How to Clean a Hoya Carnosa Compacta Hindu Rope

  • HI Guys,
    It's cleaning time again. My Hoya Carnosa Compacta Hindu Ropes were very dirty. I find the easiest way to clean them is to wash. Make sure they are bone dry and have not been watered in a while before you attempt this, and then don't water them for a couple of weeks after.
    I used Castile soap with tea tree and a drop of neem oil.

    My favourite plant too!!! And I have 180 to pick from!!! I remember a Hindu rope in the office at my first job, I took a cutting, that was 20 years ago. I don’t have that cutting anymore, but it’s always been my favourite plant. I have a few in my home now, I just shower them off in the bathtub. But I like the soap idea in your sink.

      Aww, a fellow rope lover 💚 if I washed mine more often, a shower would probably do but I leave them so long they need the soap to shift the dirt 🤪🥴

    Hi! I have a nice electric sprayer that really gets into all the crevices. It’s so important to give the leaves a bath. And I love tea tree and peppermint soap for pest prevention

    💚 my favourite plant too! I’m on the west coast (BC lower mainland) and they are VERY hard to find!! I have 3 little pots of these hoyas and can’t wait for them to grow long and beautiful (very impatiently watching them every day for new growth - soooo slow. 😳). Thanks for those tips on how to clean them - once mine get long enough to droop over the sides of their pots 😆👍

    Do you dry every crease and fold in the leaves? I always worry the water will get trapped and rot the leaves.

      No, I just let it dry naturally. I guess you could use cold air on your hairdryer if you are worried.

    I always try a more environment friendly approach as well when getting rid of pests but often it doesn't completely get rid of the problem and I have to use an insecticidal soap which does the trick. Since we are not eating the plants in any way and they are indoors and not getting into the outdoor environment, I don't feel so bad about using the soap. Sometimes, its the only way to halt an infestation. Thanks for the vid! 🙂

    Thank you. I just got my rope plant from my Aunt who had it for 25 years. The ropes on it are very long. About 6 of them. I think it is trying to die out. I was wondering if I could get some Ideas in order to keep it alive or can I cut some of it off to try and root some before it dies. I can't transplant because it is so intertwined in roots and I am afraid to try and pull any of it apart. Any suggestions appreciated.

    • @jungleflowerscanada5384
      @jungleflowerscanada5384  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would take cuttings as insurance. It must me beautiful of its 25 years old. Would you be able to put it in a larger pot, if you remove from the pot check the roots to make sure they are healthy. If so, just add fresh soil to the larger pot without disturbing old roots.

    Hi. Great video. I just received my first Hindu rope as a gift. It’s a little time yet. Should I clean and water it since I’ve just gotten it home only yesterday? I didn’t know if I should water it yet or not and now I’m scared of pests in it from the nursery. Are they visible? I’m a new plant Mom so just learning. Thanks for any advice.

    • @jungleflowerscanada5384

      You could spray it with End_all just to make sure it's bug free, that's a good insecticide for plants. Check the soil, it if feels damp I wouldn't water it until it's dry. Typically I water my hoya every 7 to 10 days. I don't saturate as.they don't like to be too wet. If you plan on cleaning them like I did, make sure they are completely dry. You can buy a watering gauge, they are only around $10 and are very helpful for new plant parents.

    Thank you so much for showing how you clean these! About how often do you water? I’ve found in my 6 inch pot I can see some roots and I have a stem that the leaves are wrinkled and a bit soft.. is this from over watering? I’ve only watered it twice some I’ve got it about 3 weeks ago..
    Do you place a fan on them after you clean them? 💚

    • @jungleflowerscanada5384
      @jungleflowerscanada5384  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I clean them twice a year or if they look particularly dirty. I'm a light waterer so I water them lightly once a week, less in the winter but what your doing is fine also. Wrinkled leaves are usually a sign of them needing to be watered but I have had situations where leaves wrinkle for no apparent reason. If you think this is the case, try putting it in a plastic bag to increase the humidity until they perk back up.

    Mealy bugs lay eggs in the soil so besides cleaning the leaves, if you wanna eradicate them you have to change the soil completely (if you knew that already then my apology), 🙂
