How to get your friend to quit SSBB in 4 easy steps:
1. Pick Meta Knight
2. Press the A and B buttons randomly until a stock is taken.
3. Look at your friend and say, "Come back when you can put up a fight."

Brawl came out in March 08. In February, there were some demos available at certain event venues. One video in the early years of TH-cam showed a guy win a match and confidently proclaim, "Metaknight: THE best character in the game". A whole month before the game came out. I never forgot that lol.
I will have to find that video at some point
Seeing Chu's Kirby Planking again gives me PTSD from the times I had to face him in bracket :(. And yeah, it's a shame the MK ban never held up. I was one of the URC members at the time, and the game definitely died quicker than it would have otherwise in the US from him staying legal :(. Great video as always Larry

Something to also note about Meta Knight in Smash Ultimate is that his tornado now has a wind box that is supposed to suck people into it. The problem with it is that when he's in the air while using the tornado, it ends up helping the opponent return to the stage instead of knocking them to the blast zone.
You can also use it to gimp people and pull them offstage during moves and such. It’s quite hard to do, but it’s really funny. The MK cord has deemed it the “poop chicken” from my memory
It really puts in perspective just how broken Meta Knight was when tripling the startup of his Up Air still results in a Frame 6 Up Air

I always wanted someone to do videos like these similar to PNDK&M videos on competitive history for Mortal Kombat but for Smash, so excited to see that you’re doing those!
Would've loved to see some acknowledgement or at least footage of Ito since he contributed significantly to laying out the groundwork for how MK should be played early on in Smash 4, but aside from that, amazing job on this! Your experience really shows with all of your explanations and I really appreciate that, especially with how easily misinfo was spread around with Ult MK.
I also definitely agree with you thinking the combos don't feel that much harder to perform in Ultimate. I think the main thing that turned a lot of people away at the start of the game was getting around short hop macro bs. I guess he'd just be better if he still had Mario uair like prepatch Smash 4, but I honestly think that without it, this is the funnest and most skill-expressive he's ever been. There are really easily applicable ways to better navigate the issues everyone had before with messing up full hops or getting stuck on platforms, but most of the playerbase just isn't willing to make those adjustments, and that might partially be my fault because I haven't dropped any in-depth resources about it and only have chances to explain it to people who sit down with me at events lmfao
There were a lot of players I was thinking of mentioning for the video(you included), but scrapped the idea because it was getting too long and I already explained everything I wanted to. I'm glad you liked the video though. Despite it being the smallest part of the video Ultimate was the one that I had the most trouble writing about lol

Meta Knight actually got another huge buff in patch 1.0.4 of SSB4: the nerfs to Launch Directional Influence (LSI).
In the initial release of Smash 3DS, the newly added LSI mechanic was much more powerful, as it affected moves between the launch angles of 65° and 115°, or between 245° and 295°, aka moves that launch vertically. Pre-nerf LSI rendered both vertical finishers and combo tools much weaker at launch, as opponents could LSI down the finishers to die much later and LSI up combo tools to launch them further to end the combo there. It gave the defender more options defensively against vertical combos and weakened latter combos, but it also limited the combo potential and kill power of the cast, which brings shades of stuff the playerbase heavily criticized about Brawl. Another important thing to note is that the 3DS versions of Battlefield and Final Destination have larger blastzones than the Wii U versions, further facilitating this.
Meta Knight was likely the biggest casualty of the pre-nerf mechanic: SSB4 MK lives and breathes by the latter combos, and LSI during that time pretty much crippled (or heavily limited) his vertical combo game he needs to succeed. This, combined with his weaker tools like the lower range on up air, pretty much meant that pre-1.0.4 Meta Knight simply had a miserable time in the game, and was likely a low tier character during that time in hindsight. He simply didn't fit that version of the game.
Patch 1.0.4 would fix this, and the Wii U version launched with the 3DS 1.0.4 balance changes, so he never had that problem in the Wii U version.

I think they should bring back gliding for Meta Knight, Pit, and Charizard. Steve got a glide with his up B, so it feels unfair that the OGs still don't have their glides anymore

I'm of the opinion he's a really high skill ceiling character in ultimate compared to smash 4, and people just haven't taken the time to perfect their gameplay with him. Not as many smash 4 players stuck with their old mains coming into ultimate, and all the new players who's first smash game is ultimate don't know all the old secrets about how to play meta knight exceptionally. That's kinda the fun thing about ultimate. There's always so much room for new players with dedication and passion to rise up with the characters they like.
In Ultimate I think Metaknight has a similar issue as a bunch of other underplayed mid tiers is that he is solid but ultimately redundant. With so many characters and so many matchups to prepare for there’s less incentive to squeeze every ounce out of a character’s unique kit. Instead, what you end up using are characters that do their particular thing(s) better than every other character does their particular thing(s). In that respect, Meta Knight just doesn’t have the “sauce” to stand out compared to anybody else, and his playerbase and meta development suffers as a result.
I think the fact that they have been trying so hard to undertune meta knight since brawl kinda proves that if you give good physics and frame data to character with 6 jumps they’ll be always be able to do something
Ult Meta Knight is one the many solid but overshadowed characters.
Kind of a shame he doesn't have many good players, but it's not surprising either due to how meh his win condition can be.
At least he has some cooler stuff people are figuring out like at the nutty ways you can interact with the ledge using Drill Rush.

Maybe one day he'll rise higher, he's got real Sleeper-Pick energy.
Man I remember Nairo's trip to Japan in Sm4sh and GFinals was him vs Abadango laddering eachother. Sakurai watching that finals releases the next patch where both characters got nerfed to be less effective at laddering.
Thia could turn out to be a really good series. Please consider doing this with other characters!

Once, just once, is it even possible to, just for the one time, force a Smash player to come up with a normal fucking name for something? This dumb shit is why I never bothered getting good at Smash, I hear of some random garbage called the Zorbo Magumbin and it's just a slightly more fancy way of doing the Mario up air chain in Sm4sh.
Braw metaknight was definitely busted, but imo I don't think banning him would've saved the community. The game still had a lot of degenerate characters.

I felt Meta Knight was in quite a good spot balance wise in Smash 4 but now in Ultimate he’s such trash.
