*_Fun fact: Once you master the fundamentals of drawing the human body, it's okay to go crazy with it._* *_Unless you're drawing actually humans with fixed accuracy._*
Same rule with cartoons. Do whatever you want with cartoons, but realism can't be changed; what you draw it with can but not what it looks like as a whole. This is the main reason cartoonists don't jump to drawing cartoons, they draw realism until they're good at it, cuz all cartoons are an exaggerated form of realism
My personal method for getting arms to not be too long or too short... Hold on to your butts. The arms should be long enough to grab their own butt, but not so long that they need raise their hands up to their butt. This roughly corelates to the 1/3 down the thigh, but also has the humorous image of whatever character being drawn grabbing their butt.
Been watching a few of your videos and gotta say I love them! They motivated me to start drawing again And I also love how while your advice is "Don't draw this or that" you also explain WHY and what to do instead/how to make it better Oftentimes lecture videos like these are only "Don't do this, that's bad" but don't offer a proper/correct alternative and reasoning as to WHY I really enjoy these videos and I'll surely stick around for more!
Thank you so much for this i couldve never learn to actually do this instead of always drawing the arms wrong and wondering what im doing wrong this is so underrated
HOLY MOLY I am speechless- okay shortened story. I am not really good at drawing humans in general so you just basically saved me on drawing literal people
OMG I Cant believe I JUST encountered this video, During the Gesture and Structure part, I had the problem you were talking about, being suuper stiff. After listening for a while, replaying the part, I began to do another full body with it in mind and its so much better than it usually would be! Tysm for being on youtube and helping those who stuggle with art like myself!
Omg I've been struggling with figure drawing for the past month and you literally explained in clear details all the issues and their solutions to the problems I was having. SERIOUSLY THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Great tips! Knowing where the hands stop regarding length of the arm, and knowing that the shoulder and forearm portion are the same length is game changing!
the video is so helpful !! ive been trying to look at references but they never mentioned the length and the mistakes ive been doing, this is only the second video ive watched from this channel and im already subscribed, keep up the good work!
I stumbled across this channel via the Don't draw wings like this video, and have just been looking through all the DON'T how to videos since. I've subbed to a few art tutorial channels for a singular video of theirs before, but never has a channel been so consistently helpful as yours. Every video I learn something new, and the way you explain things is very clear, which helps as I have an annoyingly difficult learning style. I'm so glad to have found this channel!
I never realized the foot and forearm length thing. I did start to get a feel for both part of the arm being about the same. Nice to have that confirmed.
This channel is crazy it’s very useful and I can’t describe it it’s awesome learn all this for free thanks Also could you do a how to cartooning stream? And how to make mermaids Graceful to take my opinion Thank you
I love these videos because they fill in the gaps and also makes me feel good about what I do know. Like, the proportion of like the arms was hard wired in me because I noticed it on me and similar for hand size but I've never noticed the foot thing! Also, thank you so much, I finally have an actual, y'know, understanding of why exactly the line of action is a thing. I'm gonna try and implement these things as best I can 😊
I've been getting back into drawing and poses have really been frustrating me. I think seeing things laid out in concrete terms like your arm demonstration is really going to help.
Even as an experienced artist this helps quite a lot! Thank you and keep it up! I'll be sure to get you some money your way so you can continue with this amazing project! 🧡
Thank you for this information. That´s what I need to see the thruth about drawing more expressive pose or draw new and different pose with some stikcs and circles 🤣. Thanks again, you got a new subscriber.
A thing that I struggle with the most as an artis trying to make my early sketches perfect. Take drawing a simple face I try to draw realistically But I end up erasing and erasing . It's honestly so hard in artists especially when you want it to be your career Feels like everything and every little sketch I make needs to be perfect. If anyone has tips on how to make art fun again and try not to see it as just something to be good at And to flex another people. That would be great So any tips please give them whether it be for mental health or art. Also I love your videos so much they make me want to start drawing again.
I really appreciate this video because my animations are mainly cartoonist, but it's supposed to represent human anatomy, so kids understand it, and this really helps a lot, a lot a lot
I like to draw dynamic comic book figures, and quickly learned that wooden dolls are far too stiff and limited for the kinds of poses I wanted (not to mention their proportions are too "realistic" and lack the more stylistically exaggerated proportions I prefer to work with), so instead of wasting money on those, I got some lightweight modeling putty, heavy duty wire and made my own dynamic, highly poseable figures for drawing. Pro tip for anyone wanting to do that, avoid making figures with large, rigid structures - build them with as many separations and rotational points as you can without losing structural integrity. For example, the torso of a wood doll is just one semi-rectangular chunk of wood, but the torso of my putty figure has five separate segments that have slight gaps in between to more accurately reflect how the spine, chest and abdomen areas stretch and compress with each other. I'd also suggest placing the wire where in the figure where the actual spine would be in order for the figure to bend, curl and rotate around that anatomical structure more realistically.
I have an idea, I am going to create a canvas of only arms, another one with feet, legs, heads, torsos, hands, etc. And every time I have to make a pose, I am going to open each of those as layers and select and move around the one I want and put them all together like a puzzle and create the perfect pose xD

Is there a specific website that people can recommend with great reference images? I imagine an artificial neural network A.I. would be great for this, since it could draw quick references in any pose you want very quickly and even make 3D references. Alright, A.I. researchers, please get on that.

that little bit about the arm being a pinwheel was something hella solid that really helped. i struggle with that a lot

The portions and rotation of the arms make it so much easier to think about in a thought process of tweening! I never thought of that some how!
My forearms are actually longer than my feet, I really have monkey arms 😂
Same.I also have tiny feet too
I always use the hand to head trick and the foot to forearm trick! It’s helped me quite a lot
this was super helpful and it was calming to listen to ♥️

I already knew my hand was relatively small. There's about an inch of room left for my hand to cover my head. My hands are tiny
Ayoooo, I always thought my hands were weirdly a little small 😐
Also quick question, what if your arms are supposed to match and animals then what?
HOLY SMOKES BLESS YOU
My hand covers my face. But it isn't as long as my head is tall 😅
My hand from wrist to the tips of my fingers is about 6 and 1/2 inches.
*POV:* You measured your foot by your forearm and your foot is only half the length of it. The struggles of small feet
11 year old me with small hands: well now what-
My... my foot is as long as my head is tall. Very interesting.
“If you’re over 11 your hand should cover your entire face”
Me @ 22: *hand short by a couple of inches* hmm… this seems kinda strange
Thankies from mcspankies
“That’s how big your hand should be” well then, I have very small hands-
I just realized my arms finger tips almost goes to my knees 😭

I have eds (elhers danlos syndrome) and that makes my limbs very long, especially my arms, my arms almost touch my knees when i stand

… hand size=face.
Yeahhh no i can fit an entire extra thumb length before it fits my whole face. But i have tiny hands… and a big forehead. Unless you mean hand covers the face as in chin-eyebrow.
i only really know how to draw theropods good witch is unfortuinate because i prefer to draw four legged creatures
but- but my hands only go up to my mid-forehead. I have small hands 😭"
Artist: yeah i get it! I’ve figured out how to draw the arm proportionally to the rest of the body so it looks natural in poses!
Foreshortening: *i’m bout to end this mans whole career*
I am not a good reference for this because my hand is oddly portioned I have a small Palm but long fingers
My hand cannot fit my entire face.
My foot is larger than my head.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
My hands reach my knees well my fingers
My Hand doesn't reach the top of my face :/
