  • Mitsubishi may not be making a comeback to India, but the legacy it left, particularly with the Pajero, remains cherished. The Mitsubishi Pajero, with its 12 Dakar Rally victories, has become a global icon in the off-roading world. In India, it was a Bollywood favourite long before the Q7 and GLS were even on the drawing board. It still enjoys a cult following, with owners going to great lengths to keep these icons on the road.
In this special episode, we honour the lifecycle of the Mitsubishi Pajero and Montero in India. Ed Sirish Chandran explores the rich history and triumphs of the Pajero in the Dakar Rally, highlighting the features, drivability, and robustness that made it legendary. We take the Pajero GLX, Pajero SFX, and two generations of the Montero (rebadged as Pajero for India) for a spin, reflecting on their legacy and enduring appeal.

As a Pajero SFX owner, i am extremely happy to see this episode. I have been asking for it for some time now. Thank you Evo India. The reason I bought the Pajero was because it has character. The same cannot be said about most of the cars being sold in India now. People still respect the Pajero when they see one on the road. In fact, it has been a conversation starter ever since i bought it. A triumph of solid engineering.

I learned a lot of new stuff I never knew in this video....and I also think with everything being stuck into one big screen and manufacturers trying to cut costs on several aspects, we are slowly loosing that character that cars from pre 2012-2013 has. Oh, one more thing about the Pajero SFX... Since I got it and have been driving it, this SUV has never let me down. Maybe it’s good luck for me... Even though it’s a 2009 model, it gives great mileage (despite weighing 2155 kg and having a 2800 engine). I really like my Pajero. Recently, I restored the entire Pajero... repainted it and did some mechanical work... the engine and transmission are smoother than before. Actually, it’s an emotion... it’s not like any SUV that everyone drives these days, like the Thar or Fortuner. Driving it gives a different level of attitude... I drove it continuously for 1500 km, and wherever I stopped, many people tried to learn about it. I don’t like any SUV other than this one... I don’t think there’s any that can match it.
A true off-roader with luxury space... it’s my family’s favorite too...
But in the last 2 minutes of this video, I really felt like crying... knowing that this car will never come again...

It was my dream SUV in my childhood/teenage. I had many postcards images of Pajero back then as no internet boom was there in those times. In my childhood I used to dream that one day I will buy one but unfortunately the market was much dominant by Toyota and it didn't make sense to buy Pajero for the price offerings. Still today we all Pajero fans have a soft corner crush on it. On my way to office I daily see a Sliver Pajero SFX parked and I slow down to a bit just to admire that bond of love for Pajero.

I agree with some points but not with others. I have a 2009 model PAJERO SFX, and believe me, it is a very smooth car. It easily touches 160 km/h, and in the city, it gives a mileage of 7-8 km/l, which goes up to a maximum of 12 km/l on the highway. Initially, in the first two gears, the engine remains noisy, but after that, it becomes quite smooth and vibration-free. This is my car; I don't know about other Pajeros. I bought it second-hand for 2.5 lakhs in 2019, and now my SFX is fully restored. I recently drove nonstop from Mumbai to Lucknow in one day. I didn't feel any fatigue while driving, and I didn't even realize when I crossed 1500 km. I was actually sad that the trip ended so quickly. I love my Pajero SFX.

after watching this video I understood 2 things
    1. Maruti Suzuki gave an opportunity and possibility to drive a car for normal middle class family, which is still a huge thing for most families in India.
    2. Toyota - gave us the best opportunity to have fun with cars/ SUVs/ MPVs at a reasonable price for the value and fun they were offering .
Esp Innova I can't thank Toyota enough it is seriously most VFM Car/MPV India could ever get ... there still isn't a replacement for Innova even from Toyota.
Fortuner when launched was literally a dream vehicle for its capabilities and at the price which they were offering.
    Suzuki & Toyota 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Last but not least, last segment about Mitsubishi was pure goosebumps ... thanks a lot Sirish for sharing OG stories about Mitsubishi.

Beautiful video man❤ may be its better that Mitsubishi isn’t coming back to India, the one we knew and loved is long gone even internationally, their ethos and spirit aren’t same anymore, its better to have great memories of a brand rather than them coming back and spoiling it entirely.
Lancers, pajero , outlanders and montero still lives as fond memories of childhood, later down the line all these brands and love for cars made me choose my career in Automotive field, even got lucky enough to try few of their legendary models.
This video literally gave me punch on my memory lane, what a brand it was, the one which shaped my career ❤

Wow sir, thank you so much for bringing this episode. I was, once, looking for a used montero, but was discouraged so much by all regarding maintainence, service, spares, that i dropped the idea. But then, somewhere deep inside, I still wish to have one. Also, being a resident of baroda gujarat, seeing that GJ 6 Montero, made me happy. Its sad that such good products had to leave India.
Oh, but we did own a pajero sfx 2012 model for good 5 years until we had to let it go and those 5 years were just awesome.

I've owned my 2002 3.5L NM Gen 3 Pajero (Australian Market) for 6 years now. Absolutely love the car. The seats in the Gen 3 fold flat like in the Gen 4, I personally think the styling inside & out is nicer and the car is just over all amazing. It is a shame Mitsubishi stopped making them all together and replaced them with the Pajero Sport/Challenger. The Gen 3 and 4 are very similar vehicles especially inside, fold down 3rd row seats, fold flat bed, tool kit in the NM, not in the NP I believe, full independent suspension and again just an over all amazing vehicle.

Mitsubishi Pajero was a legend. In the late 1980’s and all through the 1990’s, upto the early 2000’s, every single one of the Big Bosses, the General Managers and Country Heads of ALL the big Japanese Trading Houses, Industries and Banks and Engineering firms, all of which had offices in India in Madras, Bombay and Delhi, used to use only Mitsubishi Pajero GLX Intercooler Turbo Vehicles. They had fleets of these. I remember them very clearly. Mitsubishi Corporation, Bank of Tokyo - Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Marubeni, Sumitomo, Panasonic and everyone else who had offices here in India, used these brilliant vehicles.
So Sirish, they were certainly NOT Grey Market Imports as you said.

My family had owned two Pajeros (Montero) in the UAE, first in 2009 and then in 2016 and used the second one until this year March. Both were sold at around 250,000 KM and 200,000 KM respectively. I always enjoyed the revs of that 3.8L V6 in the 2016 model (pretty sure my dad did too xD) but it’s biggest cons were the wind noise in freeways at 120-140 Kmph speeds (cannot hear first row guys in the second row), having the fuel economy worse than a Land Cruiser (around 5 Kmpl), the plastics like you showed in the AC vents cracking and horrible resale value (2016 model did better in our case). In some instances I do miss the practicality and manoeuvring (in tight parking situations) of the Pajero over the LandCruiser 300. Also the credit card holder served a purpose of holding the Vehicle’s license card for us. :)
Edit: Great video as always Sirish. 🫡
