to are the wannabes (wannabe seen) who aren't a part of the event itself.

    I’m astonished that you would criticize the “patti peacocks” ; their is nothing profound about fashion. Clothes is superficial, and like an auto show it’s all just an amusing exhibition, a social event to entertain our selves. I enjoy it. We don’t have to like everyone’s sense of style, we can critique it, or homologate it.

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Listen, there are definitely the old school peacocks--people like Lino Ieluzzi and Alessandro Squarzi--and I have nothing but respect for them. That's their thing and they've been doing it forever. It's coming from a place of genuineness and honesty. In fact, they probably don't even know what a peacock is! The new breed of "peacock", however, I feel is motivated more by a thirst for fame than true and honest self-expression. It is Instagram's fault. I see some of the photos--current and past--and I know who some of these so-called "influencers" are. Many just go to try and get their photo taken, to try to be seen, just so they can say that that happened. That, to me, is obnoxious.

      He Spoke Style It does not agitate me. l my self am not very ostentatious, but I understand how frail the human ego is and it’s need for attention because we are social creatures. Your vitriol condemnation of the next generation of gentlemen has no merit. This exhibition of sartorial is refreshing to me in a world where so many young people today are always dressed down in activity and sporty clothing.

      Actually, not at all. The website and Instagram make up the bulk of the revenue we generate at HSS. Could we make a ton more if we sold our souls and didn't care about our readers', followers', and viewers' taking us seriously and valuing our stance on quality as well as only working with brands that are actually "on brand" for us? You bet. But I'd rather say no to opportunities to maintain my own and my brand's integrity rather than make a quick buck.

I know my approval isn't what you're after and is as significant as a single snow flake in Siberia. It must be said that people who are passionate about anything always look to meet and greet others with similar interests and show off their best(concours car shows, conventions, Baselworld)and it inspires others, others who are inspired by the colors, textures, patterns or just the atmosphere. Others are inspired to create, dress, photograph, or purchase. The peacocks, fashion week and even channel's like yours are all just as inspiring and shouldn't be looked down on

I don't like their style or posing either but I see them as bold, unique, quirky and eccentric but certainly not lame! My thumbs down was not for the content of your review but for the unnecessary rant against other men.. build up, never tear down!

    • @hespokestyle

      For me there's a difference between the OGs like Lino and Co. v. "influencers" dressing in costume and standing around just to get photographed. In other words, there are real Pitti peacocks and pretenders. The pretenders--i.e. influencers--will dress completely different the following week when it's all about "festival" style. That's not true style and that's what I'm railing against here. But I agree with you that the OGs are most certainly a part of the fabric of the event. That's who they are and that's how they've always dressed.

    I like alot about what you promote and share.Shurely you know what you are doing but one thing ı found a bit rude?I don’t like the look of the so called ‘’peacocks’’ and ‘’dandies’’ but isn’t everyone dressed up well to show they can dress well anyway?Even best of the best like Jo-ha,Niels holdorf or Guillaume Bo are there to promote who they are.Everyone including you has their pictures taken by others and later share online.Due to all respect what makes you any different than other people who might want to have their pictures taken?What if some random guy can come up with great style and new ideas.Why the limitation that only certain people can be there?You said they should take a huge step back about what they are doing with their life?Maybe their life is much better then yours and their only ‘’sin’’ is being at pitti cause its a different experience and in the meanwhile may God forgive having a Picture taken by request.Did ı miss a point?

    • @hespokestyle
      @hespokestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for the very thoughtful and, I might add, respectful comment, Arif. I guess I should have made a clearer distinction between peacocks and wannabes. For me, it comes down to intent. I have absolutely no problem with the old school peacocks (though they probably don't know the term or even care about it) like Lino Ieluzzi, Gianni Fontana, et. al. That is who they are and that is who they have been forever. Plus, they are there for a business-related purpose. I also have no issue with dandyism. I know people who dress that way and they're wonderful folks--it's coming from a place of honesty and genuineness. The thing I take issue with, which I've addressed in a few other comments here, is the faux peacock (the fauxcock? Did I just invent a new term?) those people, generally the so-called "influencers" or wannabe influencers, who literally stand around just to be seen and photographed. They have no reason to be at the actual trade show unless they're getting paid for a project. If your goal is simply to try and be famous and you do not have any real knowledge or perspective to offer gained from honest to goodness experience, then absolutely, I think you should rethink what you are doing with your life. This is a bigger cultural problem now and we can blame it on people like Kim K and platforms like Instagram. In one sense, it's nice to have that sort of democratization. But, on the other hand, particularly on Instagram, ANYONE can look a certain way--just get a good photog and learn how to pose a bit and edit your photos--but I wager, no I KNOW, that the vast majority of these people are charlatans.
      As for me, I have been sharing my personal style journey online for the past six years now. All along the way, I have attempted to learn as much as I could about menswear, about watches, about whiskey, about cigars, not to be an expert, but to be educated as much as possible on the topics I am talking about and sharing with people. I don't claim to be an expert an any of those things. That approach has resonated with people. From the start, what I wanted with HSS was for other people to look at it and think, hey, I can do that too, it's approachable and not pretentious. My intent was to share my journey and to document my passion for learning as much as possible about the topics I was covering. When I partner with a luxury watch brand, for example, I do a ton of research so I can be an intelligent brand ambassador--one that HQs for those brands want--not someone who thinks an escapement is a new movie starring The Rock. I've met so many of these people during my time in this business and it is really disappointing. It's all about them, not their followers or the brands they are promoting.

      It's taken me a while, but I think what you gain with maturity, especially if this is the kind of dapper style you like, is an appreciation for the simple, the classic, the less is more approach. It becomes less about "making an impact" and more about the finer, subtler details. What mill is the cloth from? Who is the maker of the suit? Can you tell just by the shape of the shoulder? Drilling down into that, you start to become more of a connoisseur and less influenced by the superficial.
