      Wow that is crazy. Yeah I think the aim was to show that 100yrs in the future genders were comfortable being treated as equals. Low and hehold everyone aged 30 to 40 in the credits had their own children who shortly showed them that anything male and naked was rape culture, and any female/female was conformative. Dina Meyer, dang one of the last tough & hot girls in film who still like men. Major crush of mine when I still lifted heh

    This movie is so underrated. When it came out everyone just cared about Titanic, and they couldn't understand that the movie was supposed to be campy, and not completely serious.
    The special effects alone were amazing, but again no one seemed to care because they were all talking about Titanic, which built a boat and sank it... not nearly as impressive.

    • @CapedInformer

      Cameron vs Verhoeven...

    • @Cosmo-Kramer
      @Cosmo-Kramer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's not true. Starship Troopers came out a month and half before Titanic, and almost every single movie does the large bulk of its business in the first month and half. Not only that, but Titanic was actually one of those rare exceptions and didn't come out like gangbusters. It debuted with a very modest haul (for such an expensive picture) of $28M. Where it made its money was from the long game--specifically, repeat viewings from teenaged girls (the Leo factor). And so week after week after week for many months, the film tacked on another $25M to its total gross. So no, Titanic had no effect on Starship Troopers, in terms of timing, nor in terms of demographics, as Starship Troopers was a film for 18--35 year old males...the same group that eschewed (to put it politely) Leo and Titanic.

    My favorite Verhoeven movie.
    Fascism is what he is satirizing in this one. Usually that's pretty clear when Carl shows up in the 3rd act dressed as a SS officer.
    If you missed it in the propaganda, settlers went into bug territory, which is why they were slaughtered. The asteroid is bug retaliation for colonization, and in response, the humans seek to exterminate the entire bug civilization. This one is not even trying to be subtle.

    • @yodieyuh
      @yodieyuh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Putting a person in a costume isn't itself satire. In the film the society presented to us works and the only crisis is one that comes from outside of society.
      There are two fascistic elements displayed: government/military service to be a citizen/vote and needing a license to have kids (non citizens can get the license). These factors are never shown to decrease the quality of living.
      He may have meant to satirize Fascism, but instead he showed a working society that seems better off than Western countries today.
      Targeting a species for extermination isn't something that defines Fascism. Communist China sought to exterminate four species of animal in the late 50's.

      My comment is about whether the film is a successful satire, not about whether Fascism is good or not.
      My conclusion being, Vorhoeven meant to satirize Fascism but did a poor job because he shows us a society that is working better than current Western society.
      No sexism. No racism. No environmental crises. No wars over human borders or resources. No poverty.
      That stuff may exist, we don't know because the film doesn't show it.

      "Fascism is what he is satirizing in this one ?"
      - But in a satire you have to give the counterpoint. In "Robocop", Murphy is the counterpoint. He wins against the system. Here : nope. Everybody acts like a good little soldier. The guy with the SS uniform stays the "good guy" . Verhoeven just forgets to give us a story.

    If you liked the movie, you should also checkout Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles. It was a CGI based animated series from around 1999/2000 and from memory shows Rasczak's Roughnecks platoon Pre- Klendathu as most of the characters are alive lol. Also its a bit more like the book as they have special suits. Plus you get to see different bugs on different planets

    I saw this two or three times at the theater when it came out. For 1997, the bug CGI was incredible. I believe the original novel is a bit different in that Heinlein did not intend the themes to be satirical. The novel was "a controversial work and his personal riposte to leftists calling for President Dwight D. Eisenhower to stop nuclear testing in 1958." Heinlein believed in many of the themes of the book: earned citizenship and earned suffrage, military service, strong government, etc.

    The bugs arent monsters. They were minding their own business until they were attacked.

    • @carllewis3861

      The bugs weren't attacked, the film shows the scenes out of order, the first event was the colonists settling on the bug planet and being slaughtered, then they attack earth and the failed invasion of clandathu.

    I love this film. The way it slowly becomes apparent that the humans are basically mugging the aliens, and that the aliens are on their way towards being just another species subjugated by human colonial aggressiveness. I think by the end it's even hinted that humans started the war in the first place XD

      That's the message of the movies, a kind of colonial aggression allegory while the book was more like holy shit, either we kill them or they kill us kind of thing.

    The book by Robert Heinlein is better proving Democracies are flawed because you don't always get want you want by voting for it! ( No I'm not defending Fascism, just Pointing out a reality.) I Love Dina Meyer in this movie and Basil Poledouris is one of my favorite movie composers! Conan the Barbarian, Red Dawn, RoboCop, The Hunt for Red October plus many more!
