Mostly influence by gta crap.. And i remember watching godfather once.. And was so intrigued with the way they dress.. All suits and formal looks.. And I dive straight into formal wear.. I made mistakes here and there when i was younger but learned from it and keep on improving my style.. Needless to say.. I am really into classic menswear now.. Most of us are not trying to stand out but rather we are just living our lives in a way that makes us feel happy. Who is to say that one type of clothing is any more strange than the other?
It's also kind of rude to write off other peoples lifestyles by calling their style costumes or that they focus too much on their subgenre. Just because people are different doesn't make them strange, it makes them unique. :)

A similar transformation has happened to me, although I'm a few levels less formal in my style. However I do have an acquaintance who was and still is associated with the metal community, although he's gone into politics and has been mayor/royal secretary for a time so seeing his formal style evolution was interesting for me to follow. It's really interesting how noticeable it is when someone genuinely likes this style and knows the rules, compared to only doing it out of necessity, especially in politics with people wearing plain black suits etc.

I wish I had a foto from one of my go to styles in 2008/2009, white shirt, flared jeans (a little bit to long and with a high rise) and my long long hair in my natural color without any kind of hairdo, openly flying in the wind. I often got told, I looked like a kid from the 70ies. Loved it!! Now my hair got chopped off a few years ago and my outfit is very different.😄😉 I couldn't decide as a young adult, who I was. So I heard Rock and Punk, dressed normal or like a kid from the 70ies and let my hair grow as long as it could get. 😄 Maybe I will start someday and wear vintage, but for now, I really love my stuff that I now have, for example my green and black stripped knitted sweater that's a little bit Punk and my nice warm boots. Maybe when I could sew properly, my outfits will change, because I have the possibility to get something in my size and price range and maybe alter it. But until then, I will enjoy my stuff I already have.

Similar transformation here. I've had long (and very curly) hair for six years throughout school. I cut it off in my graduation year (just a month after my "Maturaball", timing is not my greatest strength). It was around that time, that I bought my first three-piece-suit with a pocket square. But I really got into powerlifting/strongman the following years, so I just couldn't find fitting suits anymore. Thanks to you I found Hockerty though, which was the real start for my classic menswear/vintage journey. Now I mainly wear pre-1950s-style work and student wear (1930s especially, due to their roomy pants). Even my gym attire has switched more to a vintage-inspired outfit to complement my handlebar moustache. So take this as a big thank you for playing a large role in my style journey.

Why are the terms 'goth' and 'metalhead' mixed so much. Those two groups are listening to completely different types of music. I can tell, because I know both scenes: There is also a big difference in fashion and in values, apart from both being nerds. There has been some confusion in the time of the early 2000s with terms like "gothic metal" coming up and with some people mixing goth music with things like 'medieval' rock. That may have led to a picture that misleads strangers to think these things belong together but there is no such thing as gothic metal. I've listened to so called 'gothic metal' bands like 'Type o Negative' or 'Tiamat' and they are just metal bands.
Alright, enough of this. That was a nice video. Hope, I will improve my style just as much along with my aging (I'm in my early 20s now) and be able to afford a few nice suits in the future.

I'm so pleased you showed the pictures; putting aside the physical pain it causes you: we've all wore shocking (still wear? hopefully not;-)) combinations. I've been on a sartorial journey over the past 3 or 4 years and I now know that classic men's style is firmly where I want to be going.
What is clear from the images you've showed here, is that it is often takes several years to gather the knowledge and know how, and the clear sartorial direction to be able to pull off men's classic style.
I have suits that I bought a year or 2 ago - most of which are vintage/second hand/ thrift shop and modified by a tailor, that I am not really 100% happy with. I like the way you describe your journey and that mistakes will be made and even 'backward' steps made. I think this makes for a better and deeper understanding of what really works.
Again, I enjoy the content and hope to see more like this in the future. Keep safe, as they say - but that's important! I'm self-isolating abut may don a Spring jacket when I'm able to buy a loaf ;-)

I think a good way of looking at it is this: the best way to live a happy life when it comes to dressing, is to dress in whatever way brings you most happiness at the time. As we change through our lives, so does the aesthetic/look that brings us the most happiness, and that's okay. So there's no reason to cringe if you were dressing goth/emo/lolita/prep/anything in the past. Just because that wouldn't make you happy today doesn't mean it is embarrassing; it made you happy at the time and that's what matters. I've spent a lot of time with older folks and one thing I've learned from them is that all the worrying about what's cool or refined or whatever ends up seeming sillier and sillier the more perspective you gain in life. So just dress in whatever way you can that will make you happiest and don't worry about the future you, because there's no one "right" direction in your outfitting journey, just a lot of fun islands you can visit and even carry souvenirs as you keep traveling.

You appear to be quite fond of black neckties over the years.
Continuing in this vein, black and white photography may influence the vintage style of today. Certainty many clothes, particularly outer garments, would have been dark for practical reasons in the age of coal especially among the less affluent, but I suspect that vivid colours would have been present if only as accents. Antique and vintage upholstery and drapery have a subdued pallet, however here time and sunlight are the cause. On disassembly the original colours were often found to be rich and bright. Victoria's mourning had a substantial influence on all fashion in the UK, but I was under the impression that subsided by the end of the Great War.
Perhaps you have some insight on this subject. Many thanks.

Dude, I have watched the first 4 minutes of your video and might I suggest less trash talking about your high school self? I mean, seriously, we all at any time think that high school us didn't have their shit together, because... none of us did. I guarantee if your back-then-girlfriend looked at the very same picture today, she'd point out 107 things about her outfit and makeup that weren't up to par and say "But at least my boyfriend looked good, so I had that going for me."
"He" had it in him to become you, so... I guess he was doing alright? (Sorry, I just don't like people badmouthing themselves XD I will get back to the video now.)

Hello Niklas, I just discovered your channel and this was the first video that was recommended. I am also a metalhead and in the past 5 years have been discovering classic menswear and how to put together different outfits. My interest actually began with boots, since I wanted to buy some quality leather boots for going to metal concerts, and started to learn what are the main features to look for. From then on, it was all the way to the rabbit hole. I still have my long hair (not cutting it anytime soon), wear earrings on and off, have lots of metal t-shirts; but also have some many dress shirts, a bespoke suit, and a growing collection of classic shoes out of which 2 are shell cordovan (one of them of course a pair of boots lol). Learning about style and menswear have made me more conscious of how to show part of myself in a fun and versatile way, while investing in quality items and vintage stuff. I am happy to know that there are more like me on this journey for self-expression. All the best from Peru!

Nice to see a fellow metalhead who has gotten into suits, dressing well and being well groomed.
Though I'm still more metal in my general appearance. Long hair and mostly black outfits. (I'll never cut my hair unless I start to go bald)
I get told I look like I should be in Akercocke a lot. Though unlike theirs, my suits fit lol.
I do break a lot of classic menswear style "rules" though. As I feel they are dumb for me personally. Such as not wearing black suits.
Since I am still very much goth at heart, that rule is one I will NEVER adhere to. People who say that it looks like funeral attire have no creativity in their style.
Suits with stripes or patterns or wearing the suit with the right accessories can really separate the look from that.
One of my favourite outfits is a black pinstripe 3-piece double breasted suit worn with a burgundy tie, white shirt, white pocket square with burgundy trim and oxblood shoes.
I look amazing in that outfit and its the one I get most complements in. I also have a dark charcoal herringbone suit that looks practically black that I love too.

I have long hair (don't plan on cutting it) but wear mostly 1920s inspired garb, so I try to make it fit without changing too much. My phillosophy is to basically make everything else in my outfit period appropriate (or as appropriate as possible) but just assume I just happened to be a long-haired dandy or something lol

I'd love to dress my spouse like you, but am not sure he can pull it off! Specifically, I want to put him in one of your double breasted waistcoats where the buttons are more like a V than a straight line. Hmmmm... wanting it to work, but unsure. They are stunning on you, but you are slimmer. Guess I'll have to make one for him and find out!
    Thx for all your inspiration.
