The small door is called a wicket gate. They existed for several reasons. They could be opened and closed more quickly. It was also easier to control entry as only one person could enter at a time. An example of a use would be you close the gates for the evening. If anyone shows or leaves after rather than open the big gate you just open the wicket gate.
I also imagine it to come in handy in case of negotiations with enemies. Instead of opening the big gate and exposing a weak point to the enemy, you could step out, get the parley over with and get back in. Easier to defend.
@@patross60 This is a significant part of the reason. Wicket gates were for convenience but could be forced open. Making it smaller than even the average height made it almost impossible to properly fight through so you had someone waiting with a heavy weapon to bash them as they tried to force it. Same reason for the construction of castle tower stairs. They were designed to make it MUCH harder to fight upward than downward for people with a dominant right hand. Medieval fortress designers had a looooong time to perfect their craft.
The little door is a sallyport. It was used to allow people in and out of the castle without having to open the big doors every time. It was also used to send out soldiers during a siege to conduct night attacks and counterattacks, hence the term "sally forth."
He mentioned how much Adam Ant looks like a young Billy Crystal. I remember Billy Crystal doing a comedy music video where he dressed up as Adam Ant complete with the British sailor belly shirt
In Germany, the small door was used as a nighttime security device after city gates are closed. Anyone wishing to enter in late had to crawl through, putting themselves in a vulnerable position to guards who could easily question and quickly kill an unwanted outsider. I've also heard of this being called The Eye of the Needle, in reference to the Biblical quote.
Big door is for wagons and horses. Also, just to look imposing. Small door for people on foot. It's very short so you have bend down so the guards can whack you in the back of the head if you weren't invited in.
Man, 80s and 90s Charles Band was PEAK! His stuff was so good. I'm sure Good Bad Flicks knows about it, but the book "It Came From the Video Aisle" is an awesome book all about Charles Band, Empire, and Full Moon.
Tiny door in Big Door, it was because big door to heavy oponned all the time and big door is horses and big group of people. Tiny door is for one or maybe two people and day to day use.

3:04 Tiny doors in the big doors are common among firehouse, hangars, and bay doors in general, and it would seem castles. Just a much more ergonomic and easy way to pass through said large doorways designed for bigger vehicles. Less wear and tear on heavy duty hinges I'd imagine too. Great video as always.
I've never seen it but I knew right away those were top-notch John Carl Buechler effects. It's a wonder he made so many awesome creatures on those lower budgets. Bless him. One of his earlier jobs was on Mausoleum (1983) where he designed a wonderful female demon with little demon heads for tits and that's how it kills some victims. I’ve been trying to remember the name of this movie for YEARS! The only thing I remembered about it was the demon disappearing from the painting and coming to life. Couldn’t even find any info by Googling!
I think Cassandra was based on Bananarama. Their drinking was so legendary it inspired Absolutely Fabulous. Also: So Adam Ant is the devil in this and his ex-girlfriend is an evil snake priestess in another film
This one slipped past me at the time, but I love the peak 80's look of it. I also love how back then "stocky" was the same thing as fat. No being big unless its with roided out muscles!
I was trying to figure out who was playing "Cassandra Castle" [she looked familiar] Then you mentioned the a-ha video & I said "That's where I know her from!" Her name is Bunty Bailey. Another great video, just wanted to tell you that "I love your channel".

The big door is for horses. The little door is for regular use. We still use similar double doors on garages, sheds, and barns. Old fire stations like in Ghostbusters had them for the ladder trucks.
Each time you show the castle lady singing she reminds me so much of the pop singer Sia, but before she came to America, back when she sang without hiding her face like on her first couple albums
The reason for the small door in big door is the same as why you have to pull up those pins to open the both sides of a double door; sometimes something bigger than a single person needs to enter.
And here I was thinking wow, the VJ from Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is playing another VJ, he's really good at it...well no wonder, he was an actual VJ and DJ XD
The small door is a wicket gate or just wicket. They were built into gate walls of towns or castle walls outside. The big doors were for several people going out or to let through wagons. The wicket was one person wide and was for a few one or a few people. Being easier to open for small foot traffic and to also allow small foot traffic through during siege. You didn't want to have the big heavy doors open while being attacked.
Big doors are heavy to open. Europe builds solid stuff. A door is made of thick and solid wood with thick and solid steel braces. Opening the miniature variant is way mor convenient 😅

hahahaha, that's not even the same car exploding at 4:56; they stopped in Ford Sierra and then detonated some old (probably defunct) station wagon I honestly can't recognize.
Okay, the tiny door inside the big door thing is because the big door is opened for major events that will have a large number of people going in and out, while the little door is just for individuals and small groups. Hey, it takes a lot of effort to open and close the big door, and it'll let a lot of heat in/out when it gets opened too. Castles like that don't have central heating and air, so you've got to do what you can to keep the temperature under control.
The "little door in the big door" is a Sally port. (3:04) Well, I know that in (larger) castles, smaller doors were easier to open than the big honkin' ones which were fortified for defense. But this one seems super tiny and the big door not so heavy. Maybe it was built later in the same style in mimicry of how they used to do it? 🤔 EDIT: On further examination, the big door does look pretty thick.
