The thing about "ugly expressions" is that they're used to convey ugly emotions. Nobody is going to look at someone sobbing and crying and think "damn they're pretty"

Strangely enough, sometimes pushing a character's expressions to be 'ugly' can make them more attractive! I don't know if it's just me but emotive always looks better than stiff, it shows or at least underlines that they feel SoMeThInG.

I absolutely LOVE these tips. I am very fond of making 'kuudere'' type characters, who are *usually* very calm and composed, and show minimal, stiff emotion. Changing from the stiff, half-hearted emotion, to a full-blown raging expression, or agonized expression, it hits a lot harder

This was so helpful. I'm face blind and autistic, and my professor's approach was "just look at a mirror and draw it! Look at these photos of expressions, recreate them, and label them! Explain what in the expression makes them that emotion!"
... He didn't get that not only could I not understand expressions, but I couldn't even remember a face long enough to recreate it on the page how he wanted.
Your explanations like how the jaw scrunched up, or which wrinkles create which effect, or "this is anger, " was like the Aha moment I've been trying to have. Suddenly I knew where to start looking and how to faithfully recreate emotions in a face. 💜
Hi sorry for the random comment but FINALLY I’VE SEEN SOMEONE ELSE TALK ABOUT THIS, thank you qwq. I’m also autistic and faceblind and the moment they said “the eyebrow is the most delicate “ I had flashbacks to everytime I ended up drawing the eyebrows like they were randomly generated and I really appreciate seeing this comment because it’s so hard to find another artist who struggles with this qwq. A tip that I have in my experience is to think of everything purely proportionally. Don’t think about the shapes of the facial features” like this is what the eye looks like, the nose looks like etc “, just where the guide says to put them ( the more basic the shape the easier to work with in my experience, the more you get used to it the faster you can do it and the more complex you can make the basic shapes ) since I use the guidelines I don’t have to think about the specifics of the face if that makes sense? Like how the elbow will always go to the navel and the hand will be as big as the length of the face, faces themselves have that too! Since you said you were struggling with the overall picture I would recommend just thinking about the distance math on a purely mathematical level. I still struggle with the expressions somewhat but it really helps me place the base of the face ^^

Me too! This is helpful in more than just art. You know, that is the reason I was drawn to reading and drawing anime/cartoons in the first place. With cartoons, a good artist makes the expressions exaggerated and clear for everyone to easily understand what the character is feeling. It’s so much easier than real life! (Also perhaps because it’s still and doesn’t constantly move unlike real people lol)
You can likely develop an eye for this more than you might think. As in you build up intuition for how expressions read and what feels aesthetic to you and get pretty far with that

My BIGGEST tip that she didn't talk about in this video, is to go stand in the mirror before you draw a facial expression, and shift your face between neutral and the expression you want to draw a bunch of times taking VERY CAREFUL NOTE of everywhere your face shifts. Watch how the lines under your eyes move or how your jaw stretches or squashes. Take note of how much you can see of the teeth, gums, or tongue. Take note of how much space there is between your eyebrows and your eye, and the position of the pupil. Find the best angle to draw the face at to best accentuate the expression, etc. Take picture or video of it if you have to! Ive found that my expressions improve a TON after doing this because its the best kind of reference for drawing expressions. I promise you WILL learn something and it WILL be worth it to get up and walk over to your bathroom mirror.
Edit (to appease all of you in the replies who are clogging my notifs): I know she mentions it briefly at the end. But it wasnt highlighted very much and this tip has helped me so much that I wanted to make sure everyone got the chance to see it. And for all of you who have made it a game to try and find an excuse or an exception to this tip, haha very funny, but its getting kind of old. You can answer those questions for yourself as easily as I could and you know that already. I really wish I could join this art class, because this is the right class for me. My other one didn’t do that great for me, when I think about everything that teacher taught me, the only thing that I really think teacher taught me was to shade…that’s it. But your class looks like it will ACTUALLY teach me what I need to know, you can expect me in the future!😉
One of the reasons I loved Arcane was their use of wrinkles. People acted as if it was way more expressive than most animations but I don't think they did that much more than other shows when it came to their willingness to use a large library of facial expression, what what was really different about that aspect of the show was more about how they were willing to have the characters have face wrinkles without it meaning that they're old.
As someone who is autistic and has a very stiff face, especially eyebrows (basically, even furrowing my brow as much as possible makes them only a bit closer together with a few wrinkles between them, and my eyes are naturally half-lidded so it doesn't change them either), those tips are so useful because it's always alien to me how people can actually express emotions on their faces or can draw exaggerated expressions because for me, who's unable to do that, it's just so unrealistic. So thank you so much for the tips!

I'm autistic as well, my most used facial expressions look okay because I have learned how to push my face to where it's become a habit,
but whenever I'm genuinely saddened my eyebrows only go up a little bit and my eyes close a bit as well and it makes it look like I'm pissed off lol.
So whenever I'm sad in front of people I have to consciously flex my eyebrows up more to not make it look like I'm about to punch them haha.. The struggle is real :[

All these tutorials are super helpful! The more fun/ugly expressions are is definitely something important and should not be restrained. The anime Asobi Asobase is a good example of these ‘uglier’ expressions being used. (I think)

Yes! Not being afraid to make expressions ugly is such a good advice! On of the reasons characters in Arcane feel so alive is how RAW their expressions are. Animators weren't afraid to really push them, to give them wrinkles and puffiness that comes with crying, to smear spit and snot over their faces, to show them really open their mouth, show the teeth, contort their faces in anguish... And it's freaking beautiful.

this is a really good tutorial for newer and/or nervous artists, but I wish that she had covered more about the neck and shoulders. I honestly consider them essentially *part of the face* because of just how much they can change an expression (and also just because they're almost always in view- she even shows them in her examples, even if she doesn't change them).
It’s important to remember but not actually complicated
Honestly as someone who LOVES expressions and making my characters be all goofy and stupid, despite me not enjoying drawing noses since it kind of ruins the faces that I draw in my style? Adding wrinkles is DEFINITELY something I should keep doing more often. I LOVE wrinkles so much :) This video did motivate me to do a lil expression study for fun every once in a while to practice, so thanks for that!
This is why i love the way sechi draws, he always has like a couple frames in his animation, where you know exactly and i mean exactly what a character is feeling, he exaggerates and squeezes, tenses and relieves, and i just love sechi’s emotions, they’re basically perfect for his style!

The thing I love the most about these snippets of art classes is that the thumbnail actually shows you what the class will be about, even if you don't understand it.
I'm pretty new to the world of drawing, and even though I'm being a 3d modeler, learning this stuff is important.
One of my biggest takeaways from this is how easy it is to mess up an expression with the wrong placement of a line. But also, sometimes you want to mess it up.
Freaky Fred from Courage the Cowardly Dog comes to mind. Big up turned smile, showing tons of teeth, but the eyes and eyebrows? Those are put in such a way that makes it feel like the smile is a front like this person is unstable at some level, and that was the goal of the character's face to tell you that story even before you heard his voice, saw his story, or even heard about him.
Anything can tell a story, but if your parts of the story don't line up it'll take away from the emotion of the piece. Art , the face, the mood, all of these play a part in any story even if no lines of dialog are uddered.
0:35 I know this is kind of a nitpick, but in general, Soul Eater definitely doesn’t have stiff expressions

Honestly, once I was waiting for my brother to get glasses, there was a mirror in the lobby. I just stared at myself and made different expressions with my eyebrows and see how they can wrinkle and how far you can get it, sounds odd but it was literally so helpful.

I never struggled too much with expressions, but this is a very good reminder. One thing I always did (subconsciously) was to model the expression as I drew it. I would take on the hurt, elated, depressed, peeved expression of the character I was drawing. Needless to say I would get looks

I’ve done a realistic art class that I loved, but I kind of want to do this one. Digital art is something I put a lot of time into band these videos are pretty much a huge source of help for me.

Fr what happens to anime characters when they cry? 😨
Depends on the anime and on the character. If it's an anime with a very expressive and exaggerated (or very very realistic, one of the two) style, characters will cry in a very - I don't want to say ugly, just... visibly emotional - way, but in anime with a different style the characters will look different when they cry. Also, the character's personality matters, too: a loud and emotional character is more prone to being drawn as crying big and loud, but a quieter or more withdrawn character might not cry as obviously or as "ugly."
@10:50 shows what a good teacher you are, because you started to simply tell us something and then stopped and said ‘hold on I can show you’ and that is 1000x more helpful!!! Love these vids🤍

Depends on the art style, of course. Not everything is going to be applicable for what an artist's actual intention is. Yes, it's good to know these things, but whether or not you apply it to your own art is very subjective...especially if you are a hobby artist and not drawing to be a professional and make money.
Also, sorry about the nitpick, but all these click-bait videos being titled "DON'T DO THIS!!!!" really rubs me the wrong way. I'm sorry, but as my first paragraph points out, an individual's unique art style also determines what is or is not important, even if they know how to draw more varied things. IMO, in the land of "drawing just for fun", there is absolutely no right or wrong. This is how people become insecure, or others become elitist and judgmental. Live and let live. Someone drawing simple stuff because it's what they like to draw is not hurting anyone. Just do what's fun, while also being aware of tips and tricks like this. (And for example, I know how hands work, I just can never draw them to save my life, even if I try copying my own hand or a hand I see in a photo. My brain simply isn't wired to actually portray hands correctly on paper...sadly.)

I wish I discovered this 5 years ago, I finally started freeing up my expressions and making my characters looser and not being afraid of ruining the aesthetic to get the feeling into the drawing and it was like unlocking a new ability. Not only does pushing the expression make it more real an impactful, it actually made my aesthetics better since it brought the characters alive.

Insane video, I swear I tried to explain the eyebrows part to one of my exes and they refused to understand how important it is. Tried to draw sadness but it looked like the character was so neutral, even maybe haughty just because they refused to shift the eyebrows down because "that's now how it works irl"
