What a fantastic story and it goes a long way to explain how you're able to fit so much cogent information into your reviews. Incredibly interesting to find all that out about you especially when I was a very happy customer of The Gadget Shop in my formative years and it was always a highlight of a trip into town.
I've already been subbed to you for months now and I had no idea you had that much experience in the business of selling and developing gadgets! You are one impressive guy!
Your channel is right up my street, or alley as the idiom goes in the US. What I most appreciate is that, unlike most other EDC channels and sites, is your through and thoughtful analysis highlighting truly useful tools. That is coming from a tool consumer who has worn a watch since age 6 and carried a folding knife since age 8 doing chores on the farm. EDC and being prepared, although not necessarily identified in those terms early on, has meant survival and success in my journey though live as well, from farm work and outdoor activities on the high desert growing up, to the USMC, including tours as mountain warfare instructor and data communications technician. And then a long career in tech, from hardware to consulting. My office was often in my pockets, on my belt or in some kind of bag over my shoulder. And from you I’m learning of kit I didn’t even know I needed.
Although I regrettably missed the opportunity to visit your store while it was operational in the UK, I must express my appreciation for your unique contributions as an EDC, gadget, and gear reviewer. It is noteworthy that you are the sole individual from the UK whom I consistently follow, and I applaud your accomplishments. Well done, John.
When I first ran across this channel (trying to figure out what to pick out for my first Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, at a fairly advanced age), I was hooked. There was something about this presenter which indicated a very high intellect, a high degree of professionalism, excellent communication (clearly conveying what's important, following George Orwell's rules for clarity), and an entreprenurial attitude (there were clues here and there). The presenter also conveyed honesty, not in a small part due to the genuine passion for thus subject matter - he does not seem like the type to promote a poor brand for some extra pocket money. Little did I know how incredibly accomplished Jon Gadget was until I saw this video just now. I feel a little smug that I recognized some of his traits earlier. He's likely too busy to see this, but this channel has become a staple of mine, and I have grown to admire a stranger in a far off country for his commitment to such excellence and for providing so much value to those of us who want to simplify our lives. Oh - I bought the WorkChamp and the Huntsman (and the latter tends to be my EDC; other than a Phillips screwdriver, it's got everything I need; the scissors are my most used tool).
Thank goodness I'm not the only person OCD about EDC! LOL I can think of no other individual more qualified to produce a channel such as this, and it's so wonderful to see the passion for gadgets that you share with your subscribers! Anyone else would be on a beach or a golf course full time; but, the most successful among us can never truly slow down! :) What an accomplished life, a life well-lived. All I wanted was a channel which covers all aspects of EDC,and here it is ,concise clear and catering to everyone from the budget conscious to the more affluent of us ,perfect. I had subscribed to other channels,not realising this one existed,however now I only subscribe to this channel
The funny thing is I have come into your story from a reverse angle. Being very much interested in all things EDC drew me to your TH-cam channel in the first place; however, after following you for a significant period of time, I find you are responsible for some of my favourite shops in my younger years (and those that have put me in this very situation to type out this comment)! The Gadget Shop and Red5 provided respite on those busy Saturdays from yet another visit to a shoe shop or another clothes shop - with the line 'leave me here, I am fine looking around this gadget shop!' Keep doing what you are doing - I thoroughly enjoy your relaxed but informative style as I continue on my pilgrimage to search out the Holy Grail of EDC...
Well dang me! My flabber is gasted. My jaw is dropped. 😮 I couldn't believe it when The Gadgetshop opened in Nottingham Victoria Centre. I've always been a fan of EDC and suchlike but not so much the knives as I cannot legally (UK) own what I really want, so I just won't settle for pish instead. Awesome stuff Jon. Love your backstory Jon. Must say you’ve inspired me to have a collection of specially collected EDC kit if you will in each of my cars, my wife car and both my sons cars and I’ve loved doing it. I also now have a gadget-inspired and seemingly ever-growing collection of Leatherman tools as well as a new love of Victorinox tools, which I’d stopped looking at over the years (I’m a 66y physician in the NY suburbs). Wow! I had no idea. I'm glad I bothered to watch this back story of your work in gadgets, Jonathan. I've long been a gadget minded guy, and one to improvise a lot for solutions... MacGyver being my all time hero and inspiration. I have "MacGyvered" myself out of difficult spots on a number of occasions. My mantra also is... "be prepared!" And take what little, casual measures you can during the course of life to improve your preparedness standing. I started watching EDC videos several weeks ago, and I’ve watched tons of content by at least 10 channels. After that time, this is the only EDC channel I’ve subscribed to. I say this even though there are some very big TH-cam EDC channels that match my demographic more closely than this one-IMO Jon Gadget simply has the better content. Your product suggestions/reviews resonate the most with me, and your ideas for kits are the most sensible and clever. This channel is also considerably more budget-conscious than average, while still balancing quality. For many channels, price is an afterthought. Even though my state has no knife restrictions at all, I really like that this channel is much less focused on dedicated knives compared to pretty much every other EDC channel out there. Knives are cool, but SAKs/multitools are far more useful and practical for EDC. Keep up the good work, can’t wait to see more!

Well Jon, I am so happy I saw this AFTER I have watched so many of your reviews... I got to know you first, and truly like your videos... I always thought you knew what you were taking about.. Now after watching this video, you confirmed what I already knew.... As a police officer that was at the WTC in 93 and then again in 2001, I fully understand being ready to think outside the box... the last event I had to work was super storm Sandy.... Again, Be prepared always. I am now planning my second motorcycle trip to Alaska, this time from Key West to Prudhoe Bay... the tips I learn from you on equipment will be a great help. I used to hassle my parents to take me to The Gadget Shop every time we went out shopping. So among other things I have you to thank for hours of fun blasting unsuspecting customers with an Air Zooka, then hiding behind the shelves while they patted their heads and looked around in bewilderment. Been watching for a while now. Was always a fan of The Gadget Shop when I worked at the Trafford Centre as a projectionist at the cinema there. Spent a far bit in there including buying the zapper game thing. Which we all played up in the projection booth.

Getting new subscribers is important of course, but getting a reliable viewer base is more important, in my opinion. And this video sure helps to establish a connection with you for many people who will remain loyal viewers 🤓
The holy trinity? Victorinox, Leatherman and Maglight. Three items I had nearly 40 years ago and never having heard of EDC then. Sad to say Maglight doesn't appear to have kept up with the changes. Great Story Jon, keep up the good work, but of course it isn't work if it's what you love.

I like your channel as it shows good quality items at good price points. Some of the other youtubers show ridiculous priced things. Wow! I had no idea. I'm glad I bothered to watch this back story of your work in gadgets, Jonathan. I've long been a gadget minded guy, and one to improvise a lot for solutions... MacGyver being my all time hero and inspiration. I have "MacGyvered" myself out of difficult spots on a number of occasions. My mantra also is... "be prepared!" And take what little, casual measures you can during the course of life to improve your preparedness standing. Your experience and expertise is impressive and so I'm subscribed and eager to learn from you, as well as contribute back when I can. Cheers!
I started watching EDC videos several weeks ago, and I’ve watched tons of content by at least 10 channels. After that time, this is the only EDC channel I’ve subscribed to. I say this even though there are some very big TH-cam EDC channels that match my demographic more closely than this one-IMO Jon Gadget simply has the better content. Your product suggestions/reviews resonate the most with me, and your ideas for kits are the most sensible and clever. This channel is also considerably more budget-conscious than average, while still balancing quality. For many channels, price is an afterthought.
Even though my state has no knife restrictions at all, I really like that this channel is much less focused on dedicated knives compared to pretty much every other EDC channel out there. Knives are cool, but SAKs/multitools are far more useful and practical for EDC.

Well Jon, I am so happy I saw this AFTER I have watched so many of your reviews... I got to know you first, and truly like your videos... I always thought you knew what you were taking about.. Now after watching this video, you confirmed what I already knew.... As a police officer that was at the WTC in 93 and then again in 2001, I fully understand being ready to think outside the box... the last event I had to work was super storm Sandy.... Again, Be prepared always. I am now planning my second motorcycle trip to Alaska, this time from Key West to Prudhoe Bay... the tips I learn from you on equipment will be a great help. The Gadget Shop in the Trafford centre used to be my favourite shop when I was a kid, good times!
I used to hassle my parents to take me to The Gadget Shop every time we went out shopping. So among other things I have you to thank for hours of fun blasting unsuspecting customers with an Air Zooka, then hiding behind the shelves while they patted their heads and looked around in bewilderment. Fond memories. So thank you for all the gadgets, and now the great and thoughtful gear reviews.

Been watching for a while now. Was always a fan of The Gadget Shop when I worked at the Trafford Centre as a projectionist at the cinema there. Spent a far bit in there including buying the zapper game thing. Which we all played up in the projection booth.

@@JonGadget The repeat was a good idea. I can see from the comments that even though you had the other trailer for months, many viewers didn't see it until now. Getting new subscribers is important of course, but getting a reliable viewer base is more important, in my opinion. The holy trinity? Victorinox, Leatherman and Maglight. Three items I had nearly 40 years ago and never having heard of EDC then. Sad to say Maglight doesn't appear to have kept up with the changes. Great Story Jon, keep up the good work, but of course it isn't work if it's what you love.
