I did not expect for so much easily comprehensible info/tips to be packed into a 4 minute video. I saw an immediate improvement in the eyes I’m drawing after watching this. Thank you!!
Little note, Asymmetrical eyes are a thing so its fine to not draw the eyes that the same height. Be aware if your doing tho, personally i think eyes give a lot of character especially when not "perfect". nothing against the advice, but all blanket statements that include "Never" always have there exceptions. great vid tho
Little note, it’s believed that asymmetrical eyes are more common than symmetrical, although it’s not really a statistic due to the fact that it’s impossible to have a perfectly symmetrical face
@@EmK02 Most eyeballs are the same size though. So it's at least important to try and maintain iris height with respect to the face. Eyelid incongruencies can add some more realism though so I see what you mean.
I definitely need to redo how I'm going to learn art, now that I've switched from anime to slight realism. My art has been pretty inconsistent for a while, and I keep forgetting the fundamentals in making good art, so this was very helpful.
lmao i was sorta the same way, except i went from cartoony to semirealistic. quite the transition. my art was horrible for a while. my art is still horrible now, but not as horrible. i believe in you B]
Drawing isn't a homogenous "one size fits all" deal, each style and genre of drawing is practically its own discipline with its own set of rules and techniques. Anime, Western, Cartoon, Animation, Illustration, Portrait, etc. all have their own unique quirks, shortcuts, even languages to describe the different concepts and techniques within their own styles, and switching from one to another takes time to relearn and adapt to, somewhat like training for and playing a particular sport or musical instrument most of your life then learning a new one.
wow I've seen almost every single eye tutorial on the internet probably, and I've drawn a lot of eyes, but I still learnt from this. So well put and to the point. Don't click off, trust me.
one helpful way to get your eyes to look right from perspective: draw sideways triangles with a curved side line facing in the direction you want your eye to face, and then from there go and fill in the rest of the details. Eventually you can stop relying on that but knowing where the corners of the eyes are and where they "open up" will help a lot! On a face, they'll look vaguely like this: |> . > |
You talking about those tutorials that are like "DOn't do this thing that many people chose to do as a stylistic choice!" and aren't even that helpful in the end?
One thing that instantly fixed my 'other eye' problem on top of working on both eyes simultaneously was starting with the eye that would always end up bad, which was the left one for me. Never had that problem again
This is a great video!!! I'm just an old lady teaching myself to draw and paint and I definitely want to work on drawing eyes just because they are so fascinating and beautiful! This was such a great speed, very clear and descriptive without all the fluff :) Thanks so much!!!
I love how versatile your tutorials and tips are. They work on digital art, traditional art, realism, cartoonism, real species, fictional creatures etc.
Another small tip: When you look down, your eye lips never stay exactly the same, they droop as well. Just a fun realistic touch that I use, but *god* was this video helpful!
I usually don't like videos that tell you not to do something when it comes to art, but I have been doing digital art for 5 years and I haven't realized the thing about drawing the eyes at different heights, it makes so much sense! I've been doing that, and my drawings still look good, but I will definitely use this piece of advice for now. Thank you!
One thing that can cause the incorrect heights is just staring at the drawing for too long (along with other issues in a drawing, like skewing) So while sketching, you can: - Take a break for 15 or more minute and come back, look at other things, maybe do some eye strain reduction stuff while you're at it (like looking at something in the far distance for a few seconds or eye exercises), whatever it is just not staring at that drawing - Flip the canvas/sketch - Make sure to zoom out all the way - If applicable, ask a friend you trust to be honest if they notice anything off. Having something like that pointed out by someone else can make it suddenly obvious - Look up a reference if you didn't already have one, or even roughly re sketch whatever looks off I hope one or more of these tips helps!
@Vaughn Haney such great extra points!!! Especially the walking away for a bit! It sort of like when you say a word a bunch of times and suddenly that word sounds wrong and you're not sure if you're even saying it right...same with art...for me anyway. I have to step away, sometimes set it aside completely for a bit....eventually something clicks in my head and I can go back at it :) but, probably a dumb analogy 😊just what it always makes me think of :) Thanks for he great reminders!
Personally, i think its very important for the character if you want to keep the eye based on the person. For example i actually have football shaped eyes and i have specific glasses to shape them back to normal ^-^ love ur vids and this is just a thought ♥
Oh god... With the height of eye thing I actually used to make the eyes the same height and different width.... but upon seeing other people make theirs shorter I did the same.... I was right in the beginning.... no wonder the eyes always looked back from an angel-
In angles, I like drawing the shorter eye higher, than the longer one. I don't know why, but it just gives off a really interesting and cute effect that I love. It just works.
This is such a good video! I have a good amount of drawing experience, but it’s been a WHILE. I put this on thinking “it never hurts to revisit the fundamentals, especially when you’re getting back into the swing of things.” I’m glad I did, I’m going to remember “pirahna lips” forever!
I've recently been trying to get back into pixelart and suddenly stumbled across your channel. It covers alot of helpful topics, I just want to thank you for helping me get back into drawing.
Awesome video! I know how to art, but I do enjoy seeing other artists explain their craft and help people how to art as well and I loved your explanation of how to draw eyes
this was such a good video. it's easy to understand, simple, short, to the point, and the piranha plant thing was such a good example and helped me understand a lot. thank you!!!
There is nothing more relieving as an insecure artist than going in to someone’s work that I admire, and seeing that I ALREADY DO ALL OF THIS Satisfaction
Thank you! That's way more helpful than "use a ruler". I don't think those tutorials realize that relying on a ruler doesn't solve the actual problem, and will have you dependant on the ruler.
okay ngl the algorithm decided to bless me once again with. I just discovered you. And holy the advice was so easy to understand and very precise to the issues I had with eyes so far :o
I used to know all these and follow them, but I guess over time I got overly comfortable and Stopped thinking about it, just went with my instincts. It's good to have a reminder to actually pay attention
My eyes started vastly improving once I started drawing each at the same time, and putting even more attention to the lids and sphere shape. Realistic lashes are still so challenging for me.
This is the busiest four minute video I've ever watched. The information is good, especially the bit about skewed eyes, but there's a lot pulling at my attention.
Great video. The piranha lips will probably never leave my brain. But, I did want to say that the head, like anything else, can be mapped with parallel lines that recede to the same vanishing point. So technically the far eye is smaller in height! But this will probably only be noticeable if the camera is right up against the face your drawing, otherwise not changing the height is solid beginner-proof advice to get your "other eye" where it needs to be.
You helped me out sm! I fr didn’t think about how heights of the eyes won’t change because my brain cells refused to work together and now it’s super easy considering that lolol Love your vids, I’ve watched quite a few and they are all very easy to follow yet super helpful. And I haven’t found any tricks that I would disagree on Thank you👍
I absolutely love your videos and art tips. They really do help me a lot and I'm starting to compare my newer and older art pieces before and after videos and I'm seeing (positive) differences :D
About the “drawing the other eye thing”. Most of the time I draw only one eye where the character is facing and the mouth the opposite side. This is a style I developed because sometimes the character's bangs would cover the “other eye”. The only time I draw both eyes is front view.
Awesome video, thank you 🔥💕 I just realised that I've been doing many of these things over the years without really knowing why so it was easier to mess them up- but now I understand & can avoid mistakes or fix them more easily when I do make one 🥳
Also if you have trouble with eye placement, try tracing a line from the top of where your ear connects to your head to your eyes. They should be around there, unless you are an alien or animal. And from the bottom of your ear, to the area of your lips. I see a lot of pictures where the ears and facial features aren't alined correctly so I thought this might be helpful for someone scrolling through the comments.
Correct, in exception, I draw the eyes not in the same time, I draw one then the other one, after that I draw the pupils. But in case it works for me perfectly fine, because of my drawing style and my perfectionism. The first one with the little eye triggered me full hard, but good that you correct it. 😅 Some of your tipps and tricks are very cool and helpfull, but sometimes it is still the thing how peoples technique works. For myself like I said I draw the eyes not in the same time I draw them one after one finished nearly. 🤷 But still looks like he second picture from you, thanks to my good eye and hand controlling and coordination. 😁
