Haha I love the juxtaposition of the extremes of those two worlds. The "near" and the "far future". Yes the latter are a bunch of dopes that can't handle anything but on the other hand you've got the rotten brutal hardcore capitalist society that doesn't care about human life at all. So macabre.

Yeah but there is no way society would change that much in such a short space of time like it shows in the movie, it would take at least 100 years for that kind of change.
Also, things are not really that different now compared to 85 apart from we are more advanced, there's more political correctness and we tend to be a lot more critical and paranoid of things going on around the world than what it was like in 1985.
Still I've got to wonder how a government would be able to pass a law to ban sex, kissing and things like that lol.

The few people who did own them could maybe play Solitaire on them. Microsoft was invented in 1985. You could smoke on airplanes. No one even knew the phrase "politically correct." It was like another world.

I was 3 years old in 1985. I grew up in a society that didn't have cell phones or the internet at the time. There was no PC culture, no social media, no selfies, and nobody got easily upset by what the other person said. Wesley Snipes accurately predicted the future when he said that today's society has turned into a "pussy-whipped, brady bunch version of itself".
I'm 45 and society has changed that much in 20 years.
We are very close to becoming this joke of a culture

@@Bancheis We can hope not. If we just care enough to do two things: vote out All of the politicians in office in a clean sweep, and then restructure the educational system, we could turn everything around.
By ridding ourselves of the two parties and making the Educational College at universities more like other high level professional programs (medicine, law, business, engineering, etc.) in the selective acceptance rates and difficulty of the curriculum, the problems would be solved.
Think of this: I've heard Researchers speak on the education topic for a while and this one guy looked at the difference between the US and Finland (or maybe it was Sweden) when the Scandinavian schools ranked at the top of the Best in the World lists, and found that they weren't better. They just didn't have the high number of bad teachers because of the way our teachers unions work. The guy said if we fired the bottom 10-15%, we could be #1 again. But, that was some time ago and at that time, I thought it should be the bottom 25% should go. I wonder what the minimum would be now?

Most people misunderstand this film. It's a fun action film but with a clever satirical edge that elevates it beyond what it would have otherwise been.
How is it satirical?

Not so much fun laughing at what seemed like a satirical dystopia back in the day - when you're living in the REAL dystopia that's far too close to this movie to be comfortable.

Agree. Although a lot of Hollywood controllers have a hand in the cultural direction that society takes. I wouldn't say it's all accidental.
We have nazis marching in cities across the country, joe Rogan can literally say anything he wants without fear, gun violence is at an all time high, and about 1/3 of the country lives in poverty. If anything we are the beginning of the movie, not the future part.

This film was supposed to be a good but forgettable 90s action flick. But because of the times in which we live, Demolition Man is a classic that will live forever. 😎

The Northridge Quake was a pretty big one in '94. Levelled so much of California, it caused 44 billion dollars in damage. In 1994, that was roughly what 79.2 billion dollars would be today. I woke up in the middle of that, and a bunch of stuff in our second story apartment at the time was destroyed. It was frightening. Never want to go through one of those again.

This was a fun action movie, with elements of Sci-fi and Satire! I'm glad you enjoyed it very much.
Satire? Sci-fi action with satire that turns out to not be satire, but a true thing that's happening right now.
2:39, in the trailer to the movie, Snipes says to Stallone, "If I told you where the hostages were, you're gonna have to come over here, reach into my chest and pull out my heart."
Stallone says, "Yeah maybe later."
We're not far from being like the world of 2032 currently.
That's the destination we are headed, most of the things they outlawed were male dominated things, removing masculinity from a society results in this film.
This is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. I just love the unique comedic elements and action. No matter how many times I see this movie it never gets old.
Early 90s action movies like Demolition Man, Terminator 2, & Predator 2 seem to really expect violence to escalate near the end of that decade. Phoenix & Cocteau definitely represent the opposite extremes of this film's 20th & 21st centuries respectively, while Spartan & Huxley are the ones who're willing to compromise in the middle. This is one of Stallone's two box office hits in '93, the other being Cliffhanger. Also, the guy who shoots Cocteau is Jesse Ventura.
...and Jesse Ventura ended up becoming a Governor, of Minnesota. Strange they also mention Arnie's political future in this.
Dont forget to throw robocop in there too!

I mean, thinking about how Stallone's character used the swearing tickets as paper, there's still the flush function. So, the shells must use the usual Wash, Rinse, Dry cycle. Shell 1, warm water power wash. Shell 2, nice rinse. Shell 3, warm dryer.
@@LA_HA well think of it this way, you need something to scrape the back area clean, can you think of any shaped sea shell you wanna rub in that area or scrape against your backdoor? Or in ladies case there front door?

Are they fake shells made out of something that's antiseptic? haha. I'm only asking since you seem to have read about it and maybe you remember the details
@@LA_HA naw didn't read anything just using my imagination, personally I would think they have some self cleaning method where you drop the shells in after each use and they come out clean. But seeing as he says there sitting on a shell I'm honestly not sure. Lol I just hope its Empty shells and there isn't something living in them that cleans you back there by eating the mess left behind like a sucker shell or something, you attach it like a leach and when it can't find any remaining food it lets go. Kind of like an Alge eater in a fish tank.

The foreshadowing 'I'd lose my head if it wasn't attached'. This film is so quotable as well.

Did you also notice in the museum that John Spartan used the water to harm Simon Pheonix like he did in the end?
Also, do you notice that the society is rebelling a lot against the system? The naked girl in his videophone is one example. Huxley herself collecting posters and merchandise that would have been outlawed is another. Even Bobby the assistant, he didn't care if he was building or destroying the system, he was just there to protect himself and be next to the leader of the city.
It's these little things that make you realize that the world was already starting to tilt against the system, it just needed a good push.
21:34 is Dennis Leary. Famous 90s comedian. Checkout his stand-up. He also had a song on the top 40 list named "I'm an A**hole"
I've been lucky to know the dominant screenwriter on this movie, Daniel Waters, for years. He's an extremely funny writer and observer in general. His most famous screenplay is his first produced, HEATHERS, which starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. His other writing credits include BATMAN RETURNS, ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, HUDSON HAWK, and most recently VAMPIRE ACADEMY, which his brother Mark directed. Mark Waters on his own directed MEAN GIRLS and the FREAKY FRIDAY remake with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. All these would make great reaction vids for you.

When this first came out, the future society it portrayed seemed like a fun but unrealistic extrapolation of the PC trends that were only just starting to be felt. Today it seems almost prophetic!
If you haven't already, you should watch Serenity in the light of what we're seeing today. Despite being by Joss Whedon, that also has some disturbing parallels with current trends.
We're closer to the future year than when this movie came out....

My friends and I had what we called “The Demolition Man Prophecies” This movie predicted more than a few things.
One of my favorite films of the 90's. Sly was a great hero as always. Sipes was a fantastic villain and Sandra Bullock was amazing
I loved hearing your take on the deeper meaning, and agree. It is a more mass consumable version of the concept behind The Invention Of Lying. If society doesn't have those with a touch of the bad in them, the first person who comes along with a bit of it can take over the world.
This film was prophetic.
I recommend "Judge Dredd" ( the Sylvester Stallone-version from 1995 )!

There was a period when Stallone and Schwarzenegger would mention each other in their movies in increasingly ridiculous backhanded complements. Hence the "President Schwarzenegger " line.
Yeah, like how in The Last Action Hero, you see a stand of Stallone in T2.
Great and funny movie - unfortunately, many scenes were cut out in the editing process. Originally, they also had to fight Phoenix' goons (Jesse Ventura, for example).
Oh...Pancho Villa was one of the most prominent generals in the Mexican Revolution.
I don’t know if anyone caught it yet. But, the sex scene between Sly and Sandra can partly be representation of porn, OnlyFans, and other “virtual reality” based sexual activities.
People are destroying themselves by participating in those things and it takes away from the natural way it was designed.

You’re finally watching a movie I’ve seen again! Oddly enough, this movie is actually more relevant today than it was then. Cancel Culture being a thing, and people wanting a strict adherence to this “purity” culture while demonizing anyone who dares to not want to live that way, it’s kind of ahead of its time.
It's because what is happening now is nothing new and has already happened before. It's called Socialism (amongst other things). Although, the Socialist-controlled media and Education authorities don't teach the public about how it is brought about by these very insidious and censorious tactics we are witnessing today. History is simply repeating itself. The writers in the 90s simply knew their own history, including the fact that it always repeats, so they could easily predict the future.
After the mass rise of world Socialist first world nations. There will be the inevitable resistance and fight against this form of Tyranny ... which will retrospectively be known as their World War Three, once millions, perhaps billions have died to Socialism and ultimately defeated it yet again. This cycle will then reoccur repeatedly, indefinitely.

This might sound dumb, but when I was a kid and I first watched this movie I thought that the three seashells were not seashells but instead they were three buttons in the shape of seashells. Then you press it and each seashell shoots different pressure waters from the toilet into your bowels cleaning you; sort of bidet system if you will.
When she said, "You don't have to make a dehurtful retraction" it really reminded me of when people today say "unalive."
At the Planet Hollywood in Dallas back in the nineties when you walked in the door the Frozen Naked Stallone in the pod prop was hanging right above your head really cool , the 80s and 90s were so much fun , thanks for sharing your great reaction!

Yeah Simon Phoenix is just happy being an asshole. I'm reminded of the Joker's line when talking to Harvey in the hospital, when he says "I'm like a dog chasing cars; I wouldn't know what to do with one when I finally caught it; you know....I just....DO THINGS."

This was such a good movie from Sylvester Stallone, Sandra Bullock and Wesley Snipes. I saw this in the movies when I was only 16 years old and this movie was first released in the fall of 1993. I use to love watching this movie Demolition Man. To this day this is still a good movie and I still like watching this movie for real. This movie was first released 27 years and 8 months and 3 days ago.

The October revolution in which the communists took over the Russian empire was in 1917.
36 years later was 1953, the year Stalin died.
In between, millions of deaths and the establishment of a police state which in some ways still exists.
The good doctor also played Humphrey in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. Come to think of, those two characters are oddly similar.
Schwarzenegger always said he had political ambitions and wanted to become president of the U.S.A. waaay before he became governor. Since Stallone and Schwarzenegger were movie rivals during this time period of their lives, Sly was basically poking a little fun of Arnold's dreams.
Demolition Man is the only satire that I know that is becoming reality in front of our eyes with open arms and warm kisses by an over-represented small portion of society.
The politics in this movie are brilliant , put to a masterful 90s action movie , perfection
