i learned how to draw more fluid poses this way: i took a break from art for a while, only drawing what was simple, mainly doodling in class. i would draw stick figures, except with bare minimum anatomy; rectangles for arms and legs. if i were to bend the limbs, i would just curve them(kind of like how lavendertowne does it). as i began to enjoy art again, i applied this "curvy" nature to some more realistic anatomy. although less realistic, it appeared much more fluid! if you were to do this, i would suggest drawing a curved line first, then trying to draw your figure on top of that, following the line; maybe try doodling cartoonish, squiggly anatomy first to get the hang of it. quick gesture studies can help a lot too!
Thanks for that advice! Looking back at my drawings, I realized that the only parts where I let the limbs bend and curve a little were at the actual joints. I really like lavendertowne’s art too btw!
I begged my mom to buy me one of those tiny pose mannequins when I was a kid, just because I thought it looked funny. Years later I’m doing art and I have never once even thought about using it, I love him and his name is Jimmy but he’s just completely useless.
bro my mannequin is named jimmy too (little jimmy actually), although he isn’t a wooden mannequin and is actually like a posable action figure. I never use him because even his range is still limited lmao.
You literally just told me why I can't draw these really cool poses. I don't think about anything in-between them. Just the action itself. This is genuinely going to help. Thanks!
@@Thatmagic587 maybe this video was premiered or livestreamed and they somehow commented during that and the video didn't register as being out at that time..? Idk
I really like your note about anticipation and follow through. From reading a lot of manga I've noticed that even really wonky poses can be completely fine as long as there is a good anticipation before it. The right context makes the pose.
I think the biggest thing holding me back in drawing is my low attention span I struggle a lot with taking my time in drawing because I get bored or impatient really fast and can almost never focus.
As somebody who's really interested in drawing poses that contain alot of movement, as well as things like animation and comics, this is super helpful and I already feel like I'll be able to execute my ideas much better!! Thank you for making cool videos with good advice that really does help!
Not to be an art professor at heart but my biggest tip for it is, honestly, do a hell of a lot of gesture drawing. Look at real life people and use pen/marker so it's permanent and can keep you from overthinking
A thing that helps allot For begginers You have to keep in mind that you're going to curve the shapes with the line of action Not rotate it You're welcome everybody
i find it funny how i managed to draw such cool poses before bc i was lazy to sketch before i learned anatomy, i wasn't exactly the best artist, but i was excellent at copying i would see many artists and analyze the hands, the body and all that and i would implement that into my artstyle i was, essentially, *learning in reverse*
This is how I'm feeling right now, going through all my old art like, wow it looked so much more alive, now I have improved art skills but everything is stiff 😩
I think the key to finding the line of action for every dynamic or exagerated pose is practicing. Like, drawing lots of curves, imagining what would their body and action be, and then create some poses for that one curve. I mean, if you draw a curve, use that same curve for one or two or three different poses, and do this with more curves. That would be the way to get better at body language for dynamism... I think.
these videos are so well made for my poor adhd brain that wants things explained quickly but in depth, ive been looking for something like this for AAGES, THANK YOUUUU AHHH
I've been a full time artist for years now, but every once in a while I'll watch art lessons like yours. You're the most engaging and helpful one I've found yet! I wish I had tips like this when I was just starting out, but even now your tips are relevant and helpful to me! I've gotten good ideas for pieces, and kicked myself out of artist's block thanks to your channel, so thank you
ive been losing motivation on art but watching your vids make stuff so much easier to understand! now i have motivation to start practicing on my weak spots in drawing.. thank you! :3
Thanks for teaching me this, for the longest time I felt like my art has stopped progressing, so all your videos have been very helpful. Thanks again, and you have a very beautiful and adorable laugh ngl. ;)
I have been making art for 20+ years and starting to get back into making a comic I was working on as a teenager has made me realize my dynamism in my posing isn't strong. This is an excellent guide back through my fundamentals. Something interesting to me is that this approach to art is very similar to learning an instrument like guitar. You want to learn your box shapes and your theory so you can memorize note placement, but you'll rarely find the fluency you desire if you don't let yourself explore out of those boundaries whilst still keeping them in mind.
This is the first drawing tutorial I've watched, even though I've been drawing for over 5 years. Yes, I learned anatomy without any, and it took MUCH LONGER THAN IF I HAD WATCHED TUTORIALS I have a lot of anxiety watching tutorials, I don't know why, they remind me of classes at school, maybe that's why? Idk ksoapqeopaka But your tutorial brought me more comfort the moment I opened the video, so thanks :')
Honestly I feel like stickman (the alan Becker kind not those weird ones with thin lines and faces) are the best for basic pose concepts because it is so simple and it gets the point of the pose across very well
it’s so insane that your content is completely free, what you’re doing is amazingly helpful :D I wish i had this channel awhile back haha, keep up the great work!!
The main problem I have when drawing something dinamic is that I`m thinking about the shapes and anatomy. Though my art style is more like a cartoon one, I still think about everyting following anatomy because if it isn`t, the art will look really weird and wrong. Thanks to you and to this video (especially the part starting from 7:34 ), I`ll try it to look more simple so it will be easier to follow the motion line. (I overthink every time I draw and usually get no joy from what I`m doing and that`s a problem. Big problem ''': ) )
I HAVE FINALLY FOUND AN ART GUIDE THAT NOT ONLY HELPFUL BUT ALSO VERY FUNNY AND INTERESTING THAN THE OTHER VIDEOS IVE WATCHED AND THERE VIDEO WAS BORING URS ARE INTERESTING AND HELPFUL THANK YOU FOR THIS GIRL 💗💗💗
I'm an artist who draws animals way more often than people, and man I love line of action in animals! Especially with the tails of reptiles... you can do so much with it! In fact, I learned line of action drawing very early on because of my interest in drawing animals and plants over people. I rarely sketched anything back then because I simply didn't need to. But now that I'm trying to learn humanoid figures, I have to sketch SO MUCH. Although one thing I've noticed is that, when I sketch a humanoid figure, I still don't rely heavily on shapes apart from the joints. I use circles to mark the head, joints, and hips, but everything else I connect with simple lines. Like markers for proportion and line of action. One thing I still need to get the hang of is perspective shortening on figures though. That's always been a struggle of mine with or without shape sketching.
Personally I find drawing dynamic easier than drawing static. Static just feels so rigid and lifeless compared to how free and expressive dynamic is. Maybe it’s just based on how I draw but it just feels better for me.
You're right, what. I practice drawing from a dynamic reference with shapes technique yesterday but it's just. Really hard something is not right. And i'm glad i'm here. B)
Honestly i only use the pose maneqquin things to plan what the pose is going to be if Im drawing without reference, just like a quick base. I always switch it up a little to make it more fluid when I actually draw but it helps me to choose a pose without wasting my eraser lol
Every so often I draw the exaggerated pose and tone it down because it would be uncomfortable to do that pose in real life. I typically use unrealistic poses when I am trying to do wild takes and go super cartoony.
If you do it right, you can definitely draw the action Say it was an action comic with that punch A cool big frame could be the fighter not with his arm fully stiff but outstretched as it connects with the other characters face and the puncher’s other arm is somewhat swinging I think you could still convey movement if you do it right
I know each artist has different way to tackle stuff, but I would recommend trying using organic triangles when you start designing the gesture, it helped me a lot and everything well except for the head translate so well, easy to connect/build.
I've always had issues with stiff poses (or coming up blank on a pose in the first place) and now I know why :D (I haven't gotten to the Action Of Movement stage)
I use the forms and such, but I think I'd like to try making those shaps, but making a more flexible thing over it. Like making the rectangles for a arm, then drawing over it with more flexibility and such.
I didn't learn to use shapes to draw out parts until I was in my 20s out if curiosity. It just didn't make sense to me, especially the complicated head thing people do. I get why it's so weird to me now. I'm still technically using them, I just have the idea if them subconsciously memorized in a way? Watching these lessons has really helped me break down and truly understand how and why I'm drawing something the way I do and it's only made me a better artist I think. I'm new to digital art but I feel like I'm learning fast thanks in part to watching your lessons 💖
Okay but like my problem is, I don’t even know what pose to draw. Like how do you even decide? How do you even come up with a scene and poses and stuff? I’m not a creative person.
Normally I would do a natural pose, see where the pose can look dynamic and draw the pose. However I am only a cartoonist so I always exaggerate the pose but know the pose so it is not anatomically incorrect
